Charles Lynch
editHi Peter. You added another recording to the short list already on Charles Lynch (pianist)'s page. I can't find any other reference to it online. Was it ever available commercially? Jim Bruce (talk) 15:07, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Jim. I've had the record for years and thought I would add it to the list. I received it as a present. I think it might have been released to raise funds for Charles who was in poor circumstances as is mentioned in the article. It was promoted by the Cork Dance Company - possibly it was only available in Cork - I'm not sure. Maybe its worth a fortune!? PeterClarke 14:48, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Peter. I would be interested to know what he plays on the LP, especially if it includes any of the less well known repertoire, e.g. anything by Irish or English composers. Jim Bruce (talk) 10:20, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- Jim, I notice that the inner sleeve has a sticker "Eason Record Shops - Guaranteed Unplayed" which would suggest that the record was commercially available. Side 1: Sonata Quasi una Fantasie in C sharp minor (Beethoven Op. 27 No. 2); Side 2: Pastorale and Capriccio (Scarlatti-Tausig), Fantasie Impromptu in C sharp minor (Op. Post Chopin), Coda Prologue - The Sleeping Beauty (Tchaikowsky). This last suggests to me a transcription for piano - I have in my mind that Lynch went in for these. Incidentally, the record is in mono, the album cover has a photograph of Lynch wearing a white tie on the front and there is a biography on the back. PeterClarke 09:52, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks again Peter. Interesting selection - that LP is definitely worth holding on to. He was a marvellous musician. Jim Bruce (talk) 17:49, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

I see you added a link to the Ballymote page to List of Irish Towns with a Market House. Have you any further information about this house? As I live near Ballymote, I could perhaps add a bit to this page about the house, maybe even photos, Etc. --The.Q | Talk 14:12, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Ballymote Co. Sligo Market House
editHi The.Q See http://cloghmore.bravepages.com/sligo/ballymoteMH.html for photograph. Could you find out when it was built and what its current use is? Any other "facts" would be most interesting. Peter Clarke
(I'm not sure if I'm using this "Discussion" area correctly. -pjc
- Peter, I recognise the building, alright. It's right in the centre of town, at "The Rock" (i.e., the hill-top in the middle of town, opposite the Anglican church). I believe it's being used by the HSE, I think as a day-centre for adults with learning disabilities. I'll try to find out, though over the next few days, and get back to you. --The.Q | Talk 11:40, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
- The.Q, Any luck in getting info? Peter Clarke 11:27, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, Peter. I checked it out, and I was right. It is part of the South County Sligo Community Mental health Service of the Health Service Executive, and is used as a day-centre. The only reference I could find to it online was just an address and phone number on the HSE NW area contact page, which just mentions The Rock, Ballymote and a phone number. --The.Q | Talk 14:23, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi The.Q, Well done for that info - I have updated the page accordingly - perhaps you could put a photo of it on the Ballymote page?
Recent Irish sport edits
editYour recent Irish sports edit are unfortunately, mostly, adding external links into the main text instead of in the external links section where they belong. It would be better if you write a short piece about the sports available in the towns and put any appropriate links to any clubs websites in the external links section. This applies to at least Balbriggan, Carlow, Bray and Bantry that are on my watchlist. In the case of Bantry you added redlinks to potential Wikipedia articles that are unlikely to be added, and even if they are, will unlikely be anything more than stubs. I suggest you revert or reedit to the more usual layout for your those similar edits. Hope that helps. Cheers ww2censor 02:50, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your suggestions. I'll check the pages you mention. Peter Clarke 14:13, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Province of Munster
editYou have recently been adding a Province of Munster edit to several articles. For those articles that have an infobox, I consider your addition redundant as that date is in the infobox already. Perhaps you would reconsider these edits because anyone needing to know where a town is does not need to know in the intro that a town is in Munster. Hope you agree. Cheers ww2censor 19:59, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
- Fair point! - if they have an infobox. Peter Clarke 20:01, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Edits to articles on Northern Irish politicians
editHi - please don't add articles to a categories of which they are already in a subcategory, unless there is a compelling reason. Also, I've remove the SDLP logos from the article to which you added them. Following a similar discussion about the DUP logo, it became clear that this is likely to cause copyright problems; we can claim the logo as fair use in the article on the party, but not elsewhere. Category:Republicanism in the United Kingdom
editI see your adding this category to lots of Irish articles, wouldn't it be easier to add this category Category:Irish Republican Movement rather then what your doing to every single article as the majority of them link to this.--padraig 14:12, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Padraig, I don't think so. I am adding the Category to articles relating to 1. Irish Republicans who operate/operated out of Northern Ireland (part of the UK) or Irish Republicans in Ireland in pre-Partition times (also part of the UK). This excludes Irish Republicans who operate/operated out of Southern Ireland/Irish Free State/Republic of Ireland e.g. Bertie Ahern (member of Fianna Fail - (the Republican Party).Peter Clarke 14:24, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- "Republicanism in the United Kingdom is a movement in the United Kingdom which seeks to remove the British monarchy and replace it with a republic that has a non-hereditary head of state."
