Public art on Wikidata

Hi Andy – I hope you're keeping well. I learned this week (via the Wikidata newsletter) that a public art WikiProject has been created on Wikidata. This is brilliant news as far as I'm concerned, as I've been converting the subpages of List of public art in London to {{Public art row}} and its sister templates, with the ultimate aim getting all their contents onto Wikidata. The end is almost in sight for that particular project – I've finished converting 50 pages and there are only two left to be done, for the boroughs of Camden and Richmond. When I've finished those two, how would I go about converting the instances of {{Public art row}} into Wikidata items? I also created lists showing the existing Wikidata coverage for each borough here: WP:PALon/WD. Cheers, Ham II (talk) 09:33, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

@Ham II: Good work. I don't know of any tool that will convert the templated lists to Wikidata items, but the templates should make it much easier to scrape or parse the list pages. Of course, what should eventually happen is that the templates are populated from Wikidata; or better that the lists are generated by Listeria. The en.Wikipedia community is not mature enough for that, yet, but other Wikipedias can do it. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:27, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, Andy. I'll ask later at the project, which I see you've joined. Ham II (talk) 15:24, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

David Allen Green - blogger for FT, not a columnist

This is re your undo of my edit:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=David_Allen_Green&type=revision&diff=961331834&oldid=961321312

First off here's a reliable link:

https://archive.today/2020.06.08-090952/https://twitter.com/davidallengreen/status/1269680331667451911

(last tweet in that thread)

Archive.today is now an acceptable source:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Using_archive.today

Secondly if you read the existing link to the FT site,

https://www.ft.com/david-allen-green

it quite clearly states that he's a "commentator", not a "columnist" and that "[t]he blog is written from a liberal and critical perspective".

I'd be grateful if you could revert my edit.

Your first claim is that Twitter is a reliable source; it is not, and accessing via an archive does not change that. Also, in my edit summary I referred you to Columnist; please see that page. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:58, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
Are you disputing authenticity, i.e. whether the statement was made by David Allen Green himself? He's a verified user. Agree that Twitter in general is not a reliable source, however it's acceptable as a source of information about themselves. Now this is an objective fact, so DAG denying that he's a columnist is to some extent irrelevant, however there is a page listing all FT columnists and DAG is not on it. The existing Wikipedia link clearly states that it's a blog. This seems to be an important distinction, important enough for DAG to repeatedly correct it in public, so probably akin to lecturer vs reader vs professor at a UK university (who would all be called professors in the US, but a major faux pas for a UK lecturer to claim they're a professor). 2A01:4B00:8A10:7A00:3005:9A97:F137:CC5 (talk) 16:24, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
"Are you disputing... whether the statement was made by David Allen Green himself?" No. But then, as the Wikipedia page you cite says, an individual is not a reliable source, in the context of exceptional claims they may make about themselves. The FT page you cite does not claim to list "all FT columnists"; indeed, it is sub-headed "A list of writers who contribute to the Opinion section of the Financial Times". And again, see Columnist. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:49, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
Saying that you're a blogger (a lower rank in the profession) rather than columnist does not seem to be an extraordinary claim, quite the contrary. Agree that the page does not say "all FT columnists", it is simply a page listing FT columnists, and DAG is not shown there. Having said that, I think we've reached an impasse, I propose requesting 3rd opinion. 2A01:4B00:8A10:7A00:3005:9A97:F137:CC5 (talk) 17:05, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

B-P

Hi Andy, we meet when you came to Melbourne. Rosenthal's book on B-P is the only biography of B-P, as far as I can see, that is independent of Scouting. I found it a much more satisfactory biography than all the others. He has written at least one other biography. It should, in my opinion, be used as a source in the article on B-P. --Bduke (talk) 23:11, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

I have no obejection to it being used as a source; however in the material I removed it was not. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:19, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
OK. Maybe I'm getting confused in my old age. There are too many Scouting supporters (as I was long ago for many years) trying to stop his article being neutral.--Bduke (talk) 00:05, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello Pigsonthewing,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Warrenpoint Ambush. Use of Irish Tricolour.

Hi Andy. Before putting this to an RfC, I thought I'd pester another contributor for an opinion. The Irish national flag ought surely not be placed as a symbol under the 'Belligerent' section (IRA). This is the flag of a sovereign nation, and whilst the Provisional IRA use it as a symbol, it seems highly inappropriate. It also seems to imply sponsorship by The Republic of Ireland which could hardly be further from reality. I'm not sure what the precedent is here, or even if there is one. Thanks. @Hanoi Road: I suggest looking at other articles on similar topics; and at relevant WikiProject guidelines. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:56, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Superspreaders

Hey there, I think the redirect you suggested is a pretty reasonable request, but I'd like to bring it to a broader audience, so I made a thread about it here at the WP:COVID talk page. Just wanted to get some discussion about it, since COVID has some higher standards to abide by. bibliomaniac15 04:53, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
