WWI Aviation

edit

Hi Panth - thanks for the note on my user page - very nice to meet you. As you've already seen, I have a particular interest in aviation in the WWI era & it looks like you do, too. Mostly I'm just doing small additions to existing articles on the aircraft and some of the aces, of all nationalities; there are quite a lot of crucial gaps on Wikipedia in this area, so its relatively easy to find ways to make additions and sometimes start new articles. I don't think that there are many people in Wikipedia particularly interested in the field, so its good to know you've joined the Military History Project. As you say, maybe we can develop some collaborative ideas. I have access to some reasonably good materials, so I hope to keep on adding - in a quiet sort of a way! Occasionally I've come across some material on aircraft in the German language; maybe I could ask you for help with translation at some point? Anyway - nice to hear from you & hopefully see you around sometime in the WWI articles. Scoop100 22:02, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Hello again Panth - Thanks, I have seen the Aerodrome site; its very good - do you know what the situation is regarding use of images from this site, so far as copyright is concerned? Is there anybody that I should check with about using images for WP articles? I have seen something somewhere suggesting that under German copyright law, a photograph is copyright for 50 years after the death of the person taking the picture. So I would interpret that as meaning that any photograph of a German (and maybe Austro-Hungarian?) WWI flyer or aircraft would now be out of copyright and therefore could be used in WP. Would you agree with that or any other comments would welcome. Thanks. Scoop100 20:56, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Panth - Thanks again for the information regarding copyright. I will contact 'The Aerodrome', as you suggest, re use of images for WP; just as an experiment, I'm going to try to to get permission to use a photo of Julius Arigi in the article I've started. I'll let you know what response I get from the site. Best regards. Scoop100 21:42, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi again Panth - good news! The following is the exchange of e-mails re use of images:

"Hi Could you tell me please what the copyright situation is regarding use of images on the Aerodrome? I have quite a lot to do with Wikipedia, in terms of creating and improving articles on WWI aviation, particularly Aces and aircraft. It would be great to be able to include some more images in the articles and obviously 'The Aerodrome' is a marvellous repository for these. My understanding re photos is that the copyright period finishes 70 years after the death of the photographer. Its fairly safe to say that this would apply to most WWI photos. But in any case, Wikipedia, as you may know, is a free to all resource, so there is no commerciality attached to any use. What would your position be, please regarding uploading images to WP, with assurance that in every case that the appropriate credit to the site would be given? Thanks Best Regards Simon Petitt"

"Hi Simon, Not a problem. Thanks for asking.

Scott Hamilton webmaster@theaerodrome.com"

So, we have the go-ahead. I think this will prove very helpful. I've sent an e-mail back to Scott to say thanks.

Best regards Simon. Scoop100 19:56, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Panth - very sorry for long delay in replying to your message. You obviously take your research very seriously & I think that's an excellent basis for contributing to WP. I've saved Udet to my 'Watch-List' & will watch out for your contributions. All the Osprey books are good. Recently I've been adding to my WWI library (which was really quite small); I hope to be reading and researching during the winter months and contribute a lot more to WP on WWI Aces, generally. I'm afraid I don't, at the moment, have any information on the Squadron you mention. I've had a look at what G VanWyngarten says on the Forum - he writes really well, both there and in his book; better actually, I think, than some of the Osprey series authors. Hope to see you around in WP. Scoop100 21:05, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi Panth - Happy Christmas to you too - I have to confess I've done nothing at all on the Aces for a long time, despite having all best intentions! All I seem to do is add to my WW1 Aviation collection of books; maybe in 2008 I'll do a bit better with contributing to WP on the basis of the information gathered. Hope you have a good Christmas; best wishes for the New Year. Scoop100 (talk) 21:47, 23 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
