Yeah if that happens again, feel free to reprotect it. I usually don't like protecting articles linked from the main page, but when it's an organized attack like that, I have no problems with it. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 22:00, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

helpmebot
editHi pgk, I keep missing you on IRC so I'll leave a note here.
- Have you gotten around to publishing the {{helpme}} occurrences, I think you said something about putting the log on the toolserver?
- A feature request for helpmebot - would it be possible for
!helpme
to do a live check, instead of simply repeating the result of the last check. It doesn't matter much, I just thought it would be handy.--Commander Keane 10:52, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Indeed. Even though I've read upon many policy pages, and gone through pages petaining to important aspects of wikipedia, I still haven't gotten to all of them. I must admit, I do sometimes construct an action if I am ignorant; such is my nature. However, I can assure you it will never be disruptive. Perhaps I could suggest an addmenneum...? If I am ever in the gray area again, I'll make sure to make an inquiry before the desision, hopefully avoiding a negative situation. Do you think it's a good idea..? Help with writing a bot
editHi, I'm rather skilled programmer with 0 expirience in coding bots. I asked for some basic start-up help on #wikipedia-en, and Cool_Cat pointed at you. So, here's what my question is: where can I found some quick and dirty howtos for writing bots? Or, if there isn't any, can you help me by answering few fairly simple questions? I'm quite sure that I won't take you too much time. Just to tell me few very basic things, I'll manage from that point on by my self. --Dijxtra 17:56, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
- A bot for updating Wikipedia. To be more precies, a bot which would help me maintain WP:AID. So, I need to get the page, do some parsing and then upload it back. I think I saw some wiki interfaces for PERL and python.... I did dome work in PERL, so PERL's fine. I never coded in python, but I worked a lot with C++, C# and PHP, so I think that learning python wouldn't be a problem (if I got it right, python isnt that much different, but even if it is - I love learning new languages). It would be beauuuuuuutiful if that could be done in PHP, so I could make a web interface for the bot or with Java applet (which too could be accessed via web)... --Dijxtra 11:32, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, it all finally started to make some sence (I spent some time reading other bots' code). If I got ith right, all I need to access the wiki, get the page and post the page back is in wikipedia.py? OK, OK, now I started to realize that everything can be picked up from the code provided in the framework... --Dijxtra 10:04, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
Hi there, I have a problem which I hope you can help me with. I wrote a beauuuutiful bot which does wonders to my local offline copy to WP:AID. I retrieved this offline copy with the code I use in this script. So, yesterday the wikipedia.Page.get() method worked just nice, but today it throws exceptions:
C:\Documents and Settings\nick\Desktop\pywikipedia>python AIDbot.py Checked for running processes. 1 processes currently running, including the curr ent process. Getting page [[Wikipedia:Article Improvement Drive]] [Errno socket error] (10061, 'Connection refused') WARNING: Could not load 'http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3AA rticle%20Improvement%20Drive&action=edit'. Maybe the server or your connection i s down. Retrying in 1 minutes...
Then I do ctrl+c, and here's what I get:
Traceback (most recent call last): File "AIDbot.py", line 122, in ? main() File "AIDbot.py", line 92, in main page=p.get() File "C:\Documents and Settings\nick\Desktop\pywikipedia\wikipedia.py", line 3 74, in get self._contents, self._isWatched, self.editRestriction = self.getEditPage(get _redirect = get_redirect, throttle = throttle, sysop = sysop) File "C:\Documents and Settings\nick\Desktop\pywikipedia\wikipedia.py", line 4 16, in getEditPage text = self.site().getUrl(path, sysop = sysop) File "C:\Documents and Settings\nick\Desktop\pywikipedia\wikipedia.py", line 2 177, in getUrl time.sleep(retry_idle_time * 60) KeyboardInterrupt C:\Documents and Settings\nick\Desktop\pywikipedia>
So, ti obviously chokes at wikipedia.Page.get() method. Have you had any similar problems?

