Copyright and conflict of interest

Hello, PELeonard.

The article Project Rebirth has been reverted to an older state after it was discovered that it had been edited to contain substantial content copied from official sources. Wikipedia is not able to incorporate content from other sources without verifiable license. Our content is released to the world to modify and reprint, even commercially, and all content we take from elsewhere must be compatible with this. I realize that you are an intern for Project Rebirth (or were), but even so we cannot copy content from your employer without that license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the process.

However, license is only part of the concern. I appreciate your transparency regarding your connection with this organization, but in addition to that transparency we ask that you read and follow the guidelines at Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest. The note placed on the article shows a fundamental misunderstanding of Wikipedia:

Wikipedia is intended to be a neutral compendium of what reliable sources say about notable subjects. Reliable sources are in almost all cases peer-reviewed publications that are not connected to the subject itself. We are not here as a business resource for the entities we discuss; articles are not controlled by those entities, and people connected with those entities have no particular authority over them. Copyright Issues

Hello Moonriddengirl!

My apologies for not writing sooner. I am an intern at Project Rebirth as stated on my user page. My job on Wikipedia for Project Rebirth is to update it and whatever else needs to be done that I can accomplish. And as you can see I am new at Wikipedia so what you've said is a BIG help. Thank you!

Now for the good stuff. I get the conflict of interest more now than before, but I'm still confused about the licensing. I understand that Wikipedia Admin need a license for the content of Project Rebirth, but how do put everything on the Rebirth page under that license? I read the pages in your message on all of that, but I'm still not sure about it all.

@Moonriddengirl: My copyright coverage is a little hazy so I've pinged an expert on the subject to double check my post here, but unless I am mistaken you need to fill out a ticket with the OTRS team to get your material on here without having it harassed by admins on site. Given the information you've added to your userpage, I would recommend taking a read through WP:OWN; unless I'm misreading the situation here, you seem to be teetering on the brittle edge of violating that policy as well. PELeonard, to help avoid the "OWN" issues Tom refers to, it might be helpful to update your user page to indicate that you understand and will comply with the COI guidelines. Organizations are welcome to work with the community in making sure content related to them is accurate and up-to-date, but we have historically had such a problem with people trying to use Wikipedia for promotion or to white-wash their reputations that the community has drawn some careful lines to clarify roles here. Many organizations assume that they have special rights to their articles because that's the way it works on most sites, but on Wikipedia it's kind of the opposite. :)

With respect to licensing your content, the easiest way to license your material is to put a notice on your website that says:

The text of this website [or page, if you are specifically releasing one section] is available for modification and reuse under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License and the GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).

This would license content on your website to be used and modified, even commercially, by anyone.

If you would prefer not to license the content on your website, you can and should go through our volunteer email response team (OTRS, by shorthand) to issue that license. See Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries for an example form and address. You still must release content to be modified and reused even commercially if you want it to be usable on Wikipedia, but you don't have to release your whole website.

After that, your best bet is to work with the community through the talk page of the article. Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide talks more about policies and how to do this - it's a very useful document, although dense reading for a newcomer. :) --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 12:29, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
