Glass Pinata

May I ask why Glass Pinata was deleted? This is actually a legit band w/ many aspects to prove it. Including press and publications.

Rollback abuse

I agree with your comments for declining rollback for User:Hkansagra. However, I was looking at his allegations against User:Tedmund, and it does seem that this user is abusing rollback, e.g. [1]. I'm inclined to remove rollback from this user, but would like a second opinion first. (It does not seem to be edit warring, just reversion of good faith edits). Incidentally, is there any page for proposing/discussing cases of rollback abuse? —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 15:03, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:HAU, Status, and you!

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible system) - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 23:08, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Adopt a user sysop

Hi Pedro...

I'm a sysop on portuguese wikipedia... but I want to help more, here in the en.wiki. I know the Policies and guidelines and the Manual of Style of the portuguese wikipedia. I like'd to combat the vandalism here (like i do there), but don't know how you do that here. You cam help me?

Béria Lima Msg 13:12, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Of course, I'd be only too happy to. Generally most activity focusses on Recent Change patrol. The main tools available are undo and non administrator roll back - which you will be familiar with from pt.wiki. Also WP:HUGGLE is a seriously powerful tool in dealing with poor edits. How would you like me to assist (apologies BTW, I don't speak Spanish or Portugese despite my username!) Pedro :  Chat  14:43, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just read (and thoroughly enjoyed) your /Nutshell 2 page.

I liked it so much, I made a modified "This page in a nutshell" thingy. If you're interested, it's at User:J.delanoy/sandbox#Randomness.

Done. The interwiki links are transcluded through the template documentation - [[]] does the trick. I should also point out that non-admins can still add that - the template itself may be protected but the documentation isn't. WilliamH (talk) 12:01, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Closing the RFA - help needed

Hi,

I'm still learning admin stuff, and I must confess that I am not too sure what happens about closing. I followed the instructions at WP:GRFA, but wasn't aware about the untransclusion (thanks for that) and what lists it gets added to. I guess I assumed a bot did all that.

Could you do it, please, and I'll make a note of what you did from watching your contributions? Or, if you know where the list of instructions are for what ban be done for a non-crat closure, please let me know. Thanks! StephenBuxton (talk) 11:32, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Not sure why this discussion is taking place on Pedro's talk page but anyway. What are we here for? To make friends, or to build an encyclopedia? You have to break eggs to make an omelette do you not? Who cares how many facebook kiddies are upset by being called facebook kiddies? Who cares how many editors are upset by being accused of being too eager for whatever status "administrator" is thought to bestow. Kurt's position is well-known and justifiable. Live with it. Hell, even perhaps think about it. --Malleus Fatuorum (talk) 23:13, 19 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

A favor

Hey Pedro! I know you get this a lot, but I couldn't think of anybody else better suited for the task. I know you spent a lot of time helping me prepare for a potential future role as an administrator, and I'm continually grateful. During that time I asked you to review my work as I value your opinion eminently. I was wondering, would it be too much trouble to give me your absolute honest opinion regarding my work since my last RfA? Kind of an informal editor review if you will. I would appreciate any positive and negative critiques you could offer. Wisdom89 (T / C) 09:43, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

No worries - give me a mo! Pedro :  Chat  09:46, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
No concerns here. What I particularly like is the help in admin areas such as AIV and UAA - removing false positives and vandalism reports that will not lead to a block. That kind of clerking is particularly handy. The only comment I'd make is that it seemed to me that since your last RFA you've been quite quick to oppose others - however looking at recent edits this is perhaps more of an impression rather than reality - or maybe you came out after your RFA a bit jaded but have settled back? Other than that all I see is what I've generaly allways seen - a diverse and productive editor! You also seem to have perhaps "calmed down" on some exchanges where in the past you might have been more "boisterous" - again maybe that's just a perception. Pedro :  Chat  09:56, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I can understand that assessment, it really was unintentional. I certainly was miffed at the last RfA, that's for sure, but honestly, I don't think it impacted my voting at RfA. If you recall, that was one of the major factors for why it failed in the first place - my oppositions (if you remember the whole "this isn't RFB" fiasco). Thanks for your input Pedro, always appreciated. One thing is for sure, I've become just slightly more brusque I suppose. I'll try and tone it down abit. Possible RFA

