Blue Ribbon campaign (Fiji)

edit

Hi there! I suppose that it was laziness on my part that led me to just hit the "revert" button rather than tweak your edit. You had the word "coup" in twice, and I apologize that I was too lazy to fix it properly. But if you look at my "coding," you'll notice that it's what we call a "piped link": one that leads to the correct article, even though the words used are different. Such [[Article name|piped links]] are very common on Wikipedia, and very useful. David Cannon 09:40, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

By the way, you're obviously interested in Fiji. That's very good news to me, and to Wikipedia, as I've had hardly anybody working with me over the last 18 months. If you have material to contribute pertaining to Fiji, that would be wonderful! David Cannon 09:42, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Wong Jack Man article

edit

(From Talk:Bruce_Lee) I've wanted to read that Chinese Pacific Weekly article for a long time, and you're the first person I know of who has seen it. Could you possibly get a digital copy of it? I could probably do a translation of it for interested readers. Shawnc 14:49, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the efforts. Hopefully the article will turn up somehow. Shawnc 01:23, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dear Shawnc: Any luck finding Wong Jack Man article in Pacific Weekly? There are so many people that even doubt it's existence. How can it be proven that the article is real? Isn't there any place I could view the actual front page? 9/21/06

Dennis Brown

edit

I had no idea about his alleged coke use until it came up at work yesterday when Dennis Brown came across our desktops [1] and my colleague (whom I find reliable and who lived for years in California) suddenly mentioned that Brown had been a crack addict, that he was definitely a smoker rather than a user of powder, and that my colleague had met him when Brown was in California, which is how he had himself found all this out. Obviously this kind of original research has no place in wikipedia but it got me searching, and when I discovered sourceable material confirming this I had no hesitation in using it. My colleague confirmed that rumours abound that Gregory Isaacs and other Jamaican reggae artists were also using coke but that Dennis Brown was the person he had seen in the flesh. I aded some stuff at Culture (band) and Joseph Hill as well, and Hill, one of the very few to confront this issue, echoed my own feelings that cocaine/crack is ruining our peace of mind as individuals and societies. Wikipedia's insistence on citations is indeed an inherent systemic bias in favoutr of literate societies which biases against third world societies amongst others, and as I am very much rooted here in the Third World right now this type of systemic bias is an issue of concern in my work here. Wikiproject: countering systemic bias

edit

Hi Reggaedelgado, I wonder if you might be able to help - I'm writing an article for openDemocracy about the Wikiproject:countering systemic bias. I'd like to get some quotes from Wikipedians about why they're involved, what they're working on and some other general issues. I wonder if you'd be willing to talk to me over email? Mine is

Thanks,

The E-40 site

edit

Who is this person writing so much garbage about the man? There's so much to be said, and so little of it has to do with the so-called "controvesy"? I guess with the good (Bay gettin out there), comes the bad (Hating on 40 for rapping abour muscle cars???). I'm somewhat new to wikipedia, how do disagreements like this normally get settled? -- Carlos 15:50, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, as far as I have noticed, wikipedia has disagreements like this all the time. Usually they involve someone determined to put their point of view in an article, not realizing that it is a point of view and not clear cut fact. They usually rely on "sources" that are of very little reliability or can be interpretted many ways. Occasionally, like this time, they also involve people who see some sort of conspiracy (GMC/Yahoo pushing e-40). The good news is that usually the person with the POV is not especially committed to wikipedia and loses interest and goes away, especially when there are multiple people opposing their changes. There are other official wikipedia methods as well (see WP:DR, but I have never been involved in any of them—I usually just try to be calm and detatched... it usually bores the other person into leaving or gets them to understand a bit better what is going on in the wikipedia. I'm sorta surprised that 40 has attracted this attention, but I'm glad people give a crap about the bay. It's also nice to have you here on the site helping describe our baysiness.... yadadadadadingdong? Reggaedelgado 16:10, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Haha, good look man. That's funny. -- Carlos 01:32, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your thoughtful and diligent editing of articles that attract unhelpful contributions, like those on street gangs and Pomona College. Your help is appreciated. Cheers, -Will Beback 18:54, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
