Proposed deletion of Gun trust
editThe article Gun trust has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Mostly an advertisement and coatrack for ad links. Subject is already covered at National_Firearms_Act#NFA_Trust. COI issues being discussed at WP:COIN.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Brianhe (talk) 02:49, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
Conflict of interest in Wikipedia
editHi RawrRawringtonIII I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia. Your edits to date are all about gun trusts, and the work you have done is cited mostly to
- secureguntrust.com which sells gun trusts and is run by a NY lawyer
- 2atrusts.com which is connected to Alder Law Group, which sells gun trusts.
- GunTrustLawyer.com which is run by an attorney in Florida selling gun trusts.
- guntrustdepot.com which is a site out of Utah that sells gun trusts.
I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.
Hello, RawrRawringtonIII. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, please:
- avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your circle, your organization, its competitors, projects or products;
- instead propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
- when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you.
Comments and requests
editWikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest;; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).
Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. While I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by our WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with any of the attorneys or groups running the websites you have cited, or PR firms working for them? You can answer how ever you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, with please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), perhaps we can talk a bit about editing Wikipedia, to give you some more orientation to how this place works. Please reply here - I am watching this page. Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 03:23, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
- Hey Jytdog, I do work with an attorney, and was trying to clean up a bit of the gun trust wiki, which as you mentioned for the proposed deletion, was being used extensively for advertising. When I started editing it, it was all external links to secureguntrust.com. I'd also like to point out another editor that you can probably add to Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard who goes by fullautogunguy (Contributions:fullautogunguy). I reverted changes for this editor a few times, and his contributions only show gun trust edits. I'll avoid editing COI articles on wikipedia, and follow the wikipedia guidelines. I didn't realize when I started that it was an issue. Apologies and sincerely, RawrRawringtonIII 17:46, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
- That's awesome thanks! I know attorneys think about things like COI in their legal work, but folks aren't always sensitive to that analysis when they come here. I appreciate your gracious response, and will check out that other editor. (by the way, Wikipedia is so big, that there is no one who doesn't have some COI, somewhere in Wikipedia. And it just human nature that people come edit first in areas where they have the COI kind of "interests". I do hope you stick around and think about working on topics where you have no COI but are interested. And you are welcome to contribute to articles where you do have a COI - we just ask you to declare your COI, and offer suggestions on the Talk page for review by unconflicted editors, instead of changing the article directly. Anyway, thanks again! Jytdog (talk) 00:40, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
