Second/Sophomore

You were right to "give me shit" and point out that 'second' means a unit of time also; that edit summary was ill-considered, and I've stopped using it. But I'm still going to change any uses of "sophomore album, "sophomore effort" or even "sophomore collection" which are not direct quotations. This isn't because I think that people are using a big word when a smaller will do; according to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Music/MUSTARD#Usage it is jargon term and its use is discouraged. pablomismo|\talk 08:33, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Mark wilkinson singer

Incidentally, ever heard of this bloke? Someone keeps recreating pages about him (mainly copied directly from his website - http://www.markwilkinsonmusic.com/) but there isn't much to assert notability. If he's a Big Thing in Oz then he deserves a better article … pablomismo|\talk 11:15, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Nah, not big. My band's more notable and successful than he is, and I'm not about to create one about us. Mind you, WP:OWN prohibits it anyway. I had a similar thing happen with a non-notable guy named Sean Carey and someone kept creating pages about him. The trouble was that they'd delete the page about the actually notably Sean Carey, the guitarist from Thirsty Merc. That was a pain, in a similar way. --lincalinca 11:28, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that; I suspected it might be the case. pablomismo|\talk 19:52, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Sydneyflag.jpg

Image:Sydneyflag.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Response to your "8/8 Garbage" in regards to "What I've Done"

Hey, I left a response to a message you left on the discussion board for Linkin Park's What I've Done article. I was curious what you thought about it and whether or not you agreed. I think the time sig might indeed be 8/8, though I never regularly thought about it, your comment brought it to my attention, and after a few minutes of analysis and lettin' the beat take over, I'd have to say the pattern is 2+3+3.

What are your thoughts?

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Mykinda.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Mykinda.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Dream Days at the Hotel Existence

Should it? I've never read that; I fail articles if they require a lot of work in one or more areas to reach GA status. The manual of style states "In general, formal writing is preferred; therefore, the use of contractions, such as “don’t”, “can’t” and “won’t”, is avoided unless they occur in a quotation." (Sorry for the grammar in the review :)) The placing of the succession box was a suggestion (hence placed in the latter section). I would disagree with the over-information point; "Australian radio station Triple J" sounds fine to me. Remember that making the reader click on Triple J to find out what it is breaks the flow.

The paragraphs still need expansion or merging (per the MOS). In general, I failed the article because the prose needs work; note that I only pointed out a few examples in my review. WP:GA/R may be a suitable avenue to explore however. CloudNine 07:39, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Crowded House singles

Hi, just wanted to say nice work on the new articles for various CH singles. It's overdue and you're off to a great start! Z00ropean 14:00, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Album covers

May I notify that album or single covers can be used in its main article only. It cannot be used elsewhere including discography sections or articles. WP:NONFREE states non-free content can only be use to a minimum amount possible. Thank you. RaNdOm26 11:07, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

While I understand the purpose of non-free, as a guideline, it's supurfluous. Wikipedia's number one rule in conjunction with the non-free/fair use laws that wikipedia is governed by (i.e. its servers are located in the USA) don't preclude inclusion in this sense. I believe you're making reference to the use in the discography for Crowded House and fair use is established ina simple preamble indicating that all of the artworks are created by the group's bassist Nick Seymour. It would only be appropriate to make mention of this if all of these album covers/artworks can be displayed together, as is the case here. I'm not saying it's always appropriate to use fair use images in this way, but there is a clear reason behind it, in this case. --lincalinca 12:08, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Melbourne

good find on Melbourne. I also found a few weeks ago the article taking credit for actors/singers from other states because they had appeared on Neighbours. Michellecrisp 02:33, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Michelle. Some prose allows for non-Melbourne originated people to be listed (such as Tina Arena in the next phrase) but the way it was worded for Countdown made out that they were Melbourne bands. Young Talent Time and Neighbours would be fine if the article makes out implicitly that the shows are from Melbourne but the actors/singers may not be. Anyway, thanks! I like to know I don't go unnoticed. --lincalinca 02:41, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
No worries, if they appeared on Neighbours then fine to put in the neighbours article, but on a high level article like Melbourne seems like advertising or taking credit for their whole career. Michellecrisp 02:44, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Dream Days PR

