SMS Goeben

edit

Peters, while your edit to SMS Goeben is helpful it is unreferenced and as such it will need to be deleted unless a verifiable reference is put up. Thank you Spudinator (talk) 15:24, 1 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please stop adding unreferenced material to SMS Goeben or it will be reverted. Spudinator (talk) 00:24, 4 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Peters, seriuosly this is getting rediculus. Please stop making these unrefrenced edits the las of which, to Pursuit of Goeben and Breslau violated WP:NPOV and has been reversed. Please add references or I will be forced too reverse all of your recent edits, Regards Spudinator (talk) 18:46, 4 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, what is the problem i have added references of War Monthly, while the other whriters have none!!!83.87.191.25 (talk) 22:25, 7 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

The problem Peters, was that you wrote that section in a one-sided fashion and that is not our poloicy. And re-"Other Editors", on WP:UNBLOCK, if it was working, such an excuse is a madatory block extension. I know you are trying to help but by adding biased meterial and putting blame on other editors is not the way to go. Regards, Spudinator (talk) 22:20, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
P.S. sorry for my bad spelling, my browsers' spellcheek is broken

Great job, just one minor thing

edit

Hello Peters01

You're doing a great job adding stuff to the 40s and 30s BC articles. Keep up the good work! However, I'd just like to say one thing: It would be better if you would actually summarise what you've added in the summary field, instead of just putting down "Fix". Other than that: please keep adding! /Ludde23 Talk Contrib 10:53, 20 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Your language reference desk question

edit

Hi, Peter! Did you notice that I created a heading for your question at the the language reference desk? I don't think you "lost" your post, but if you did "lose" it, you can find it here. ( Permanent link to the version that is current as I write this. ) Thank you for your contributions here. Best regards,  – OhioStandard (talk) 16:37, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello OhioStandard, thanks for your help. But i still can't install my language (spelling) tools for the text on the Wikisite (English). I believe the MediaWike software has a feature (AutoWikiBrowser) but it is turned off. Why is it not replaced, because it is an excellent tool for my editorwork. What about my contributions, it gives me a positive feeling to add information for Wikipedia (Dutch and English). I wish it was a fulltime job and not just a hobby!!
Many thanks, Peters01 (talk) 19:40, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've never used AWB, but on English Wikipedia it's considered too powerful a tool to give to anyone who wants it. You have to request authorization. I don't know about the process at all, but ( no offence intended, of course! ) it might be that administrators here would object that your knowledge of English could be a problem. Your English is very much better than my Dutch, though! Cheers,  – OhioStandard (talk) 21:55, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi. In 432, you recently added a link to the disambiguation page Irish (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. For more information, see the FAQ or drop a line at the DPL WikiProject.

Not an admin

edit

Re this edit - you are not an administrator on the English language Wikipedia (I haven't checked if you are elsewhere). I run a bot that will fix this the next time it runs, so there's no particular harm done - but I'm curious why you made this edit. Can you explain? -- Rick Block (talk) 06:08, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry, this is a mistake because I've been a editor for many years and I was refreshing the list of names.

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to 650 may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
 • * Chen Yueyi, empress of Northern Zhou) (approximate date)

"Arabian Empire" etc

edit

Hi! First off, thanks for your work in completing the year entries. A few comments, though: first, there was no "Arabian Empire" after 750, and even before that, it is better to label it explicitly as the "Umayyad Caliphate" or the "Rashidun Caliphate". Post 750, the Muslim world increasingly fractured politically, and was certainly no longer just "Arab", as Iranian, Berber, and Turkish elements rose to prominence. Grouping events from places as diverse as Umayyad al-Andalus, Aghlabid Sicily, and Abbasid Baghdad, under the single label "Arabian Empire", is incorrect. Second, concerning the additions themselves, if you copy something from an article, please not this in your edit summary, for reasons of attribution and copyright. Furthermore, if you copy a short-style footnote, please also provide the work cited in a "Sources" section, or provide the complete reference in the footnote. A reference like "Author X, p. nnn", is worthless if one does not know which edition of which work this refers to. Cheers, Constantine 13:17, 10 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello, thanks for your comments. First, i disagree with what you say, with the introduction of a new religion, called the Islam, the world by the prophet Mohammed united numerous Arab tribes. Arab invasions of surrounding lands resulted in the establishment of one of the largest empires in history, the Arab Empire (632–1258) in Asia, Africa and Europe. Second, what about the article "sources", your are right. I will note next time the complete references in a year entry. Cheers, Peters01 (talk) 14:19, 10 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
No, simply no. "Arabian Empire" is not a term you will find in any serious scholarly work post the Umayyad Empire. Implying that there was a single polity under this term, as opposed to a cultural-religious space, that stretched from 632 to 1258 is factually incorrect. The Muslim world was politically disunited as early as the 750s and the Abbasid Revolution, which coincidentally diminished the "Arab" character of the state in favour of the universalist "Muslim" one. Some good scholarly but accessible sources on the matter are Hugh Kennedy's The Age of the Caliphates, or the Cambridge History of Islam. Have a look. Constantine 16:22, 10 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Then we disagree about this matter, because you can not singley mansion every Muslim Dynasty as a chapter in year entries, globally it is better to call it the "Arabian Empire". I know the Muslim world was disunited, but look at these books on this 'complex' and cultural religious matter: In The Shadow of the Sword (The Birth of Islam and the Rise of the Global Arab Empire), by Tom Holland or Saladin: The Life, The Legend and the Islamic Empire, by John Man. Read these books, so we can name it Arabian or Islamic Empire. And by the way I know some books at Cambridge University about this matter too. Peters01 (talk) 18:50, 10 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
"because you can not singley mansion every Muslim Dynasty as a chapter in year entries," yes you can, and yes you should. Convenience is no argument when it discards accuracy and introduces a concept that is anachronistic at best, grossly misleading at worst. Again, "Arabian Empire" implies a political entity dominated by Arabs, which is certainly not the case for the dynasties of the Iranian Intermezzo, the Turkish ghulam dynasties, and many others. A typical example of the confusion generated is what I found here: you have lumped together the Andalusi Umayyads with the Zaydids in Tabaristan, separated by geography, religious orientation (Sunni vs. Zaydi Shi'a), ethnicity (Berber-Arab-Islamicized Goths vs. Iranians), political allegiance, etc. The only common thing these two entities had was the Islamic faith, and even then they did not belong to the same branch. Their political allegiances were likewise to themselves, not to any "Arabian Empire". On Tom Holland, he is not a professional historian, but writes popular history books. Ditto for John Man. They tell a grand narrative to engage their reader, which is not always a guarantee for objectivity or accuracy. If these are your sources, they are good for a first impression, but not nearly enough for writing encyclopedia entries. I sincerely recommend Kennedy's book. Constantine 19:25, 10 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
That is your opinion and I will respect that, but I have a different historical background about this matter. So nice to discuss with you about this issue, but sadly for you I don't feel the same about this matter. Wikipedia is a Free Encyclopedia, so if you want to change it in the "Iberian Peninsula", ect be my guest, but I hope you will respect mine....by calling it the "Arabian Empire". Wikipedia is written by anonymous volunteers (and I am 'proud' to be part of it). Anyone, with internet access can write and make his one changes to Wikipedia articles, except in limited cases where editing is restricted to prevent vandalism. Thanks for you comments and I wish you all the best! Peters01 (talk) 19:49, 10 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the updates in the Year pages.