- All of the Irish people that you have added seek/sought independence for Ireland and have expressed no opinion whatever on republicanism in the United Kingdom. There is no way any of them belong in this category. Please revert all of them immediately. Scolaire 17:11, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Good point, they are two different issues and not related, I think this category should be removed from these articles.--padraig 17:53, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Not so. Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. So is Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, etc. Republican movements in these areas should be acknowledged. Peter Clarke 07:01, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Peter, look at the top of the category page:
Now look at the top of the article: I have quoted it above. You have not been involved as far as I can see in building the category or the article. There is no consensus for adding these articles to the category. It is a POV notion of yours and makes a nonsense of the category because the reader can no longer find the British republicans (as defined above) among the Irish republicans. Please revert all of them immediately. Scolaire 07:54, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- Its not a matter of consensus - its that the use of the category is simply wrong for the additions Peter made to it (for the reasons you stated yesterday, above). Moot point, in any case - the cat has been removed from the Irish-related entries now. BastunBaStun not BaTsun 11:19, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- It seems to me that the Category is so narrow that no Republicans of any of the celtic parts of the UK could ever be considered - perhaps the Category should be renamed: Republicanism in parts of England that are not Celtic. Peter Clarke 11:08, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
- It seems to me that the category is fine as it is. Why don't you just let it go? Scolaire 15:53, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

The United Kingdom was created by the Act of Union (1800, effective from 1 Jan 1801) between Great Britain and Ireland - so why not call the article Republicanism in Great Britain and Ireland ? A bas les aristos! R.doak (talk) 07:30, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Image Cats
editI'm not sure where it is stated that images should really be in categories with image in the titles. However it is better if all images are in commons where they can be accessed from all of the projects. In commons they have a much better structure for categorizing images. Speedy deletion of Image:Customs, Tolls or Duties - Corporation of Kinsale.jpg
editA tag has been placed on Image:Customs, Tolls or Duties - Corporation of Kinsale.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Customs, Tolls or Duties - Corporation of Kinsale.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Irish Free Sate Passport
editMany thanks for uploading image of Healy-era 'Request page'. Could you include axact date and place of issue as wording changed rapidly and controversially wrt this specific page. RashersTierney (talk) 19:33, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
- The 'Tim Healy' passport was issued 22 Aug 1927 at the Passport Branch of the Department of External Affairs, Dublin for 1 year. A second one I have was issued Dublin, 5 Aug 1930 - the 'Request page' has Patrick McGilligan instead of Tim Healy and a third issued Dublin 11 Jan 1941 has the signature of the Secretary of the Department External Affairs - looks like S B Breathnach. I see what you mean about it changing rapidly - the wording also changed from one to the next. Also the list of countries varied - the 1941 passport has Spain crossed out and is stamped "This passport is not valid for Spain or Spanish Morocco.". The 1927 passport includes "Palestine". PeterClarke 11:36, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- Does the 1931 passport still have the cover signature 'window'? The exclusion of Spain in the '41 passport relates to the State's attempt to restrict volunteers enlisting (and so maintain neutrality) from 1936. Would be great if you could upload as many images as possible. The seemingly minor differences in these documents contains a real 'hidden history'. Thanks again for your efforts. RashersTierney (talk) 12:13, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- The name window is on all three passports. I will upload further images in the next day or so. PeterClarke 12:21, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- Correction - I just realise that the expiry of one of the passports was 11 Jan 1941 - it was issued 11 Jan 1936. Sorry for confusion. See Patrick McGilligan and Department of Foreign Affairs (Ireland) for new images. PeterClarke 13:52, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- Very interesting that by 1936, the request in French has been temporarily dropped and that the Irish cursive script has been 'gaelisised'. RashersTierney (talk) 16:47, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- Also that the signature goes from Governor to Minister to Secretary of Department - perhaps in an attempt firstly to reduce the standing of the Governor then to depersonalise the signature - or am I reading too much into it? PeterClarke 11:47, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
- When you have the State as the designer I think all these symbols have some significance. Thats what makes these subtle changes so interesting. RashersTierney (talk) 13:05, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
- See also Revenue stamp for Irish passport stamp (1939) PeterClarke 15:53, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- A limited no. of passports were also issued by the 'Provisional Government' in 1922 (for use by official reps.). These were essentially British passports with a modified request page. I don't recall the format of the revenue stamp used on these documents. Was it a standard British revenue stamp overprinted or otherwise modified? I recall that Denis McCullough was issued with such a passport for his trip to the US (to keep Devoy and other Clan na Gael inside the tent). Interestingly, he was also issued with an 'Irish Republic' Emigration Permit at this time in case republicans in any way attempted to challenge the legality of his leaving the country. RashersTierney (talk) 16:28, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- I was not aware of the earlier passports. It is interesting that they used Eire on stamps but Irish Free State on coins and passports. PeterClarke 16:42, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Advice re List of Irish botanical illustrators
editPeter - I noticed that the above list has been proposed for deletion and that you objected on the talk page. A quick review of the article tells me that the rationale for deletion isn't valid but the article certainly could be improved in few ways. If you sincerely believe the article should stay and are willing to begin making improvements, then here's what I suggest you do:
- Remove the PROD notice from the article and explain why you believe the article should not be deleted.
- Begin improving the article by do two things to each entry:
- Change the sourcing to in-line citations. Right now, a reader must open a web page to see where the information came from. In-line citations will allow reader to see where the information came from in notes section. (I will change one shortly as an example)
- For each entry, expand the description of the illustrator to one or nor more than two sentences or phrases that explains their accomplishments, contributions, awards, genre, etc. Maybe include if application their most famous publication.
- Add a few actual botanical illustrations by some of the artists along the right side of the article to improve overall appearance.
- Strengthen the lead-in to explain a bit more about Botanical Illustration, its history and contributions to knowledge. Tie in the Irish connection. Leave no doubt as to inclusion criteria.
- Consider reorganizing the article away from a purely alphabetical list. Consider grouping the entry into eras, genere or maybe types of works contributed to.
- If there are red-linked entries that you just can't source, you are better off leaving them off the list, since any editor could challenge their validity.
Many of the ideas are contained in this essay: Creating a Better List. I think this list is a good one and will be much better with a few improvements.--Mike Cline (talk) 13:59, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- PS there are lots of broken web links in the article, changing to in-line citations will help you fix those.--Mike Cline (talk) 14:20, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
