Needs to be an easier way
I have been going through the slow process of entering sources on Wikidata, including some experiments with QuickStatements. Slow is fine for references I want to use with Cite Q. But there has to be an easier way of getting Wikidata material referenced enough to be considered reliable for use back here in en.wiki. Looking at the discussions at d:Wikidata:Project chat#Source without item and d:Wikidata:Property proposal/formal citation it seems there is strong opposition to having references be anything except complete items (with the exception of web pages for some reason). I have put together a proposal for a reference string at d:User:StarryGrandma/Sources#Property proposal. Please take a look and tell me what you think. Thanks. StarryGrandma (talk) 19:29, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
- @StarryGrandma: I can understand why you'd want such a property, but the point of Wikidata is to hold structured, machine-readable metadata, so I doubt such a proposal would succeed. As to "until we have a tool that will accept references formatted using the en.wiki citation templates to create sources as items in Wikidata", there is now a tool which can do that; see d:Wikidata:Zotero. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:17, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Andy. Any increase in referenced data in Wikidata is going to have to come from the en.wiki side. Wikipedia editors often don't know much about programming, software, or academic writing. We can't expect them to use external reference management software. After looking up the datatypes expected by Wikidata properties I have some nice Excel templates that let me paste references, authors, and publishers into QuickStatements. But even spreadsheets are too much to ask of most editors.
- I've been reading a lot of Wikidata discussions and am still working out what a reference is considered to be over there. Also coming up with more questions about how to enter sources there to use back here, which I will ask you later. StarryGrandma (talk) 22:04, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
ill links
Do you know what happened to linking new articles to where they were translated from? I used to go to the languages (left) and add. Result now "Error". But a day later it's usually linked "miraculously". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:34, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- It's now done through Wikidata. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:35, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- Can you teach me how, example Vera Nemirova? - Or just wait? - Other question: what do I have to do to make the worldcat entry for La Damoiselle élue appear in authority control? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:41, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: Have a look at d:Help:Sitelinks (or d:Help:Sitelinks/de) and let me know if any of it is not clear. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:51, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- Very helpful link, thank you! Next questions: why was I not logged in? Is there a direct way from a Wikipedia article to the Wikidata entry. - I found her linked already. - Worldcat q? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:00, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- Glad I could help. You should see a "Wikidata item" link, under "Tools" in the left-hand menu. The logged in issue is odd; I get it sometimes, too. There are a couple of causes, one being a bug in Firefox - is that what you use? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:13, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- I didn't see "Wikidata item", but that was a rather new page (2 days). How does a Wikidata item come into being? On an older one, I see it. - Yes, Firefox. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:30, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: Unless a Wikidata item already exists (perhaps because there was an article in another language), then either the person who creates a Wikipedia page also creates an item in Wikidata, or someone else sees that one is needed and does so. You should see a "Create a new item" link, on Wikidata, in the left hand column. You may also find the script described at d:User:Pigsonthewing/Setup#On_Wikipedia useful. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 08:41, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you. Not sure I understand exactly what the script does, though. I try to keep my "users" separate, intentionally. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:47, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Problems
- Some pages show the error
Lua error in mw.wikibase.entity.lua at line 34: The entity data must be a table obtained via mw.wikibase.getEntityObject
. This problem happens on pages with a Lua module that uses Wikidata. The developers are working on fixing the problem. You can fix a page by opening it for editing and then saving without changing anything. [6] - Wikidata and German Wikipedia could not be edited for an hour on 28 July. You can read why and how we could avoid it in the future in the incident report.
Changes later this week
- Some wikis already have the larger and brighter OOjs UI edit page buttons. All remaining wikis except Commons will have these from 1 August. [7]

