Derivative highways

edit

The definition in the category of derivative highways does not state that it includes highways that closely follow the same route of another highway, like the one's you listed. -- Earl Andrew - talk 01:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's not what the defintion states though. From what I gather, it generally means if a highway number comes from another highway number. i.e., it derives from it. -- Earl Andrew - talk 01:51, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, I'm not confident on whether or not the definition listed is the actual definition for derivative highways, but as it stands, it does not mention anything about highways that have similar paths to others. -- Earl Andrew - talk 01:55, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you're certain that's what the actual defenition pertains to. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:01, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Global highway

edit

I guess my issue with the article is that it's too broad in scope, too vague about details, and fails to cite credible sources. When I read the article, I get the sense that there's never been any serious discussion about a proposal to link all the continents, and that the article is pure speculation. While I doubt the subject is worthy of an article, I would suggest splitting it into sections discussing each individual place where a fixed link has been built, or is proposed, with focus on logistics and the likelyhood of each. I would add sections on the 2 existing long distance Danish bridges, the Fehmarn Belt bridge, the Sicilian bridge, King Fahd Causeway, Qatar–Bahrain Friendship Bridge, Alaska highway (and proposals to link Nome by road), Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the Java-Sumatra link proposals, and other relevant fixed links and proposals in addition to those already mentioned in the article. Finally, the article as it now stands needs to be cleaned up to have a more formal style, and corrected for spelling and grammar. Cheers. --Alcuin 21:42, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wow, you've done a lot in such a short amount of time. Looks great, but be careful with accuracy (the Fehmarn Bridge isn't built yet). I think that Cosmopolitan Railway should perhaps be merged into Global highway since they are conceptually similar (it was the predominant technology, not the idea that changed). Plus, since the proponent of the railway was a US governor, it would lend more notability to the idea of a global transportation network. Anyway, nice work, and I plan to help expand it soon. I like the way you've got it shaping up. It'll be a nice jumping off point to articles about recent and future engineering marvels. --Alcuin 00:41, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hilton Windsor

edit

I have proposed this article for deletion; I also proposed the article on the Radisson for deletion, and (if you are interested) the entire category on "Churches in Windsor" and its contents. And a student organization and the student newspaper, which should be covered in the university article. I think these all fail to meet WP:Notability and also are basically directory entries, which Wikipedia is specifically not. If you disagree, please feel free to remove the "prod" tags and improve the articles to help show notability, or else argue on the talk pages that they are fine the way they are. --Brianyoumans 02:23, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • How do you feel about the Radisson? If you want to keep that one too, I will AFD them both. If not, I can run the Hilton by itself. BTW: If you look at the Hilton Hotels article, you will see that there are very few "notable" Hiltons listed there. Do you really think the Windsor Hilton is that notable? One Hilton is kind of like another, mostly, I think. Brianyoumans 03:03, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

List of United States over-the-air television networks

edit

I pulled the Spanish-language and Bloomberg listings from the tables, as they are not broadcast networks in the U.S. If they do have terrestrial affiliates, we can put them back up, and note as such, but to have them listed with blanks in the number of stations column is not a good thing, given the nature (and sheer size) of this list. --Mhking 18:49, 2 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's cool - sounds good. I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, just trying to keep the thing from becoming even more unwieldly than it already is...--Mhking 18:54, 2 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Following on, it looks like HITN is only on cable and satellite (they note this on their site at http://www.hitn.org/getting_hitn_en.php ). I don't see Bloomberg on the page you note, and at first glance, it doesn't look like HTV notes any local channels on their website (with my pidgin Spanish). --Mhking 01:45, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Edmonton Tornado

edit

Sorry to take so long to answer your message. I've had to remove the Edmonton tornado, mainly because the tornado did not directly cause damage to the downtown core. While the twister came no closer than about 5 km from downtown, this is still quite a distance from the east edge of the central business district at 97 Street. And according to the article List of tornadoes striking downtown areas, suburbs do not count even within city limits. The effects of even an F4/F5 tornado is fairly localized even at its peak. The Edmonton Tornado was no different and damage from the tornado was not recorded in the downtown core or even in the suburban areas immediately east of the CBD, so it shouldn't be re-added. The CBD got just heavy rainfall and hail at the time of the tornado and so these are not direct effects of a tornado. NorthernFire 20:28, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: -verts

