Gayathri Girish
editHi there, though I understand you were trying to improve the Gayathri Girish article, the current version reads a bit like an advertisement, since we've installed some questionable non-neutral language, like describing her work as "interesting", or using other words like "popular", "able guidance", "household name", "mammoth project", "delighted...the audience", etc. And, where the previous article had 11 inline citations, the current version has zero, which is problematic, as biographies of living people need to be impeccably sourced. It's likely I will move the article to draft space if these issues can't be resolved quickly. Thank you. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:07, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi there, thank you for your comment, after which I have worked on the article substantially and removed the advertisement-type references and adjectives to describe the work of the person. I also noticed that you have helped improve the article for which I am grateful. Would you please remove the 'advertisement' template which you have inserted on the page? As I mentioned to you - the points that you have raised above have been addressed. Pls advise. Pratima.lakshmanan (talk) 16:06, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi there, thanks for your observations on the 'awards and recognition' segment - I have changed the style to sentence case (removed the CAPS). I have also significantly pruned the artist's awards. Pls would you remove the template inserted at that location? Also, thanks for removing the 'advertisement' template. What more do I need to do in order to make it 'encyclopedic'? I see that template at the top as well. On the matter of references, I have only shown authentic, notable and independent sites as reference points. I wonder why the page still cites some of the references as being bad. Pls advise. Thanks for all your help. Pratima.lakshmanan (talk) 06:31, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
Also, I see you have removed the Youtube link to the concert mentioned. The link is of a channel owned by a company that specialises in creating and disseminating Carnatic content, called Sanskriti series. Notable and verified. Is this suitable for the wiki page? If so, please would you undo that edit? Thanks. Pratima.lakshmanan (talk) 06:37, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Re: Gayathri Girish
editThank you for the talk page message. A few more things to note about Wikipedia policy - you have added some references which is generally a good step, however you will want to review the reliable sources guideline as blogs and certain other types of websites may be problematic as Wikipedia sources. Also you indicated you are editing at the subject's request, therefore Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline will affect your edits - please read that guideline, and some of the other information that follows in the next section: Dl2000 (talk) 20:46, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the detailed information you provided. I found them very useful. I have the following questions however and would be grateful for your advise.
1. I don't see the CoI as a deal-breaker - I am actually only reporting the facts of her career and publications and am quite happy to send the edits to you for your views before publication, so that we can remove any promotional wordings from the document. 2. I see that facebook and blogs are not considered to be authentic sources of reference. However with the subject being an artiste, there is so much verifiable content placed on FB, youtube, people's blogs and reviews of her works and her music albums available at various sites either to download or for sale. So how do I go ahead and publish her list of albums /discography - which is basically her authentic, recorded and publicly available set of recorded songs? I can add references and citations to sources such as jiosaavn or youtube where those songs/concerts are hosted, but would that be acceptable? 3. For some of the independent research work done by the subject, there are no supporting articles appearing in other pages/verifiable sources - I have added references to some of the conferences she has attended. So is it okay for me to state the bare facts of the research work that has been done? This is like a rare genre where research done by musicians need not necessarily appear in a journal but are more likely to be sung/presented to the audience at large. 4. I have personally checked out the links that I have cited as references. Other than one FB post by a prominent actor that details one of her concerts, I don't see any others as being unreliable or non-credible. I would however, like your take on those, so I can remove the ones that do not conform. Thanks so much for all your time and help.Pratima.lakshmanan (talk) 06:03, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
- (1) If the conflict of interest is not a deal-breaker for you, simply add a statement about your connection with your subject to your user page.
- (2 & 3) Independent, professional reviews or other in-depth coverage published by reliable outfits are what gets counted towards notability. If you can't find anything like that, don't put it into the article.
- (4) If someone disagrees with you about the suitability of a source, the place to discuss that is on the talk page of the article in question, not in a {{help me}} request. Engage with the other editor there and try to reach a consensus on what can be included and what can't.
- In summary, it looks like you've more damaged the article than improved it. While I don't consider draftifying the article to be an option, it is likely that it will be restored to an earlier version, before your attempts at improving it, or, possibly, will be nominated for deletion because it's clear that sources establishing notability can't be found. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 06:43, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
Image
editHi there, re: this image, can you please explain where it comes from? I'm trying to ascertain whether the copyright status has been properly identified. Thank you, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 21:45, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi there, re your question on the copyright for the image used for Ms.Gayathri Girish, I got it directly from her. She is a performing artiste and this is from her personal collection of photos. How do I go about the copyright aspect of it? Pls advise. Pratima.lakshmanan (talk) 05:39, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
- Well typically the person who takes a photo is its copyright holder, so that would likely mean that Girish is not the copyright holder, and it would suggest that you are not the copyright holder either. Part of the concern is that since you have claimed to be the copyright holder, and have also released the image into the Creative Commons, you are saying that people are free to use and adapt that image. So the person who took the photo (or their descendents) could conceivably be losing future money and the rights to their creative work could be diluted as a result of an incorrect copyright claim. So as a practical matter, I'm going to nominate the photo for deletion until a more suitably licensed photo can be provided. There are ways to incorporate low-res copyrighted photos under Fair Use claim, but the rules are kind of strict and I'm not an expert. See WP:NFCC. Also, if you wanted to take a photo yourself and upload that as your own work, that would be fine. Copyright laws and our copyright policies can be a bit tricky. I personally get really nervous when doing anything related to image uploads and that sort of thing. Regards, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 22:11, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi there, thanks so much for responding in detail about the copyright issues. In this specific case, the copyright to this photo belongs to the subject herself (since the photo was taken by a family member). How do I attribute copyright here so that I can avoid it from being deleted? Thanks again for the help.Pratima.lakshmanan (talk) 05:40, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
AfC notification: Draft:Gayathri Girish has a new comment
editThank you for your observation. She has received state-level and national-level award. She is a recognised and well-respected Carnatic Musician as is evidenced by the number of reputed articles that have featured her in print as well as virtual. I believe she does meet the criteria. Her page already existed - was woefully inadequate though. So I thought I would add some details to it - based on notable citations. I do hope this answers your query. Thank you for your time and efforts. I sincerely appreciate it. Pratima.lakshmanan (talk) 18:13, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

Thanks so much for having taken the time to review the draft. I do apologise for the confusion. The fact is that I started editing the Gayathri Girish page and was asked by other administrators to review the content that I was adding to the page. Hence I though it best to create all the edits on the sandbox page, get it reviewed by experienced admins as and then post the update to the actual page. I shall move this draft to the actual subject page and submit this draft for deletion. Thanks for providing me the guidance I very much needed. Pratima.lakshmanan (talk) 18:16, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
