Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, one or more of the external links you added to the page Republic of Ireland do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. - and other places, too - Alison ❤ 19:00, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did in Blarney. It is considered spamming, and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising. Thanks. ww2censor 19:03, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
- Honestly, Paul. I'm reverting your spam as fast as you add it. Please stop - Alison ❤ 19:09, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
On external links
editHello Paul--I monitor West Cork and a number of other Ireland-related pages, so I noticed the recent additions/reversions by you and Alison. Simply put, the problem is that the URL you're attempting to link appears to be a tourism/business portal, hence linking to it from Wikipedia is liable to be viewed as an attempt to profit from Wikipedia's visitor traffic. External links to commercial sites are a grey area; if such a site provides unique information that obviously complements Wikipedia's encyclopedic content, a link is usually permitted. See "External link spamming" under WP:SPAM for more information. Would also suggest reading WP:NOT. It's the sort of thing one has to get a feel for. Dppowell 19:25, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Dppowell, Sorry that certainly wasn't my intent (I'm new to this). I believe my site, as a community based website offers local information to the people of Cork together with visitors to Cork. Please could you advise on how I should add an external link correctly? Thanks, Paul
- I can see where you're coming from all right, but Wikipedia is not just a collection of links. That's what DMOZ is for. We get so many external links being added that we have to be majorly choosy & linkcruft is a huge problem here, especially portals. Also, it appears that you're just here to promote your own website which is not what we're about. The external links policy is at Wikipedia:External links & you should probably have a good read of this before editing further. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help here - Alison ❤ 20:32, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your help and assistance, Alison (Sorry again).