edityou should be less concerned with cussing and more concerned with crazy people rewriting facts with doubletalk.
now maybe i could behave a little more politely. then again, nobody was ever polite to me when they erased my articles or reverted my changes to the dozens of articles i have worked on in the past... for purely POV reasons. erasing my plain statements of fact and saying facts are 'too pov'. erasing my reference links. things like that.
and i never saw a wikipedia 'administrator' come to my rescue either. and ive done it from many different IPs so dont go looking for history. but it happened and thats why i dont trust this thing.

pgkbot suggestion/request
editI've been in #wikipedia-en-vandalism for the past few days, and I've noticed one thing that I find faintly irritating and/or improveable.
Specifically, I find it a little hard to, with the colors you're using, locate and click on the diff links - could you consider either uncoloring for them, or setting them to a somewhat more contrasting color? (In case you don't know, in mIRCScript, if you want to just end a color and allow it to revert to the default color for everyone looking at it, you just use control+k without a number after it.) I must say that yours was the most well-reasoned of my oppose votes, and it made me stop and think about why I want to be an admin. I really do plan to, for the most part, just get on with editing. However, I still see adminship occasionally being useful in my editing, and it is those occasions that made me apply.

Hash nonsense.
editNo real need to follow up on Jeff's nonsense. It fails at the first post. The hashes are salted. Because of the salt, every password hash is unique, even if they are the same password, and the chance of any two of them being the same, here or anywhere is close to zero. Probably at least in the order 1 in 2^128. Or birthday paradox might reduce that to 1 in 2^64, but it is a big bloody number (or should that be a small bloody number?), depending on the implementation.
In any case, no-one could use the wikipedia hash to 'pass the hash' on wikigadugi or anywhere else.

Your block of this user is dubious at best. It seems to rest on the fact that he removed messages from his Talk page; this is not a blockable offence. The claim that he has engaged in personal abuse isn't backed up by the examples at which I've looked, though he's been involved in slanging matches in which both sides have been hot headed. I've unblocked him; please don't block again unless there are genuine grounds. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 16:55, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that his watchlist is confrontational, and I've commented it out and asked him if he'd delete it as a sign of good faith; it's also not a blockable offence, though, as has been established in many such cases (I'm doubtless on a fair fe wsuch lists myself, together with most active admins). The first bit of advice at WP:TALK struck me as good, but the reference to WP:VAND is peculiar; I don't know when it was included, but I've raised it at the Talk page. Vandalism of the encyclopædia is obviously a serious issue, and article Talk pages need to be protected too, but I think that extending the notion to user talk pages is going too far (making the process as important as the product).
- Note that some, at least, of the warnings on his page were placed there without any good reason by people who opposed him in disputes at articles, and he was perfectly within his rights to delete them. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:56, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your message. I agree that genuine warnings shouldn't be removed (this is, of course, more often a problem with anons, and there I have no hesitation in replacing the warnings, and even blocking and protecting if they're removed, because no-one "owns" and anon IP Talk page); I think, though, that when a named editor does it, it's important to check the validity of the removed warnings before taking action (in the past I've deleted mischievous and fake warnings from my own User page).
Anyway, I hope that things have sorted themselves out now; it's certainly going to be worth keeping an eye on all these editors (though I've protected the main focus of their warring, Serbophobia, which might take some of the heat off for the moment). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:27, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

The help I need
editI'm trying to get the Community Portal changed back to the version I spent many weeks working on. The page has been reverted to a version months ago, and an admin came along and locked that version. I called for a vote to get the page changed back! What I need to know is how to get the talk page system changed so that it actually promotes general feedback rather than being a mere criticism network. 'Cuz it sure seems like complainers are more likely to post on talk pagers than praisers/encouragers. It wasn't until I called for a vote that any supporters showed up on the talk page at all! How can we change this??? Can we add buttons to every page for this? --Go for it! 20:34, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