Since more and more people are voting oppose on RFAs in which users are being "admin-coached", I'm not completely sure my coaching should continue. Nevertheless, i would still like to finalize my knowledge of an administrator's roles here on Wikipedia with you, in a non-coaching way. Thanks, --Meldshal (§peak to me) 16:49, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bit late to be worried about that now I'd suggest. Might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb. ;-) --Malleus Fatuorum (talk) 17:01, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Meldshal, you shouldn't stop your admin coaching just because people oppose you for silly reasons such as that. A lot of great candidates get shot down for silly reasons like this. RFA is a monster, but remember to be yourself, not the "ideal RFA candidate". --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 17:32, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, are there any obvious examples of RfAs that have failed because of admin coaching? I know that it produces a few bullshit opposes (ahemKURTahem), but has it actually derailed an RfA? Tan ǀ 39 17:59, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Enigmaman comes to mind, as does Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Wisdom89 3, both with several opposes for the perceived or real concern over being "manufactered" admin candidates, amongst other oppose rationales. Keeper ǀ 76 18:04, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I dunno, I disagree. You're right that there were "manufactured admin" comments and a few poor-faith opposes, but most of the opposition for those two was based on conduct and diffs. I'm certainly not saying I agree with them, I'm just observing. Regardless of whether I'm interpreting those opposes correctly or not, my main point here is that without any actual reasons to oppose, admin coaching is still a "net positive" (apropos for this talk page) and I don't see a good reason for Meldshal42 to quit. Just my two cents, carry on. Tan ǀ 39 18:10, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I didn't go back and actually look at either, you're probably right. E-man's stood out exactly because he hasn't ever been thru formal coaching, yet somehow came across that way, more of a curiousity than anything else. I don't dispute that there were other concerns with both editors, those are simply the two that came to mind. And, now I'll let Pedro actually answer your question...:-) Keeper ǀ 76 18:56, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Speaking of mine: coaching wasn't the primary reason that caused it to fail, but take out the opposes for "coached", and a 'crat likely closes it as a successful. That could be said for a few other things as well. It was indeed interesting that one doesn't have to be coached to get opposes for being coached. I think I mentioned that on WT:RFA afterwards. :) I guess if people view you as a "coached candidate", whatever that means, you don't have to have gone through the actual process or have an actual coach, for that matter. Enigma message 19:06, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think the bigger issue behind Meldshal's question remains unanswered though. Pedro has made some strides towards decoupling "How to Pass an RfA" from "How to be a good administrator", but I'm still sceptical that's been fully decoupled. But hey, I was born sceptical, and hopefully I'll manage to die sceptical, even doubting my own death. --Malleus Fatuorum (talk) 19:19, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

All, as ever a fine and excellent selection of thoughts and ideas from some very experienced Wikipedians. The matter at hand, of course, is whether User:Meldshal42 would suffer at WP:RFA from "admin coaching". As noted above I have done my best to try to distinguish "Coaching" (as a one-on-one guide to pass RFA - a bad thing) as against "mentoring" (a collaborative approach to ensure new administators are not only the best that can be found, but also able to deal with the tool-set and the demands that can come with it, from day 1). Regretfully, I feel the answer is moot. Meldshall, I apologise but I do not believe you are ready to be an administrator. User:Meldshal42/Mentoring refers. I know from your user page that you were seeking adminship during this summer. I'm afraid this is unlikely. I would urge you to continue to enjoy Wikipedia and to set aside concerns about being an admin. I would also urge you to take pride in being an editor of this work, and to continue your hard work here, which is not unappreciated. Again, please do not feel too let down by this, but I'm afraid an RFA would certainly fail at this time. Pedro :  Chat  21:28, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Let me qualify that, as I do not intend to, nor ever could I, speak for the community. Please by all means run for RFA, but my experience and judgement of the community here (exactly two years as noted above with about ten months as an admin) leads me to the conviction that an RFA would fail. I'd prefer you to defer for a while rather than be put down by a failed request. Again, I hope this doesn't make you feel upset and re-iterate that you should take great pride in your work and contributions here. Pedro :  Chat  21:45, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
To play Devil's advocate, it may be that Meldshal is concerned about the apparent inverse correlation between time spent editing wikipedia and success at RfA? Perhaps that's why time is of the essence? Whatever the reason, I'm inclined to agree with Pedro; I can see very little chance of an RfA passing whether or not admin coaching is continued with. Not saying that's right, not saying that's wrong, just saying that's the way it is. --Malleus Fatuorum (talk) 22:40, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Wow, I didn't expect to cause such a ruckus! Pedro, I only asked you because Ultraexactzz was leaning towards nominating me, but I told him to wait so I could get your opinion. I really expected only to get Pedro's opinion, not any more! Anyway, thanks for that guys, I appreciate it. I've decided on my own to wait a bit and get "mentored" by Pedro as Malleus and Pedro suggested. And if I fail my RfA because of "coached" opposes, whatever. --Meldshal (§peak to me) 12:22, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

My first encounter with Pedro, so far as I recall, was his opposition to one of my RfAs. It's difficult to find the words to describe how I feel about that now ... actually it's not. They're "couldn't care less". Pedro acted honestly, which is what I would always trust him to do. --Malleus Fatuorum (talk) 23:50, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I still wanna cigarette. Or, as I originally posted to Pedro's page: breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out.........Keeper ǀ 76 23:55, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Pedro is awesome. When I'm not spending time thinking about how great I am as a contributor, I start to think how I could act more like him. Happy 2nd, P - DRO! Gwynand | TalkContribs 00:12, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I couldn't help it Peds, my first post to you was this, which frankly, I thougt was a long long time ago, and not merely 4 or 5 months ago. I still desperately want a cig. You have no idea, (but if you quit, you will). You're the man, Peds, I look up to you and look forward to everything you have to say regarding this bizarre little online community. Cheers my friend. While I may not agree with your food choices, I couldn't imagine this project without you. You do fantastic work here, and I'll be keeping an eye out for this. I wish you the very happiest of Wiki-birthdays, my friend. May you have many happy returns! GlassCobra 00:38, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