edit

Sorry for the reverts, but it's mainly to keep things clean. In your listings for US channels in the MTL and Quebec City templates, it's unnecessary, as there are already links to the appropriate US markets. As for digital subchannels -- listing all of them in the infoboxes and the market templates are cumbersome and unwieldly; better off just listing them in the "meat" of the article itself. -- azumanga 05:26, 29 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Categories

edit

Just as a reminder, please don't apply redundant categorization to articles. That is, Category:Ontario county roads is already a subcategory of both Category:Ontario roads and Category:County roads. Category:Ontario roads is already a subcategory of Category:Roads in Canada and Category:Transportation in Ontario, etc. So an Ontario county road should only be filed in Category:Ontario county roads, not in all five of those categories simultaneously. Bearcat 02:09, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

No worries. Looks like a pretty big job you're taking on there. Wowza. (Made a few corrections and changes to the Sudbury list, btw; they're actually designated as Municipal Roads or MRs there, since there's only one municipality and no county.) Bearcat 02:40, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ontario County Roads

edit

I strongly disapprove the fact that you moved the original list of county roads into something like: Essex County, Ontario roads. This is because these county roads DOES NOT belong to the Ontario government (They belong to the counties since the counties pay for the roads' expenses), and should not name under Ontario. The title is misleading. Please further discuss the details of this issue with me.

P.S. I appreciate your enthusiasm of making Wikipedia a better encyclopedia.

Thank you for your reply. And by the way, I typed one word wrong in my last message, and hope you can disregard it. Recently, I am working on all the county roads. How about you?

I also want to discuss with you about starting a WikiProject, (with your strong contribution, of course), and the WikiProject is going to be about writing all articles about county roads (stubs would be fine, we will fix that during the 2nd stage), and also about putting all county roads into a neat and organized format. Are you interested? Please tell me as soon as possible, so I can register/apply to have a new Wikiproject as early as possible.

P.S. If my language is a little bit heavy on the last message, please forgive me for doing so, for I think there is a better way to name all the categories (in a shorter form, but a better way)

I'm not quite sure why you added the communities you did under "Other Major Communities" in this template. When I redesigned it, I went by Statscan reports, and included communities there over 50,000. Otherwise, it just becomes arbitrary. Wikiproject Automobiles Notification

edit

Hi RaccoonFox, you were on the list of members at WikiProject Automobiles and we are introducing a new way of listing members, as the old list was becoming too long. Our new method involves having all of our members in a category.

To add yourself to the category just add the userbox to your user page by putting {{Wiki Auto Project}} where you want the userbox. Alternatively if you don't like the userbox you can add [[Category:WikiProject Automobiles members|RaccoonFox]] to your userpage.

If you no longer wish to be a member of the project, simply don't add the userbox or category, there's no pressure. Thanks for your time, James086Talk | Contribs 04:19, 17 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

TV Templates

edit

First of all -- the main reason I've reversed some of your template changes is that I feel they are unnecessary and superfluous -- they practically add nothing, and some of the added features are unnecessary.

Second -- the new template design interferes with the infoboxes -- they literally overlap them, due to coding. I hope you understand. -- azumanga 04:22, 23 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sonic Movie.

edit

I've noticed that you intend to constantly edit info on a Sonic SatAM movie into the Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) article. Please stop this. You are failing to cite references, and the tone is very gossipy. Though Rich maybe just a multimedia specialist thats done graphic design and directed music videos for local indie bands, his idea of a sonic movie is still possible, but not absolute. Until SEGA announces it, or a popular film resource like Variety makes mention of actual production, it's not welcome in the article.

Further more, Wiki isn't here to spread rumors on movies that aren't even in pre-production. He hasn't even presented the idea in full to SEGA, and the American department. This is not article worthy in any way/shape/form. Please stop posting it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Special:Contributions/farck11 (talk) 00:53, 27 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

You've been adding a bunch of HTML blank lines to pages. HTML should only be used when needed—see WP:MOS—and, in this case, it isn't needed. Just use two blank lines if you want more space between the end of the article and the boxes. --Walor 00:44, 30 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: KTLA logos

edit

I'm just curious as to why you're removing KTLA's icons from the past... they're the legitimate logos from the station, and they are fair-use as they are low-resolution, and do not infringe upon any copyrights, as i've listed the sources for both.