editI urge you to look at the situation closely. Please, please have a look at the history of the relevant articles. I am not getting a fair hearing here. Mel Etitis was blocked himself for 24 hours on the day in question for 3RR, and he clearly feels very frustrated that others were able to work on these articles while he was blocked. Please look into this case properly and in detail: it is not as has been presented. --Mais oui! 10:31, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
- I don't believe this: I have just read Mel Etitis accccusations in detail and found this:
- "While the AfD discussion was continuing (and it was obvious from the outset that the overwhelming consensus was to keep the article) the nominator deleted all references to the county flowers from the relevant county and city articles, citing the AfD."
- That is just not true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was User:Bwithh who did that: [1]. This allegation is unbelievable. Where on earth is a single shred of evidence to back up Mel Etitis allegations????? --Mais oui! 10:41, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for at least trying to be nice. I appreciate it. Please, please request from Mel Etitis at least some links to back up his allegation. Look very carefully at what he wrote: it is 100% opinion and 0% evidence. Please look into this, because we cannot have admins coming to immediate summary justice without even a shred of evidence. I urge you, this is most unjust. --Mais oui! 10:55, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
- You say "not to stubbornly push forward but to stop and discuss". Please see the Talk page message I left on MelEtitis Talk page 2 days ago! He chose to ignore the opportunity to discuss, and a few moments ago "archived" that message. I wonder why? Is it because he wants other Admins, like you, to believe that I will not communicate? The truth is quite the opposite, it is him that brushes off all opportunities to discuss. I demand that that bullying message he left on my Talk page is removed forthwith. He has behaved, and is continuing to behave, appallingly, and I will not let this matter rest until he has been reprimanded. --Mais oui! 12:08, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

IP block: Slashme
editHi, thanks for your post on my talk page. It seems the block has either expired, or has been removed. --Slashme 11:07, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
I see the infamous Matt Leinart vandal is back. I also see that he has fallen back on one of his many sockpuppets, "mattleinartfan" or some such, which for some reason apparently wasn't blocked, and is probably old enough to be able to get around the semi-protect option. Wahkeenah 07:59, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- Never mind, an Admin blocked him. He's a persistent little devil. He was blocked for a week, from the 2nd, and within a day of being unblocked, he was back at it. The one user has now been permanently blocked, so he'll have to find another sockpuppet to add to his list of 2 or 3 dozen. What a looney. Wahkeenah 09:29, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

