Recent changes

• Wikimedia projects use Translatewiki to translate the wiki interface. You can now use WatchTranslations to watch projects there. You would get an email if there are missing translations to your language. [1]
• There is a new dataset you can use. It shows the number of editors per country per month for a number of countries. You can read the documentation and download the dataset.

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 December. It will be on all wikis from 12 December (calendar).

Meetings

• You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 11 December at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

• You can test a new reference tool. It makes it possible to reference different parts of a source without repeating all information. You can test it on the beta cluster. You can see an example article. [2]

Need your help for revision to Lives of WWI ID Property Proposal

Good evening Andy,

Please can you assist in two areas. I am rather naive to this, and confused.

1. Would it be possible to revise the domain name details, please. In the past it did indeed finish with a .org and was 'https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/' Since June 2018, it has been revised to 'https://livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.org.uk/'

Here is a link to said Property https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/Lives_of_WWI_ID

2. As an example, would it be possible to update the entry for this man, so that the aforementioned Property / Template is utilised, please? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Edward_Ignatius_Masterson

Whilst I don't contribute to wikipedia as much as I used to, my experience with using a Property / Template is solely with the London Gazette. Once I have seen how a LOTFWW Property / Template has been entered, I can use this knowledge to populate other articles.

I'm not sure I understand your second request; do you want me to add the value to the Wikidata item about Masterson, to update the Wikipedia article, or to add Masterson as an example on the Wikidata property? Hi Andy, with regard to the second request, if I understand correctly a template and a property are the same thing. I would like to see an example of a property / template to appear in the Masterson article. The non-template content is based on cite web and is thus:

@Keith H99: No, they're not the same. A property is something on Wikidata, that holds a value about the item (subject) to which it is attached; in this case the item about Masterson is Q6133350, and on that item the property "Lives of WWI ID" (aka P4601), which I just added, has a value of "2964480" (the last part of the URL you provided above), as you can see at d:Q6133350#P4601.

Over here on Wikipedia, templates can be used for various things, one of which is to display the value of a property from Wikidata ({{cite web}} is another kind of template). There is currently no template for displaying P4601 values on Wikipedia articles. Would you like me to make one?

Hi Andy. Nobody uses the term "Lives of WW1". The happy path would be to view an output of "James Edward Masterson on LOTFWW" Is there a manner in which this can present a different title to the viewer, such as a "Lives of WW1|LOTFWW" whereby the property remains but is presented as LOTFWW. This latter term, the six initials of the platform, is the common term in more general use, when referring to said platform. Keith H99 (talk) 10:58, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

Problems

• The Linter extension helps you find technical errors in articles. It did not show new changes last week. This was because of an API problem. It is now working again. [3]
• Special:Watchlist can show the wrong information again. It does not always show which edits are read and which are unread. This is because of a database problem. The developers are working on solving the problem. [4]

Changes later this week

• You can get email notifications. You can get them immediately, a summary every day or a summary once every week. If you choose a summary you can soon choose not to get notifications you have already marked as read on the wiki. [5]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 December. It will be on all wikis from 19 December (calendar).

New Page Review newsletter December 2019

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Synonyme : incident

Hello User:Pigsonthewing - he vulture and the little girl I can see that you are better in english then I, a German. But to use the wording „and to have survived the incident.“ is for me not correct. For many years the catastrope in the Hunger Triangle was not an incident, how I see it.

Oh no - a vulture will never, never touch a living person - the boy did know this. The vultur was just waiting that the boy finished his morning shit. (real). This place was the "bathroom of the hamlet". The vultur was going for the shit not the boy. :-) But how can a westerner from the editorial staff - with a super nice bathroom - writing the editorial this know? OK - no problem. Guideline and policy news

• A request for comment asks whether partial blocks should be enabled on the English Wikipedia. If enabled, this functionality would allow administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces, rather than the entire site.
• A proposal asks whether admins who don't use their tools for a significant period of time (e.g. five years) should have the toolset procedurally removed.
• Following a successful RfC, a whitelist is now available for users whose redirects will be autopatrolled by a bot, removing them from the new pages patrol queue. Admins can add such users to Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist after a discussion following the guidelines at Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist.

Arbitration

• The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
• Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

Multiple Pink Floyd song articles turned into redirects

FYI: This edit turned a PF song article into a redirect, essentially bypassing Prod or AFD. The editor in question has been asked to stop, but there may be some damage to undo. If you have the gadget that shows redirects as green, it is easy to find these by looking through the editor's contributions. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:09, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