Well, one picture is nothing more than another variation of the 1981 logo, and the other "cable/satellite" logo is one that I'm sure has never been used on the air (and if it has was never widely used). As some admins are looking to purge all "fair-use" images from television station articles, I felt the best way to keep the bloodletting at a minimum would be to remove the redundancy ourselves. Hense, the 1989 picture, which is basically the same from '81, and the cable pic were deleted from the page. Let's keep the pertinent logos in the article, and not two or three versions of the same thing -- even with different backgrounds. Rollosmokes 09:17, 17 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
And, wouldn't ya know? A Man in Black has taken all the images -- including the ones I incoporated into the text itself -- from the article. Here we go again. Rollosmokes 09:19, 17 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding "Communications in St.-Pierre et Miquelon"

edit

According to the WRTH, RFO in St.-Pierre & Miquelon exclusively uses the SECAM-K1 standard like all other French DOM-TOMs. Why they were not allowed to use the SECAM-L standard that Metropolitan France has is beyond me, but since RFO is the only television broadcaster in the whole territory, then why would RFO use PAL, as you placed in the Communications in Saint Pierre and Miquelon article? I am not refusing to listen to anything. The content was taken without my permission, and I am reacting accordingly. Unlike Wikipedia, I take Copyright violations seriously. I am most pleased that you will no longer be visiting the website in the future. I was planning on blocking you from visiting anyways. Your name will be quickly removed, and should the same thing happen again here, I will be more careful with its spelling.--Sonysnob 03:05, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I find that unlikely, as i don't contribute to your website, and i don't take anything from it. you do NOT own a road or information in the public domain. I wonder what type of banning tools you even have, anyway. Now, we can be civil and discuss it on Talk:Highway 401 (Ontario)#Constant_reverting if you wish. Highway 401 (Ontario) multiple reverts

edit

Warning

Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly, as you are doing in Highway 401 (Ontario). If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions in a content dispute within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. Rather than reverting, discuss disputed changes on the talk page. The revision you want is not going to be implemented by edit warring. Thank you. Dl2000 03:25, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Why would I want you to keep visiting? Look at where it has gotten me thus far. You have basically stolen something from my website, and I don't want to happen again. When you research an article, if you are to reproduce something, the reproduction should be unrecognizable from the original. The facts will of course be the same, but the rest should be rewritten from scratch, otherwise you have committed plagiarism. I am aware you added and rearranged some text, however, the bulk of your addition was still copied and pasted from my website, and therefore written by me. Furthermore, while a link was included to the source at the end of the paragraph, it was not properly referenced at the bottom in the references section, as cited text should be.

Herein lies the problem with Wikipedia, it is you who has used content inappropriately from me, and now just to get plagerized material off the internet I have to fight with you, who has has called me a vandal, and screamed harassment, while all the time using childish insults. The insults must stop, or I will be forced to take decisive action on the OntHighways.com website itself.

I trust this will end the dispute.

--Sonysnob 14:26, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

How in the world is something that is publically available from the MTO and re-worded on your website somehow copyright infringement against you? Your website does NOT contain original works, it contains re-worked and (hopefully) cited information from the MTO and other sources. If we use your same argument, I must ask - how dare you infringe on the MTO's copyright! Dude, this information is in the public domain. The protections that allow you to post it on your website also protect other users from posting them on Wikipedia. A reference was made, this is sufficient according to Wikipedia's copyright policy. If you continually revert the 401 page, I trust users other than myself will take whatever action is necessary to prevent your vandalism. Snickerdo 18:10, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think that you get it. I am not plagiarizing anything. I went out took photographs, researched the construction, went to public meetings and did a write up about the status of the construction. I have a sources page on my website, that details where I get information. You are of course allowed to do this as well. What you are not allowed to do is to copy and paste peoples work and call it your own. Yes, I realize that you added words and rearranged some wordings, however, this still constitutes plagiarism. To not plagiarize somebody's work, you need to put the facts read into your own words. This has not been done, as although the text has been altered, it still is not entirely your own words, which again constitutes plagiarism. The solution to this is simple, either directly quote all of the text taken from the website, and reference it PROPERLY, or re-write the article, and again properly reference just the facts. If this were argument were being held in an educational institution not only would you not get credited for your research, but this type of theft would be grounds from dismissal from an post secondary institution. --Sonysnob 19:31, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