edit

Hello Peter,

Thank you for all your additions in the year pages. I see that over an 8 year period you've steadily added thousands of details to them, so far covering the years 254 BC until 924 AD. Very impressive. Because of that I've been able to (semi)automatically update the corresponding Days of the year (DOY) pages significantly (for instance year 910).
Don't feel obliged to update the DOY-pages yourself; I will monitor them for updates.
Please note the following:
The way of stating persons with the same dates of births/deaths is different between Year-pages and DOY-pages.
For instance compare section 910#Deaths to section June_22#Deaths. Although confusing this formatting has been used for years and my application depends on it.

If you're interested in how the updates are done then read this blog in which I explain how I detect and add links to the Days of the Year-pages.
Keep up the good work and nogmaals bedankt. Mill 1 (talk) 10:56, 15 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello Mill,

I am very grateful to your comments for the updates in the Year Pages. It is my second job (and hobby) to please other Wiki-readers with more info about History, because it is for me a 'holy mission' to attract more people to join the Wikipedia-foundation.

Many thanks and bedankt voor deze 'oppepper', Peters01 (talk) 19:09, 15 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome. If you could just briefly pay attention to the Please note in this section; I had to correct 926#Births (May 28) and 927#Deaths (August 24) Mill 1 (talk) 22:58, 29 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Sources in year articles

edit

Thanks for adding in sources to year articles, some of which I have recently tagged as "unreferenced". I have thus replaced the unreferenced tag with a refimprove tag in the articles 951, 953, 956, and 957; and removed the tag entirely from 952. Thank you again for sourcing unsourced year articles. GeoffreyT2000 (talk, contribs) 02:12, 19 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

No problem. I try to find the source in the content, because i have a lot of literature information. I hope that this can replace the unreferenced tags in the year articles. Peters01 (talk) 06:10, 19 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 966, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Adelaide of Burgundy (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Sources needed for Days of the Year pages

edit

You're probably not aware but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide. The linked article about the material you added to October 16 did not have any source that I could add to this page to back up your addition so this change has been undone. If you restore it, please provide a direct reliable source. Thanks. Toddst1 (talk) 23:24, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Back in September 2014 you edited the article "768". You added two short citations to "768", but did not add long references to support them. This is a common mistake if text is copied from one Wikipedia article to another (see WP:Copying within Wikipedia#Other reasons for attributing text). In this case did you copy the text from the article "Waiofar", because if so, the two long citations can also be copied from that page to fix the current problem of no long citations to support the short ones. -- PBS (talk) 17:32, 25 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello PBS,

That is a long time ago, but i think i copied from the text "Waiofar". It appears to be unreasonable in practice, but it happend some times. Peters01 (talk) 05:50, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

It is not unreasonable, but it helps everyone if the copying editor follows the advise of WP:PATT and adds an edit history comment like this: copied content from page name; see that page's history for attribution. -- PBS (talk) 08:34, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Request regarding an citation added by you

edit

Hello dear Peters01,

I have found your [addition] at the list article 636, with an harv citation, that can't point to any bare reference. Just to note you about my contribution to wp, that I check articles in my free time, with errors, that contains references with no pointing. Is it possible for you, to remember, from which main source is quoted from? A good source example to make it simple for you, could be something like this:

 • Al-Waqidi, Example pre-name (800). Here fits the book or journal title perfect.

Just put the source in the article mentioned above, under the bibliography or source section. If you need further assistance, just let me know it on my talk page. Kind regards, Abani79 (talk) 09:29, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Albani79,

The only source I can find is from Al-Waqidi (with a page reference) as mentioned in the WP article on the Battle of the Yarmuk (section: Byzantine counterattack). I hope this satisfies your question. Greetings, Peters01 (talk) 16:09, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Peters01, thank you for your reply, which Al-Waqidi is meant, I just ask, because the main source is here in question. From where did you retrieve the source, to quote with it? I attempted yesterday, to find any clues about Al-Waqidi here on wp through searching, but I haven't found nothing useful. Kind regards, Abani79 (talk) 08:27, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
