Declan Masterson — Issues of attribution.

edit

While drafting the present article on Declan Masterson, I attempted to summarize his music career as completely as possible, by identifying secondary sources of two types: printed material (for example, articles in past issues of Folk Roots (aka "fRoots") and online materials published on the web. In particular, I sought to satisfy myself that all facts published by online sources concerning Masterson's recordings were verifiable; to this end, I decided to check that he is credited on the recordings of artists with whom online sources state he has worked.

Unfortunately, this became problematic concerning a number of artists quoted in the following online sources:

  • Allmusic – Declan Masterson's biography includes: John Denver, the London Symphony Orchestra, the "National Symphony Orchestra", and Bono. Furthermore, in the case of the "National Symphony Orchestra", it is highly likely that an Irish musician would have worked with the Irish National Symphony Orchestra; however, the Allmusic biography links the name "National Symphony Orchestra" to its own article on the American National Symphony Orchestra.
  • Artists Direct – Declan Masterson's biography includes: Christy Moore, Planxty, John Denver, the London Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, and Bono.
Also mentioned are the following film scores: "In addition to touring the United Kingdom with Whelan's musical extravaganza, Riverdance, he performed on the soundtrack albums of Whelan's films: Some Mother's Son in 1996 and People of the Sea in 1997. Masterson also performed on the soundtracks of In the Name of the Father in 1993 and The Secret of Roan Inish in 1994." [Bio summary was written by Craig Harris, Rovi].
  • telusplanet correctly mentions: Patrick Street, Moving Hearts and Róisín Dempsey.
  • Interestingly, CD Universe includes the following list, which is almost entirely correct: Patrick Street, Anuna, Celtic Orchestra, Michael Londra, Moving Hearts, Reeltime, Townes Van Zandt, Clannad, Zoe Conway, Tommy Fleming.
Except that I could not find evidence on any of Reeltime's recordings.

However, here is verifiability information that could be used to assess Declan Masterson's association with all the artists named, problematically, in the biographies listed above, and then decide whether to include any or all of these names into the article, or not:

  1. Bono
  2. Christy Moore
  3. Elmer Bernstein – is associated with Brian Masterson (director of and recording engineer at Windmill Studios in Dublin and is actually mentioned in the Windmill Lane Studios article (1st paragraph, 3rd line; My Left Foot). Both Brian Masterson and Bill Whelan are credited at the IMDb website, but not Declan Masterson.[1]
[Note: Could this be a case of one Masterson (Declan) being confused with another (Brian)?
Or was Declan Masterson brought into the recording session, but not credited as a contributing musician in the cast?]
  4. John Denver
[Note: Could "John Townes Van Zandt" have sounded like "John Denver" during an interview?]
  5. London Symphony Orchestra
  6. "National Symphony Orchestra" –
[Note: Which one? The Irish National Symphony Orchestra, or the American National Symphony Orchestra?
Action: Include the Irish National Symphony Orchestra in the article. ツ Pdebee.(talk) 00:31, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
  7. Planxty – I possess all the Planxty recordings, and Declan Masterson is not credited on any of them.
[Note: Could 'Planxty' have been confused for 'Patrick Street', since Andy Irvine (whom Masterson joined in Patrick Street) also played in both bands; plus Bill Whelan was also in the final line-up of Planxty?]
    Action: Exclude Planxty from the article. ツ Pdebee.(talk) 00:31, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
  8. Reeltime –
  9. Van Morrison

Film scores:

  1. In the Name of the Father (1993) – Masterson is not credited in the extensive cast list at IMDb.
  2. The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) – [Masterson is credited with playing uilleann pipes.]
  3. Some Mother's Son (1996) – [Masterson is credited with playing Uilleann pipes, Bouzouki, Whistles.]
  4. People of the Sea [BBC documentary] (1997) – Whelan is credited as 'Music Composer'; Masterson is not credited.