That's good and all that you took the photographs. I have not uploaded a single photograph or directly cut-and-paste from your page. We also never said we were plagiarizing as we sourced and REWORDED your information, AS YOU ASKED US TO. i've come to believe you just don't want anything that seems similar to your website to be on wikipedia. If we were to play by your rules, then you would be expelled as well. You dismiss every argument that is not your own. So, basically...anything that seems similar to your website is plagiarism. To be honest, i don't even know what you want. You can claim copyright violation all you want, but it's not a copyright violation. you can point at a chicken and say it's a duck all you want, but that will never make it a duck. RingtailedFoxTalkStalk 20:28, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad to hear you've brought this to arbitration. I think we need to have Sonysnob blocked until the final outcome has been decided, as well. He is clearly violating the warnings given about reverting the page. Snickerdo 20:52, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Copyvio

edit

Since subtlety is apparently lost here:

I am hereby informing you, in my official capacity as an administrator, that, in my judgement, the material in question constitutes a copyright violation. I have therefore removed it from the article. Further, I will enforce this removal by blocking any editor that attempts to reinsert the material or a substantially identical version. Kirill Lokshin 04:36, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

All I want is for you to not add any material that violates someone's copyright. This means that you can't add any text—not even a single sentence—that's copied, word-for-word, from some copyrighted source (unless you're quoting it directly, of course). If you're rewording, you need to do it so properly; simply changing a few words or sentences but leaving chunks of the original text is not sufficient. Kirill Lokshin 04:48, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Please do. The idea is to present the same facts, but to do so in a completely different manner; so don't just settle for changing the wording, but go for more substantial changes (rearranging and restructuring sentences and clauses, etc.) as well. Kirill Lokshin 04:56, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Highway 401 Proposal

edit

Well, the added material is quite nice, but it's not really fixing the core of the problem that well:

In the late Fall of 2005, the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario started a construction project to upgrade the current 4-lane section of Highway 401 from 4- to 6-lanes from west of Oxford County Road 3 to west of Waterloo Regional Road 97 (where the next 6-lane concrete-divded road begins) in the County of Oxford and Regional Municipality of Waterloo.
This is currently part of the last 4-laned section between London and Toronto (stretching from Highway 403 Interchange in Woodstock, Ontario to Waterloo Road 97 in Kitchener, Ontario), but is being upgraded to 6 lanes plus an Ontario tall-wall barrier in the median. This is the first stage of upgrades of this final 4-lane section.
Aside from the addition of one lane per direction and a tall-wall barrier, two emergency onramp accesses that are intended to be used only during emergency highway closures and other such incidents have been constructed. These emergency accesses are the first of their kind on an Ontario freeway, and have been constructed in the vicinity of both Oxford Road 3, and Trussler Road.
Other emergency accesses have been built in Essex County where the road was recently widened from 4 to 6 lanes, but these are gravel, and all are alongside overpasses, for use by ambulances, firetrucks, and police cars in emergencies only.

The idea is to transform the text to the point where the original's wording isn't blatantly recognizable; here, you've still got an entire sentence, and a quite recognizable clause (neither of which are particularly difficult to completely reword). Kirill Lokshin 07:40, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Coincidence at tornado records

edit

I tried to start discussion on the talk page but since you seem to have missed it I'll bring the discussion here. I have several issues with the "Tornado of the Elevens" going on the records page.

  1. I fail to see how a single tornado occurring at a specific date and time is a "spectacular" coincidence. I'm sure if you look hard enough you could find one at 12:34 on 5/6 of one year...it's just not that "spectacular" of an occurrance. Plus, it was 11:11 PM, which is 23:11 in many countries.
  2. Emphasis on the single tornado. While the other note about Codell is extremely rare (even a town being hit 3 times in recorded history is very unusual), this was one tornado which struck at a certain time.
  3. What does the 11:11 mean, anyway? I highly doubt the tornado lasted for less than a minute, so what happened at 11:11? Did it touch down? First start producing damage? Reach the center of town? It just seems very ambiguous to just pull this specific minute out of an event that undoubtedly spanned several minutes.