editAre there any updated versions?
Hey Pgk. As you were the first to reply to Rich nffc's request to be unblocked, thought you should know he also emailed me (as I was the one who blocked him), and I've decided to give him a last chance (reduced his block to a week). He was very apologetic, and perhaps his vandalism was more a case of not really understanding what Wikipedia is, rather than an outright attempt to ruin things for others. I say perhaps, because he may just be an outright vandal. But, WP:AGF and all that, so he's on his last warning, and I'll be keeping a very close eye on him when he returns. Unblock Request
editHi, sorry for not including all the details. Here is all the information:
You were blocked by Curps for the following reason (see our blocking policy): "Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Paul2001". The reason given for Paul2001's block is: "vandalism"." Your IP address is 195.93.21.103
The block is still in place and I cannot upload images. The reason I can still edit certain pages is due to the AOL dynamic IP I am using (I think...). Thanks for your help. NepGrower 17:56, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Unprotect and Unblock Please
editYou said: "The tone and nature of your edits were to persuse and harass another editor. No if's not buts. You're the rules lawyer, point me to where the blocking policy allows for creation of multiple socks to dispute a block you disagree with. It doesn't. The block page gives you a few options, email one of the many many admins, use the mail list etc. Since you've used another sock to evade the block I'm very tempted to extend it again. --pgk(talk) 13:30, 14 April 2006 (UTC)"
- The purpose of all posts have been to get an answer to a simple question "What is the basis for the block?" No user has been pursued, if you review the history you will see that Nlu is the pursuer. In your terms Nlu is being 'harrassed'. There has been no 'harrassment' since 03:54, 8 April 2006 FriendlyFriend (Indication of support). I think reading that post will show that there is nothing aggressive. However the 'harrassed' Nlu pursued today despite the offensive treatment you allege they have received. Typically those with power are the ones with the ability to harrass. Let's just say that it depends on your perspective in who is harassing who.
- In regards to posting using sockpuppets, it appears that you are using the wrong time frame for reference. Your position appears to be that if a user is blocked and they create a sockpuppet, then they have violated policy. I agree that WP:BP does not contain reference to using socks to communicate, it is actually silent on the use. (Emails have been sent to admins, which have not ever been returned to date.)
- If you change your frame of reference you will see that the block should never have occurred in the first place. Look at the issue outlined on PoolGuy's talk page. GoldToeMarionette was not created while PoolGuy was blocked (check for yourself). GoldToeMarionette was blocked for being a sockpuppet (which is not a violation of policy per WP:SOCK). PoolGuy was blocked for having sockpuppetswhich is not a violation of policy per WP:SOCK). Therefore there was no legitimate block in place. As stated twice on PoolGuy's talk page "Per Sockpuppet#Prohibited_uses_of_sock_puppets "Users who are banned from editing or temporarily subject to a legitimate block may not use sock puppets to circumvent this." Since there was never a legitimate block all use of the sockpuppets are permitted by Wikipedia policy."
- If you assume that the block is legitimate, then using a sockpuppet to post is a violation of Wikipedia policy. The problem with that is the assumption. The original block is just not legitimate. Lbmixpro finally saw that and unprotected the page. You had not realized it yet and denied the unblock request and protected the user talk page falling prey to a false assumption.
- Unprotecting the talk page will allow dialogue there. If you can now see the issue at hand please process the unblocks and unprotects. VerifyYesVerify 01:46, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your prompt review of this situaiton. Johntex\talk 07:19, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
No, I don't really know much about that. I did not encounter Trollwatcher (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) myself during the fiasco.
Looking at Trollwatcher's block-log, it seems Musical Linguist (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) blocked Trollwatcher with an expiry time of indefinite with the summary "Has been posting links to sites that attack other users and that claims to identify them by name. Seems to be here for the purpose of making "case studies" about other users' behaviour (and adding external links). Block to be reviewed at WP:AN/I after Eas".
I assume that that means "After Easter", since the website was taking issue with editors who identify as Christian or edit Christian topics and since the attack was occurring on Good Friday when many of them might have been away from wiki.
I suggest you post a request to Musical Linguist to follow up with posting the block for review at WP:AN/I. Then we can post to Trollwatcher with the link to the original WP:ANI discussion and the new WP:ANI discussion that presumably Musical Linguist will start.
