Ian Fleming image

Hi, I noticed you uploaded Image:Ian Fleming.jpg in 2004 and I'm wondering if you can perhaps give me an idea of where you might have gotten it so that I can add rationale for it. I added the image to Thunderball (a long time ago) because a good portion of the article discusses a lawsuit involving Fleming; however, because Thunderball is on FAC, some editors are requesting that we require rationale for all images used. I believe this image is fair-to-use, but am not sure of the source and therefore not entirely sure how to claim why it is fairuse. It may be public domain, I honestly don't know. This whole "rationale" business is all new to me so I really don't know what to write for this instance. Any help you may be able to give to me would be much appreciated though. avoid passive voice on ITN

Hello, Rdsmith4. Just saw the edit summary to your latest edit on ITN.... I usually try to avoid passive voice, too, but I thought we should also avoid Bush. Everytime he shows up on the MainPage, his page gets vandalized very often. And the page already gets vandalized quite often to start with ..... Congratulations on being made a bureaucrat! I thought you might like to know of a javascript tool that may help in your editing by giving easy access to many admin features. It's described at Wikipedia:Tools#Navigation_popups. The quick version of the installation procedure for admins is paste the following into User:Rdsmith4/Archive 7/monobook.js:

I look it up here. It's not 100%, but it helps. Probable open proxies are listed in red, but so are IPs that are just dynamic, so be careful before permablocking. Enter this latest vandal's IP, and you'll see what it looks like. Joyous (talk) 03:11, September 10, 2005 (UTC)

I wanted to inform you that I have not, in fact, vandalized any pages. I have not even changed a single letter of any single page. What I have done is clicked on a couple of the links that said "edit" out of curiosity. Once I saw that all the article text was actually editable, I used my back arrow to avoid making any changes. I was merely investigating how the site works, in case I do feel the need to make alterations to an article in the future. I can understand your desire to protect valuable site content from vandalism and I can assure you that I appreciate the veracity of the articles.

Revert on [Ray Nagin]

You probably didn't mean to do it but you reverted the Ray Nagin article to the version that claims that Blanco sent out a press release asking for a state of emergency to be declared instead of contacting the Whitehouse to ask them to declare the emergency. This is not merely POV it is total lunacy. The individual who has been peddling this and other theories has reverted the article 9 NINE times in the past 24 hours. Your early pulling of RfA

I saw your early pulling of my RfA, and I do not pretend that I would have an easy time dealing with this situation if I were in your position.

Normally, I follow concensus, and please note that I am a user in good standing, maybe not as "experienced" as some, but in good standing: Look at my block logs:

Since the policy, as applied, allows any user in good standing to be admin, I have notified Jimbo of the lack of compliance with policy: Mob Rule is fun -but it rarely ever works.

The "ill will" factor, while not significant in my honest opinion, has not diminished by the pulling of my nomination; I would ask that you repost my nomination and let it run its course --giving me about 2-3 extra days to make up for what you've done in the early pulling, but, if you want to wait and talk to Jimbo first, that is alright.

PS: Please read the RfA page from beginning to end before you suppose to do anything: You will find that the situation is not what you think, and I suggest your reading it so that when Jimbo asks you about it, there won't be any surprises.

Regarding the above, I saw that you withdrew the nomination because it had no chance of succeeding. However, Gordon and others continued posting to the page, which was becoming somewhat toxic as a result. He also lodged an appeal with Jimbo [1] and tried to have the story of his RfA written up for Signpost. [2] I've therefore put a note at the top of the page saying the vote has closed, and I added his name to the failed nomination page. I also asked him to stop posting to the voting page, but he continued, so I protected it. If I've done the wrong thing there, I'm sorry, and obviously feel free to undo it. It's a school IP (i.e. shared between a large number of students), and the last spate of vandalism was from the beginning of this year; the recent vandalism didn't continue after the first warning. I'm not sure this requires further action. --fvw* 21:08, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

I accept your offer here (Revision as of 15:09, 15 September 2005) to reopen my RfA.

At the RfA main page and the subpage for my RfA here, I've reopened the nomination and adjusted the time as it seems appropriate.

Since this is a contentious RfA, let me clarify some things for critics of your offer and my decision to accept it:

1) If any ill will is felt by those voting, then they don't need to be at Wikipedia: The voting is voluntary: Anyone that doesn't feel welcome should simply go to another page: Unless someone has something to hide, the RfA should proceed to completion, which looks to be about the 23rd of this month: After all, if 25-30 users may be offended by something they voluntarily log on to and review, this is not relevant to the tens of thousands of Wikipedians who might be affected if there is any merits to my concerns raised in this RfA.

2) The concerns about Wikipedia's image are not founded -unless there really is a widespread problem of people not following policy. (In that case, it could be very' embarrassing, but rather "cathartic."

