 Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at firstโ€”it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.

No original research

I reverted your (good faith) addition (, probably as a substitute for papyrus which was then becoming less easily available, due to the increasing rivalry between the growing Library of Pergamum and the Library of Alexandria in Egypt, which had the monopoly over the distribution of papyrus) to the article "Parchment" because the source cited (https://www.etymonline.com/word/parchment) says no such thingย โ€“ it was only valid for the original, unmodified, statement. Of course you may well be right (indeed you probably are right) but that addition would need its own citation. Our policy wikipedia:no original research says that we cannot include our own research, that any significant contribution must be supported by citing a wikipedia:reliable source that says so. So if you can identify a suitable citation to go with it then of course you may reinstate it. If you need any help, just reply to this message.

Welcome again to Wikipedia. --๐•๐•„๐”ฝ (talk) 11:59, 19 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I added the sources, the name of the king, and the exact year of the embargo. It's a well-known historical rivalry, I'm surprised you didn't know it. Poppins Potter (talk) 15:56, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
We are writing for people who are assumed not to know (otherwise why would they be reading it?). We require citations for at least two good reasons: first, that it shows that it is not someone's personal pseudo-science conspiracy theory or simply an erroneous "stands to reason"; and second that it gives readers a place to start should they want to dive into the detail. For everyone else, the mere existence of citations inspires confidence that our article is reasonably credible (even though we say wp:Wikipedia is not a reliable source).
So thank you for having added those citations. Please continue to review and improve articles in your sphere of interest, in time add new articles where a topic is inadequately covered. Again, welcome. --๐•๐•„๐”ฝ (talk) 16:20, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