Trollwatcher's talk page is not protected, so he can make any clarification/defence he wants to make there - or we could temporarily unblock him to allow him to post to WP:ANI. Johntex\talk 19:36, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Hi, Pgk. Please see the message I posted on Johntex's talk page. Yes, "after Eas" meant after Easter, but the box only allows a certain number of characters. Trollwatcher, as his name suggests, was on Wikipedia to study the trolls, which he identified as several of the Christian editors. The Christian editors had been opposing a new user who used sockpuppets (established by usercheck and by an accidental signing of a post while forgetting he was logged on as someone else) in voting and reverting. Trollwatcher and John1838 (and a few IPs) began to post stuff on the talk page about how they were making case studies about the trolls. The website, which gave (what claimed to be) real names, photos, and the link to a personal website of users, while attacking them, was very obviously based on Trollwatcher's contributions, and John's. Location and name of spouse, children, etc. could be found from the website which Trollwatcher spread, and which he certainly contributed to. We have lost an excellent editor as a result. I e-mailed a bureaucrat with checkuser access about this block, and copied my message to Jimbo and to the Foundation lawyer. I cannot stress strongly enough what a serious attack and violation of privacy this was, and in fact the bureaucrat I contacted, who saw the website at the time that it had the photo, real name, etc. of the main victim of harassment (there are others), has already denied the unblock. Trollwatcher, contrary to what he says on his talk page, is well aware of that website, and of the connection with John1838. See here for an edit he made, signed TrollSpotter, from before he registered his account. Cheers. AnnH ♫ 22:03, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for restoring Str1977's talk page, by the way. I deleted it and restored one version just before Easter, with the intention of carrying out the full restoration job after Easter. I knew he wouldn't mind waiting. When I went back to do it, I saw you had already done it for me. Many thanks. AnnH ♫ 23:19, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Sorry about the confusion relating to this page -- even though there's history listed on that page, I am effectively the "sole author". That page is a junk page that was created due to a disagreement between myself and another user. That disagreement has since been settled. Nothing links to that page, all content on that page is already mirrored elsewhere, and it serves no useful purpose. Can't we just SD it? If not, then I'll AfD it. Struct 17:55, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Rampant Deletionism at Work, Yet Again
editI would like my page back...it was actually relatively well-written. To delete it as "nonsense" is ignorant and stupid...it said that is was under onstruction and it is inconsiderate and rude to delete a page that someone is actively in the process of editing, as you DO NOT know what it will become. I would like it returned and userfied, if possible, since there was hard work put into a genuinely true article...there was to be an external links section also, to prove the existence of such a page.back...it was actually relatively well-written. Kaspersky Trust
editHi, I suspected this user of being a sockpuppet of banned User:Zephram Stark, and asked User talk:Jayjg (who has checkuser access) to check it out. I don't know if he was definitively proved to be a sockuppet or not...it looks like he was blocked and then unblocked. Kaspersky's style of pleading innocence/pointless argumentation does seem to match Zephram's modus operandi. --JW1805 (Talk) 21:43, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Hi, Pgk. It looks like Jayjg himself was unsure whether this user were a sockpuppet or not. Apparently, he unblocked him two minutes after blocking him, but did not clear all autoblocks. I only found a few remaining autoblocks, which I removed, but the user still seems to be blocked (I can't figure out why, though). The whole thing looks like one huge misunderstanding. I communicated with this user, and am 99.9% sure there is no way in hell he is Zephram Stark. He is genuinly interested in continuing editing Wikipedia, and so far all we did is bit him. I'll leave a message to Jayjg, but could you please re-check for more autoblocks and let me know what I missed? I am taking full responsibility for this user. Gateware
editHi, Pgk. I'm requesting a new AfD rather than a deletion review because no evidence was presented in the original AfD. With no evidence on the table, the deletion certainly made sense. With the evidence currently on the talk page, the deletion needs to be reconsidered (rather than simply examining whether or not the deletion followed process, which all that an Undeletion Review is).
If the page goes through the 5-Day AfD process now and is deleted, I will not recreate it. But I regard the current page as a separate article from the one which was (originally) deleted, and I do not believe that the original deletion applies to the new expanded, justified version. Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Blocked User Circumventing Blocks
editPer User:McNeight, I'm writing to let you know that an edit made today by User:68.115.72.93 suggests continued sockpuppetry by User:Braaad. (You were the one who unblocked User:68.115.72.93 as "collateral damage".) User:McNeight also suggests User:Lady Jane Grey is involved (if nothing else, WP:CIVIL certainly applies), but the evidence there is circumstantial, so I'm going to suggest to User:McNeight that we WP:AGF until the WP:RCU comes back. Moronic Fascism
editYou sir have acted in a moronic, iron fisted and fascist way. It took me half an hour of trying to find a name not in use and then you block the one I finally register. I was going to help out on the Mobilization page using my expertise, but I don't think I'll bother now.
You didn't even give a reason for the "block". I suggest you give people a chance to contribute, instead of blocking them for no apparent reason, but to rack up your ban tally. Perhaps the criticism I hear that most Wikipedia Admins are more concerned with the oppression of real editors than ever contributing to articles themselves is correct. From what I hear, people only "revert vandalism" to the extent they get a high enough edit tally to get some admin capabilities around here.
Well I won't stick around to confirm it. I'm not going to be contributing to a project, which doesn't assume new members are going to contribute with integrity and faith, but instead are treated with suspicion and undue hostility.
Good day to you.