A tag has been placed on Category:Fellows of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. —swpbT 13:39, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Andy! Hope all is well with you - I just wanted to let you know that a new user has been working on improvements to TE's page in her sandbox, and is very nearly ready to make some significant additions to the page! She has some pictures to add too. She's still relatively new to this, and I'll be helping her as best I can: if you see changes & can support her learning & feeling part of the wiki community too, that would be brilliant! Zeromonk (talk) 08:13, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Zeromonk: Sounds good, thank you. I'm well, hope you are too. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:36, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Pigsonthewing: Thankyou for helping out. I'd like to make a perfect page. Adding some pics in moment and will edit. please check my sandbox again later. I've also submitted a page on the history of medicine society. Whispyhistory (talk) 11:35, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Whispyhistory: Good work! I've published the HMS article and fixed a few style issues (we don't embolden headings; lists should not include blank lines; "thumb" images don't need specific sizes to be specified). Recent changes
- You can now see which Wikipedia language versions are read in a specific country. This tool is called Wikipedia Views Visualized. [9]
- The Architecture Committee is now the Wikimedia Technical Committee. You can read the charter. [10]
Problems
- You can get an email when a page on your watchlist was edited. You can choose not to get emails for minor edits. There is a bug that means that you then don't get an email when someone does a normal edit after a minor edit. The developers are working on fixing this. Until it has been fixed you can activate "Email me also for minor edits of pages and files" at the bottom of "User profile" in your preferences if you want to. [11]
- The thanks button sometimes didn't work for mobile users. This was because of a new bug and has now been fixed. [12]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 August. It will be on all wikis from 10 August (calendar).
Future changes
- Editors and readers who still use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP will not be able to use Wikipedia. Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP can't connect securely to the wikis. When we allow them to do so it means that we get less security for everyone else. If you use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP you can install Firefox 52 ESR instead. Around 0.1% of the traffic to the Wikimedia wikis comes from Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP. [13]
- Links to sections on Wikipedia don't work well in languages that don't use the Latin script. The URL in the address bar in your browser shows Latin characters like
.D0.A1.D1.81.D1.8B.D0.BB.D0.BA.D0.B8
instead of the section heading in the wiki's language. Links to sections in non-Latin scripts will be in the script of that wiki in the future. This will happen in the next few months. [14][15] - Wiki pages printed by the web browser "Print" function will have an updated style. This new style will be similar to the when you download a page as PDF. It will be better at showing tables, infoboxes and headings. [16][17]

Facto Post – Issue 3 – 11 August 2017
Wikimania report
Interviewed by Facto Post at the hackathon, Lydia Pintscher of Wikidata said that the most significant recent development is that Wikidata now accounts for one third of Wikimedia edits. And the essential growth of human editing.
Impressive development work on Internet-in-a-Box featured in the WikiMedFoundation annual conference on Thursday. Hardware is Raspberry Pi, running Linux and the Kiwix browser. It can operate as a wifi hotspot and support a local intranet in parts of the world lacking phone signal. The medical use case is for those delivering care, who have smartphones but have to function in clinics in just such areas with few reference resources. Wikipedia medical content can be served to their phones, and power supplied by standard lithium battery packages.
Yesterday Katherine Maher unveiled the draft Wikimedia 2030 strategy, featuring a picturesque metaphor, "roads, bridges and villages". Here "bridges" could do with illustration. Perhaps it stands for engineering round or over the obstacles to progress down the obvious highways. Internet-in-a-Box would then do fine as an example.
"Bridging the gap" explains a take on that same metaphor, with its human component. If you are at Wikimania, come talk to WikiFactMine at its stall in the Community Village, just by the 3D-printed display for Bassel Khartabil; come hear T Arrow talk at 3 pm today in Drummond West, Level 3.

Recent changes
- Bureaucrats can now set users as confirmed. Previously only stewards could do this on most wikis. Nothing will change for wikis that have previously decided to let administrators set users as confirmed. [18]
Problems
- The symbols in the language list that show that an article is good or featured in that language doesn't work. Links to the Commons category in the sidebar doesn't work either. The developers are working on fixing it. [19][20]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 August. It will be on all wikis from 17 August (calendar).

- It's in the right place, as can be seen in the article. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:17, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