3) However, if there is merit to my claims of failure to follow policy, then my RfA is needed to bring this to other's attention. This is best done by letting it go to completion.

People have acted very immaturely over this, and they just need to butt out, and let the process work its way to completion; this, after all, is just wiki -however, this immature attitude is something that can offend and alienate a great many other users, who are promised that policy will be upheld, but, instead, find little "cliques" of the "inside crowd," and many current admins have argued vigorously just as much as I have, but they criticize me for this, because there is a "Double standard," and this mistreatment of the lower caste must stop.

Accordingly, now I have two goals, not just one with my request for adminship: 1) Promotion if I get enough valid votes; and, 2) Enforcement of policy (or change of it) --or discipline if actors would refuse to comply with our current policies in RfA or whatever: For, these type of actions are why a good many users are quitting Wikipedia, and leaving with hard feelings.

We can do better.

We should do better.

We will do better.

Hello! I've just received a plea from a would-be user (at User talk:Mel Etitis#My Real Name Stolen, Used for Harassment/Stupidity). He says that his name has been used by a vandal sock-puppet, whose account – User:John Henry DeJong – was permanently blocked; he'd like to edit, and wants to use the account name. Curps suggested that I contact a bureaucrat: "They have the technical ability to change the username of the vandal to something like John_Henry_DeJong_impostor and free up the username for you (as long as the current registrant of the username used it only for vandalism, I believe they would authorize this)." 2005 USA Grand Prix

Here is the answer to the 2005-USA GP. The formula1.com is incorrect as listing as ret instead of DNS. This were the responses from the following people. Renowned F1 statistians, like David Hayhoe or Autosport's Peter Higham agree that all Michelin drivers were DNS in 2005-USA, but consider a RET if a driver didn't made a re-start, for example. That was the common view in the past - no contemporary source listed Lauda as a DNS in 1976-Germany - and they simply ignore the current "null and void" FIA rule. Button will start his 100th race start in the 2005-China race. But according to wikipedia when doing the math by adding all Button race starts it would be his 101st race start in China as Button has been listed as Ret instead of DNS for this year 2005-USA race. Does this make sense to you. That means wikipedia will have for all the drivers who have no started in the 2005 USA have an extra race start which wouldn't be official to the drivers stats. Actually, my guess is that SeanMack created User talk:Rdsmith4/me, probably by accident, when he posted his 8/11/2005 comment (praising you). How that might cause a redirect from your Talk page, if that is indeed what happened, is beyond my technical competence. Chicago area meetup

I've finally decided on a place for the first Wikipedia meetup in Chicago: 2 p.m. at Saturday, October 15th at Cafe Iberico, a tapas bar in the River North neighborhood of Chicago at 739 N. La Salle Drive. They have parking available and are 0.3 mile from the Chicago stop of the CTA Red Line. See their website for parking information; for transit planning use the RTA trip planner with a destination address of "739 N. La Salle Dr." Cafe Iberico has vegetarian selections for those who are so inclined (sorry, they're not very vegan-friendly, I'm afraid). The food is excellent and the environment very suitable for an informal gathering. Do check their webpage for any additional questions, or ask me. They typically cost typically costs between $10 and $15 per person; I'm willing to cover for anyone for whom this is too much (as long as we don't get too many people).

Please let me know before Saturday, October 8th (by email or on my talk page) if you're planning on coming so I can make the appropriate reservations. See you there! Rich Cabins

Thannk you for your message. My reason for deletion was indeed based mostly on notability (which, though not specifically a deletion criterion, is sometimes covered, more on that later), after a kind. From what I can tell, Rich Cabins Camp is just that: a campsite. Surely it is an interesting campsite to those who visit it, but it is a campsite. This, to me, is as reasonable an article as on my house, where nothing notable in the sense of events the world at large would be interested in has occured. It is verifiable. It exists. I can provide sources, census information, and photographs proving its location. But Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. Likewise, a campsite unwarranted by anything other that having people stay there does not warrant an encyclopedia article, in my humble opinion. I could be wrong.

Notability is sometimes covered somewhere in WP:NOT, as in this case. It is also sometimes covered by WP:V. I personally believe that notability is a quality of encyclopedic content, and I am also a deletionist, for much the same reasons that Geogre is. It's just a different way of looking at things. I can understand why some people are inclusionists, I just kindly beg to differ.

I hereby recant my assertion that those camps are unverifiable. From what I gleaned out of the article, and from some quick searches, I concluded that the chances of someone verifying it were unlikely, and used that as shorthand. I'm sorry for any confusion. I wouldn't be opposed to any information that's worth keeping being merged into Philmont Scout Ranch, if that's the concensus. Me, I still don't see how it warrants an article. Maybe I'm just too stubborn :)? By all means, go ahead and create a list of them if you so choose.