Unblock Request
editWhen trying to edit from a school computer, I get the block message, even if I log in to my Wikipedia Account.
I'm not entirely sure what an 'underlying IP address' is, but if you could ask me what you need from me to lift this block, I'd be more than happy to comply.
- I'm not currently using the computer I'm blocked from, but I think the reason was 'Repeated Vandalism', which makes sense as it was a school IP address, although I've never noticed anybody using Wikipedia but me.
- I subscribed to the Wikipedia mailing list from school, thinking that it may help in the unblock, and the confirmation email contained my IP address at the time, which was 195.92.163.130.
- Hope this helps.
- I will try and talk to the system administrator, but I'm not sure it will be very high on his agenda. Is there no way of allowing preregistered accounts, originating from trusted IP addresses, the chance to edit Wikipedia without letting what seems would be the whole school, edit?
- Okay, thanks. I'll get back to you.

Vandalism, IP 167.206.185.194
editLook, yes, it is a problem. But you can't cut it off for all of us just becuse some idiots in the school are vandalising. That's just wrong. If it is possible, it would make sense to only allow edite from that IP by logged in users. (once again, if it is possible.) User:Aido2002 20:01, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- First of all, I got your attention by putting the message there, didn't I? And nobody "suffers", because you, the admin, is supposed to come in, fix it, and then it's done. Also, how do you propose the network admin deal with this? What can he do? But you don't answer my (implied) question. Can you block any non-logged in edits from the IP? If you can, the problem is sloved. You can then block the offending users. User:Aido2002 21:58, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- Look, I'm not trying to start an argument with you, but really, why did you become a sysop if you didn't want to, as you put it, "put up with the vandalism," and also, the network admin has better things to do, such as... maintain the network! Look, I know you are annoyed by this, I took a look at the contrib logs. But, based on the content of the contribs, I can tell that 99.99999% is by this one group of kids, who, while I'm giving estimated statistics, make up about .1% of the school. Once again, punishing everyone for what a few kids do is just wrong. I want to come to some agreement, becuse you are depriving Marlboro Memorial Middle School of a valuable resource. And, if I am correct, the entire Marlboro K-12 distict has 1 IP. So, you are also deprivin many teachers, school staff, superintendents, etc. of the same thing. You are not only blocking a school, but an office. So, I want to make some agreement with you so that we can resolve this, and allow us to make edits at school. User:Aido2002 22:42, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- OKay, how about this: unblock the IP, but I will personally check every day for new edits from it. If I find vandalism, I will revert it, and you sysops won't have to worry about it. If I don't get to read your reply, bu tomorow, I can edit at school, I will assume you accept my offer. User:Aido2002 03:03, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well, first of all, I emailed the help desk and got the whole IP thing taken care of. And like I said yesterday, I wasn't trying to start an argument with you, so I hope you aren't annoyed with me. User:Aido2002 20:03, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well, that's not exactly what I think admins' jobs are, but it doesn't matter anymore. I will try to see what I can do, and get done, abou this issue, but it's not exactly the netowrk admin's highest priority... Although, I do know the kids dong this, and I'll tell them to stop. Thanks for your help in this issue. User:Aido2002 20:15, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

I would be happier if you allowed me to edit the talk pages and unblocked the two users. Admin
editWould you be willing to add reference to your admin status on your user page. I imagine it would save people a lot of time (: Myciconia 03:54, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- I only say that because it would help people understand that when you do actions (such as removing a request for unblock) it is an administrative decision. Myciconia 00:01, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Dante7777
editI told User:Dante7777 that I'd unblock him if he reads and agrees to our basic rules. I'll take responsibility for watching his edits closely and will reblock at the first sign of trouble. Is that OK with you? Cheers, -Will Beback 07:17, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

I now think I have developed a lead in my school's block...
editThere are un-suspecting people at my school who think all games are all right. So they download them, and get a trojan.--Gangsta-Easter-Bunny 12:11, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