I'd like to hear back from you so we can come to a comprimise (or understanding) -RunningOnBrains 05:30, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Who Framed Roger Rabbit sectional neutrality

edit

I don't have any problem with the article having an Anachronisms section. The problem is that it isn't written in a neutral point-of-view tone. The general tone of the section indicates commentary rather than objective fact explaining. Wikipedia is not a place for commentary pieces or reviews. Phrases such as "With this in mind, several anachronistic errors are easily spotted." and "The appearance of post-1947 Toons can be explained..." doesn't really allow the viewer to simply look at the facts and decide for themselves why these anachronisms may exist. It isn't the article's purpose to lay out a framework as to the reasons for a movie (or other fictional work) having particular anachronisms. Wording such as "An error that could not be justified..." is a blatant infusion of biased passive-voice wording regarding what the writer thinks is a particular anachronistic error. This isn't the proper way to write such a section and it needs to be cleaned up. Bumm13 03:12, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

RaccoonFox, is that you?

edit

Hi RingtailedFox,

I am Smcafirst, remember me? Your good partner at WP:GHR? Well, while you were not here, we expanded the project quite a lot, and my user account expanded too. Why didn't you tell me when you return to Wikipedia? I would like to invite you back to our WikiProject. And I recruited numerous members, the project grew to about 13 active members, 2 pending members, and 1 inactive member (which is RaccoonFox, maybe you). Please reply at my talk page. I am so glad you are back.

Check my user page, it changed A LOT!

County Road Shields and Welcome back!

edit

Hi RingtailedFox,

Well, while you left, many things happened, it's hard for me to explain everything. It's kind of a long story. First, I was attempting to create those road shields using Arial font (how stupid am I?). Then, I met Ilovevancouver90909, a good helper of mine (I actually met him in real life!), and he taught me how to make those road signs. We then started to create a lot of articles on Roads in Markham, and York Regional Roads, and Simcoe County Roads. Ilovevancouver90909 made the York Regional Road shields (which are way better than mine), and I made some of the Simcoe County Road shield, and I will be restarting them soon.

Later, I met Nhl4hamilton, another good helper, he is so proficient and tireless of making Hamilton-related articles, that I rewarded him a barnstar (and he rewarded me one too), and then we are currently working on expanding the project, and eventually (planned for summer 07), we will include everything in the Golden Horseshoe, everything from roads to communities to landmarks! And planned for winter 08-09, we might expand the project to WikiProject Quebec City-Windsor Corridor, and that will make us very busy!

Then, I met another person (I don't want to type it out, it's very long), and we started the OUTREACH department! We were planning to make newsletter and all kinds of stuff, but we simply have no time at all!

Anyway, welcome back!

Your edit at County Road 8 (Essex County, Ontario)

edit

Hi RingtailedFox,

This reminds me of the old times, when we argue which is the correct title. Well, here it comes again. I think it would be a better title if it is Essex County Road 8, Ontario or simply Essex County Road 8. This would make it more uniform, like I had did with other County/Regional Roads. What do you think?

County/Regional Road Shields

edit

Yea, there is a template that I made that I work with. Just steal one of them and delete the numbers and the region/county name. Remember that the road shields have the word COUNTY/REGION at the TOP and the county/region name on the BOTTOM. Don't ask me why. :)

It is "Hit the Road" size 72 for the REGION and YORK. You can download the font at http://dafont.com and search "Hit the Road". The number is Hit the Road size 200. (if it doesn't fit, make the font smaller or stretch the shield sideways.

I'm sorry, but I've got almost no idea what your talking about. Did I delete something, or vote on something, or something? -Royalguard11(Talk·Review Me!) 02:23, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The category was listed at WP:CSD under G4 (reposts of xFD deleted material). The pertinent discussion was at Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_December_5#Ontario_county_roads_subcategories back in December, with the decision to put all the articles into Category:Ontario county roads instead of having smaller categories. I'm not sure what (if anything) has changed since then, but the best place to discuss it would probably be Wikipedia:WikiProject Ontario Highways (which I see you're part of already) or with Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada Roads even (I see you're a part of that too). If something has changed with the categorization, then feel free to recreate it if that is what people have decided. I was just following CSD (yes I know, bad defence, but I didn't know any other information at the time). -Royalguard11(Talk·Review Me!) 02:48, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

My RfA Request (Would you like to nominate me?)

edit

Hi RingtailedFox,

It's me again! I am planning to try to Request for Adminship (RfA). I failed miserably in the January's RfA with only 33% consensus. Well, I will be on again at RfA probably next month, probably during Easter. Will you be willing to nominate me? Please see my Editor Review, and review me (give me comments, feedback, and coach me) and make your decision, please nominate me! I have currently about 3100 edits, which is doubled of my edit count during my first RfA, and during the upcoming weeks, I'll probably squeeze 500 more edit counts.

Thank you, and please reply,
