Wine Poster

Hi , in your assessment of the Wine poster not being authentic, if you look on the bottom right hand of the poster it is stamped with the printer, Morgan Lithograph, just like the one you replaced. The company has been in existence since 1866. It didn't matter Myrtle Stedman's hairstyle(it is her on the cover and contrary to Clara's role Myrtle was the star) as I think the author , Wm. Mcharg, wrote this story before bobbs became a popular hairstyle. Doesn't matter, the poster is as authentic as the one you replaced, printed up by the same company. However the color poster, if it makes you happy, is at least better that that advertisement.Koplimek (talk) 02:44, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for input. My rationales:

• The Hairstyle of Stedman(?) is 1910s (Pickford) or 1940s (Hayworth), but certainly not 1920s (or 1930s). The Bob cut ruled the 1920s fashion hairdo in general and Hollywood in particular.
• The use of Natural motives like grapes and leafs resembles Art Nouveau (1910), rather than the machine-minded roaring twenties Art Deco.
• The Typefaces are atypical to 1920s news-press and graphical style - to w i d e to be 'Deco'?
• The Word-processor-style cast paragraph is "narrowing" a bit too neat?
• The single-lead Top-star credited but not shown? - Modern times practices perhaps, but certainly not classical Hollywood.
• Third-billed Stedman(playing the mother) kissing who, but her husband (Gordon)? Highly awkward. 18 yrs old Bow did the kissing be sure of that.

I was about to add another 'rational' as I stumbled over the fact that "Robert Benedict", forth billed on the 'kissing poster', isn't billed at all in the article. Peculiar and peculiar.

I turned to "newspaperarchive.com", and sure: Benedict Count de Montebello - Walter Long and Harry Van Alstyne - Robert Agnew seams to be mixed up by someone not too clever to have anything to do with Universal (or even Morgan Lithograph).

another reason the posters may vary in hairstyles or other is the same reason films were edited in different parts of the country if not the world. The sassy bob might not have been acceptible yet in let's say 'the deep south' and the kissing portrait may have been more obliging. What is popular and permissible in ie Europe, may not stand well with mid-west U.S. citizens or vice versa. That's why there can be many different posters of the same film. It goes on today. You guys make a good point about "Robert Benedict". This is evidence that could mean several things. Either he was intended for the cast and a last minute change after poster was printed, he may have been in a Euro/foreign release only version, though I doubt it, it could just be a plain mistake. According to IMDB there is one(1) Robert Benedict born 1970. Regarding your claim that "spelling typos" where "abound" during the silent era; I feel you enter deep water. That one you need to verify. I can't remember I ever saw a misspelled color movie-poster from the 1920s. When it happened, it was surely retracted and reprinted. Just because the sphinx have no nose today, it doesn't mean Egyptians smell bad yesterday. Don't underestimate the people of the 1920s.

In conclusion: The 'kissing poster' is totally detached in place and time from the original 1924 feature, and could only survive in our repository as an example fraud.Parrotistic (talk) 23:02, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

You're wrong and show not your knowledge of silent era posters. You plucked one out of random to find fault with, and it looks that it may have faults, but doesn't mean it's not of the period, which is my main concern. I showed where you could compare posters and they were produced by the same maker. To prove my point that your knowledge is lacking, here's a silent poster with an error in , see if you can spot it:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920/II film).

I'd go into other minutae about film posters and actually show you, but I'm not going through the trouble. Silent posters weren't perfect, and it shocked me too as I found these things out.Koplimek (talk) 00:10, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

If they keep the behavior up after the warnings, you can report them to an admin or WP:AVI as this kind of behavior is damaging to the project. I'm sorta late on the uptake regarding this issue, but I'm fairly certain the IP and the account you named are a sockpuppet of a blocked user who has a habit of adding poorly sourced content to articles regarding religion and sexuality. Well, we are suppose to add categories but they still need to be supported by text and citations - especially ones that can be challenged like religion. I personally don't agree with religious and sexuality categories (unless the person is notable because of their religion or sexuality), but I don't make the rules :). Anyhow, both the IP and Michaela Power 2011 were blocked earlier. (S)he usually targets old film stars (like Clara Bow, Sylvia Sydney and Barbara Stanwyck) and old movies articles so if you see the same behavior on articles like that by seemingly "new" users or the same IP address, please contact me or feel free to open an SPI yourself. Also, big thanks for bringing this matter to my attention and for leaving warnings on their talk pages. Once I saw your warnings, I made the connection that I probably would have missed otherwise.
