Hi. The basic guideline is WP:BOLD. Pretty common-sense if you're considerate and polite, which you appear to be. You should have gotten notices that your edits were reverted. (Little red square at the top of your page.)

As for this particular issue, it's been discussed, and consensus is that we should use "Oriya", because that's the common form in English. Official declarations by governments aren't particularly relevant. If common usage follows government diktat some day, then we'll reconsider. Think how many years the capital of China continued to be spelled "Peking" despite the Chinese govt settling on "Beijing". Or the fact that we still use "Burma" rather than "Myanmar". Or what would happen if India decided that from now on it should be called "Bharat". Hardly anyone outside India would know what that was, so most news reports etc. would continue to call it "India", and so would we. Changing established names on a whim, official or not, causes confusion, but once the majority of reliable sources change to the new form, so people have become used to it, we follow their lead. Thanks for responding. I am not sure I have figured out the correct way to reply to messages yet. But hopefully this will get posted. I have not got any notice or anything. Your message was the first I received. The point you provided makes it even more confusing since the change was for both the name of the state (from Orissa to Odisha) as well as the language (from Oriya to Odia). This was to keep it more in sync with the way it is actually pronounced in any of the Indian languages. I see Odisha present on all wiki links for the state name (like you mentioned) but language is present as Oriya with a tag officially spelled as Odia. It's not just officially spelled as Odia, it's spoken as Odia as well. And it had always been spoken that way even when the name was officially written as Oriya. And regarding the usage, I don't see where that is coming from. Any new books, magazines, etc. printed now has it as "Odia". Why should the same not be corrected in Wiki articles? - Remoonline (talk) 21:03, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
