Edit-athon at Civic Hall

edit

This was one of the more delightful of our Wikicoaching sessions. I got to chat with old-time colleagues (some of them were bright teens when we became friends; others are fogies as ancient as myself) and meet new smart, sweet, lively ones like you. I hope to see you and the others again at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC. Some of my fellow coaches yesterday were people whom I introduced to editing years ago. And darn it, better coaches now than me. Journalists and scholars are among the most capable classes of students; they tend to understand already many points that confuse some of our other recruits. Of course, one never knows, and sometimes a retired telephone wire puller can fit in.

One kind of editor we fail to meet at these sessions are the mean, sneaky, unpleasant ones. They are not many, overall, and they mostly haunt the politically sensitive articles, though they have been known to wander more widely. Anyway the abundance of trolls in politics is one reason we don't encourage new editors to do much with those articles. More advanced editors can accomplish more in those snake pits.

Anyway, you're on my watchlist, which doesn't mean your article editing will automatically come to my attention but discussions here in your Talk Page will. If you need help, there's a "WP:Teahouse" to discuss especially newbie questions, or just leave a message in my Talk Page. Lots of old-timers like me are eager to help smart new editors. Agreed it was delightful! As I only started my Wikipedia editing less than one week ago (after a long time away due to much paid work, and an outsized fear of mean Wiki editors), and then I found myself able to attend the Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC — I do not believe in "woo woo" stuff (and have in fact been a guest at a CSI event) but I felt the whole experience was very bashert. See: Shidduch#Bashert
I still have so much to learn, but thank you for answering all my dumb questions... and OK, maybe I had one or two good questions? Debatable!
Thanks again and yes I'll go to the Teahouse to get answers otherwise you will go from retired telephone guy — to full time unpaid porter of my many questions! But seriously, I thought the event was great. And I even ran into an old friend there, one whom I was very happy to see.
All best, PaulieZiegfeld (talk) 16:24, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Internet fora in general tend to amplify the powers of nasty blowhards but the work ethic and rules of engagement of Wikipedia tilt the playing field somewhat more towards honorable, sincere, friendly collaboration. In some areas such as New York, Wikians are concentrated thickly enough to hold in-person meetings. We have one or two almost every month. A few times a year we have big WMNYC ones like Friday's Wikicurious or January's Wikipedia Day, and usually a summer Wiknic or two that's just casual eating and chatting on the grass among the like-minded. For me it's great fun to be among younger, quicker minds who are polite enough to slow down a bit to help the old and feeble keep up.
The plague made a big surge towards Zoom, Google Chat, and other video discussions among Wikians. Some of this has continued. Indeed, video conferencing has been business as usual for close to twenty years among the high and mighty, for example SWAN. On my humbler level, the monthly Wikipedia:Meetup/Philadelphia is rarely in a physical room anymore but is small enough to be dominated by two exceedingly smart and generous librarians. Wikipedia:WMDC also has videomeets almost every month. The big annual worldwide Wikimania conventions have resumed for the jet set, and the almost as big annual Wikipedia:WikiConference North America which we sometimes go to by Wikitrain. Hmm, I just looked at that page and realized that I was at every single one of them, some of them as a worker, more often just another conferee.
Perhaps you (and your friend) would like to meet me at a convenient location such as a restaurant or a library with good Internet and a table where we can discuss and demonstrate methods. Or leave the laptops at home and just talk. Many places in Manhattan and nearby Brooklyn might be good, though I'm especially fond of the Rubenstein Atrium at West 62nd Street.

Jim, your comments are so appreciated and I was waiting for time to respond properly, and to delay is not to forget, but to have this nagging at me. Thanks for all the info and yes, as I edit, so many more questions are coming to me, especially on topics regarding biography, formatting, proper sourcing, and translations needing updates. I would very much go for the idea of meeting up in the Atrium or similar. Time is not on my side due to work obligations, but I'd make time, as it's really interesting to me and you know it all, or if you don't, I'm sure you know how to find it all. Wow Ian, thank you so much. I also really enjoyed your user page... so many cool interests. May I ask a very dumb question? How did you find me? Did my adding the WIR badge send a smoke signal to anyone and everyone in the group? Or was it something else? I've been working in online stuff since the earth was still cooling but I'm still plum Wikignorant. In fact I'm kind of worried that it did alert the world I was here, but then again, in the words of Bob Dylan, I'm "invisible now, I've got no secrets to conceal." PaulieZiegfeld (talk) 14:26, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
OK! Ha. I now see the answer to my questions by reading the new members page. Funny but I added the box — having no idea there was a WIR members page. I came in the back door. Thanks for the clue, registering now. Cheers! PaulieZiegfeld (talk) 14:29, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
To answer your not so dumb question, I use this routine to check additions of the WiR template on talk pages. For others to be aware of new members, it good to register on the members page. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 12:36, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah got it, thanks! PaulieZiegfeld (talk) 15:41, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
