Managing a conflict of interest
editHello, PalomaCapTeas. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Capital Teas, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:
- avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
- instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
- when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. 331dot (talk) 13:28, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Please indicate that you have read the above; you should not directly edit the page if you are associated with this company, and if you are a paid representative, you are required by Wikipedia' Terms of Use to disclose such status. 331dot (talk) 13:54, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

editHello, I'm Kleuske. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Capital Teas have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. Kleuske (talk) 13:36, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia, as you did to Capital Teas. While objective prose about beliefs, organisations, people, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion. Thank you. 331dot (talk) 13:53, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

editHi, Kleuske. Thank you for contacting me. I've never edited a Wikipedia page, and I suppose I wasn't aware of all of the rules and regulations. I was not adding any promotional information. The location list that was listed was outdated. I only added the new store locations and removed the "coming soon" off of the stores that are actually open. I don't believe that's promotional, but rather factual. Now there is no location list at all. How can we edit the page to be accurate?
- Hello. I assume from your username that you represent Capital Teas. If you are an employee or otherwise a paid representative of the business, you are required by Wikipedia's Terms of Use to clearly state that; please review the paid editing poilcy if that is the case. Even if you are not paid, please review the conflict of interest policy as generally one should not directly edit in areas that they are associated with. Instead, please suggest proposed changes on the article talk page (in this case Talk:Capital Teas). That said, I'm not sure a list of the locations would be accepted, as the article is encyclopedic and not meant to be a page for the business to publicize its locations; please see this page for some advice on contributing on behalf of a business. If you have any other questions, please post them here. 331dot (talk) 14:19, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, you told me to post here to continue our conversation. I'm sorry if I do this wrong. I've never edited a Wikipedia page. I'm responsible for making this information accurate. I'd like to request the ability to edit the locations section and # of locations on the page. Those will all be facts and not promotional. I can write the location section like the Stumptown Coffee Roasters page (as an example), where I cite sources to store openings. Would that be acceptable? If not, what should I do?

- I've moved your post to this page; by "here" I meant this page that you are viewing now. I apologize for pressing this point but you do need to answer the question I posted above about your status(if you are a paid employee or not). I assume when you say you are "responsible for making this information accurate" that you represent the company, but Wikipedia needs to know how. I might suggest that you look at some other articles on businesses like Walmart or any business you wish; they don't typically list the locations of the business' stores. As you seem to represent the business, this seems to Wikipedia users to be done for promotional purposes(to publicize your locations so potential customers are aware) Usually the most that I see is that the number of locations is noted and where they are generally(like in what states or nations) but not where they are specifically.
- I would urge you to read this page on conflict of interest before further edits, as it will give you advice on how to proceed in editing the page about your business. Feel free to post any other questions on this page. Thanks 331dot (talk) 15:56, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

I am a paid employee for Capital Teas. Sorry, I thought I mentioned that already. We are not looking to advertise the business through the page, but simply to make the information on our page accurate. Would I be able to list the general locations and change the # of stores to the proper information? Thank you.
PalomaCapTeas (talk) 16:03, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
- From what I see in other articles on businesses, you could list where locations are generally; an example might be "Capital Teas has 10 locations in the Washington DC area" or "Capital Teas has locations in three states and Washington DC" (I don't know your actual number of locations, that's just an example). As the conflict of interest page suggests, you should post your suggested change on Talk:Capital Teas so others can put it into the article. You should avoid directly editing the article; this doesn't affect whether or not your changes will be accepted, but it does avoid conflict of interest issues.
- If you had a link to a page which states your number of locations and where they are generally, that would be helpful to support such a statement. I'm not sure I can do so today but if you post a proposal on Talk:Capital Teas I would be willing to look at it and perhaps add it if everything is OK with it. 331dot (talk) 16:11, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
