Rethatable fair use File:FrankieJonas.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:FrankieJonas.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. Hi Geraldo Perez -- thanks for walking with me here. I've been editing Wikipedia for more than a decade but have never uploaded a photo because some of the regulations around them. I firmly believe Frankie, who's now 19, deserves an image that doesn't depict him as a 10 year old, so any help you could be in making that happen's appreciated =] Powerrranger (talk) 19:44, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

It would be nice to have a more recent photo but at least we have one. Sometimes it is very hard to get an infobox image for bio articles because of the restriction they must be free-use licensed so this is a problem for a lot of articles. There may be free-use images of him with his brothers that can be cropped to show him. Sometimes there are YouTube videos that are released free-use that we could grab a screen cap from. Jonas hasn't been too active recently so a picture of what he looked like when he was most active is somewhat appropriate but I agree a new one would be better. Frankie Jonas is far more active today than 9 years ago. He's also an adult today, so I actually believe no image is better than depicting him as a 10 year old. Are all YouTube videos free use? Geraldo Perez thank you for educating me about image uploading processes. Objectively I have much more experience as a text editor than an image editor. It is not reflected in the article yet that he is more active as far as I can see. I am loath to remove a free-use image, even if old, as they are so hard to get sometimes. As for YouTube videos, most are not free-use but those that are will have an explicit notice as part of the description releasing them usually under a Creative Commons license where they give permission that permits it. Need to look for that. Getty Images will not give permission for free-use. They sell images and permit some to be used for free for editorial purposes only, they won't permit derivative use which is one of the key things we require for an image to be free-use. Adding images appears to be much more complicated than adding text. Any advice on how to get a free use image for the Ava Max page? She's a beautiful woman and that's an unflattering picture.. Powerrranger (talk) 23:13, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Search C:Commons for other images that may exist. Commons only accepts free-use images so anything found there is likely OK. If you can, take a picture with your own camera and donate to Commons. Other than that watch for fan images that may be properly licensed or the photographer may be willing to donate. We don't have the same problem with text as most of what is added to wikipedia is donated by the editors adding it. If we want to use other peoples words from other sources we have the same problems we have with images. Geraldo Perez (talk) 01:01, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

I see nothing at that link the identified the photographer or makes any statement about releasing it with a license that permits free use. Photographs are presumed copyrighted with restrictions on use absent any statement by the copyright owner, the photographer usually, that give permission on usage. I will take this "does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date" quite literally because there are several mainstream articles discussing a conflict of interest between other editors who edit that Pete Buttigieg page, whereas my edits only promote neutrality.
