Copywrite

edit

Author is the copywrite holder of entire site www.ycpd.org/http://www.ycpd.org/index.cfm?navid=1023.

  • Since the site is the site of a police department, for you to represent the department's copyright ownership of the text, am I correct in assuming that you are the Chief of Police? If not, then what is your official capacity in (or relationship to) the department? Thank you. SWAdair | Talk 08:41, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Yes sir - I am the Chief of Police for the Yuba City Police Department.

  • Excellent! That makes things so much easier. In the crazy world of the internet, it can sometimes be difficult to prove one's identity. This should be easy, though. If you will e-mail me (SWAdair@computermail.net) from rdoscher@yubacity.net then I will consider that proof of identity and remove this article's listing as a possible copyright infringement. When you've sent the e-mail, let me know either here or on my talk page so I can log in to check e-mail. Thank you. SWAdair | Talk 09:00, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The e-mail has been submitted sir.

  • The e-mail checks out.  :-) Welcome to Wikipedia, sir. SWAdair | Talk 09:12, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The article author contacted me by e-mail (e-mail matching that listed as belonging to the Chief of Police for the Yuba City Police Department), verifying that he was the author of the article. I have removed the copyvio tag from the article and removed the listing at Wikipedia:Copyright problems. SWAdair | Talk 09:12, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for your advice.

Information

edit

Thank you for your feedback on the entry. The copywright on the Police Department website was requested by me in order to control distribution of material. The government code in CA views Police Chiefs differently from other governmental appointees in that the Chief is solely responsible for all aspects of the department until they resign, retire or are removed from office. While it's rare, the PD holds the copywrite for the website and its contents, much the same as the Los Angeles Police Department retains control over various use of its name and/or symbols. Such authority is vested in the chief. The Yuba City Police Department is recognized as one of the most tech advanced agencies of its size in the U.S. We often host visitors from agencies throughout the U.S. and abroad. We are the only municipal police agency in the nation to have gained clearance from the U.S. National Security Agency to act as an area hub for the receipt and dissemination of classified Homeland Security data. While listing in Wikipedia assists significantly in allowing a resource for interested parties to gain detailed background data prior to interviews on tech/or Homeland Security topics, I am very willing to be guided by your decisions. If the article is delated, I appreciate the venue as it has helped our agency since its initial posting. Thank you for allowing me to clarify some details. Rdoscherca 20:46, 28 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • I think I've established that I am the sole authority entitled to exercise the rights US law grants to the "author" of the copyright-protected page that is the source. I have knowingly placed it under GDFL, so treating it as a "copyvio" here and on the VfD sub-page is unjustified in my opinion. Respectfully, how do we get back on track? Thanks.Rdoscherca 01:16, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Hi Rick. In the copywrite hold disussion, you indicated that you would like to see the webmaster wave copywrite on the article. I am the webmaster for the site. I took the PD site on as a project in 1995 and stayed with it ever since. Thanks Rick.Rdoscherca 19:05, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Resumption of VfD process, with VfD notice in place

edit

Removal of the VfD notice on this talk page's article is a violation of good order and policy. Don't anyone do it again until an admin has declared the result of this VfD process and closed discussion. (I can't take time to link to the appropriate policies any time soon; perhaps a helpful colleague will add that into to this page.)