Full marks for initiative, but WP:PR (I assume it's going there) is a hellhole that should be avoided at all costs. I had an article there for two months, and all it received was an automated review using a js tool. Unfortunately (as far as I can see) there are no peer review outlets at WPP:MUSIC, WP:ALBUM, or WP:SONGS. I've listed it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/Peer review, and hopefully the response there will be a bit quicker (in any case, two peer reviews will be doubly beneficial). Giggy UCP 04:09, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Please do not rate changes as vandalism if they are true facts and a good reflection.

Melbourne - Global City

Why do you keep undoing my edits on Melbourne without any discussion or comment ? Please explain why it is not appropriate to mention the fact that Melbourne is the southernmost global city ? My rationale was that the term global city status is mentioned in almost every other article of this type (see Sydney) and previous efforts to describe the "southernmost" had been vague. This seems like a more than adequate contribution to summarise both. --Biatch 00:32, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

There's a few things. I don't think that "Global City" should be an article to begin with as it's a vague neologism and its definition varies almost literally from person to person. The other reason stems from that in that as it is a neologism and undefined, other than here in Wikipedia, it displays a bias which should be avoided wherever possible. The term "Global City" once (and originally) only referred to six cities internationally: New York, Paris, Sydney, London, Munich and Johannesberg however the list has been inflated by the egoes of the cities not initially included, and as ego is related to a point of view, I don't believe it's suitable (and therefore, my use of the term "inappropriate") to include the phrase in the article. --lincalinca 03:22, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Nirvana(band)

My apologies for removing that information about amount of records sold. I, personally, thought the number to be closer to 50 million. 80 million seemed a bit far fetched to me. Once again, sorry! ScarianTalk 06:02, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I appreciate you saying so. I don't think Chris replied to me about that. And I also agree, frequented is a much 'nicer' word than 'hung out'. Thanks! EDIT: Did you read the suggestions that I had made on User talk:ChrisB's for replacement of the phrase "hung out"? You probably saw 'frequented' as a suitable synonym anyways. ScarianTalk 06:38, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
I didn't look at your comment on his page, but it's good to know we agree on that. I like the term "spent time" that you suggested, but it's possibly a bit unencyclopedic also (though lately, I've been lazy on my prose hoping someone out there's bold enough to go and change my dialogue... I just pad out the pages hoping that someone wants to improve my text... AND reference it haha). --lincalinca 06:43, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Bah, I'm lazy too! Sometimes, instead of editing an article, I'll just stick a bunch of [relevant] tags on and hope that someone else does the sourcing/editing. Ah, I see you're a Muse fan :-) Awesome! ScarianTalk 07:15, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your input

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Kylie_Minogue - there is nothing inherently wrong with multiple items on that page, as they are subsidiary to the WP Australia wikip[roject - that is indeed what we are talking about on the WP Template talk page discussion - as for the main article pages - that is indeed another matter SatuSuro 06:28, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

I wasn't saying it was invalid, but just an eyesore. I'm a delusionist, meaning that I believe some things can be simplified (espcially as categories) but that others should be expanded. In this case, I find it harder to find an appropriate category because so many apply to her. Her's isn't the only article (and I meean article, not talk page) that I think is overcategorised. look at Oprah or Olivia Newton-John. But again, this is my gripe, not a policy or anything.--lincalinca 06:35, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
The template is to do with talk pages of categories on the talk page - your gripe is with categories put on the front pages - we are at cross purposes - best to take that to the talk page (oh the circles we go) of the kylie particle. Apparently George Bush has the largest number - then you can be thankfull you have nothing to do with that, cheers (I agree with your point though - best to keep the categories on the front/article page to a sensible minimum) oh well sigh SatuSuro 06:40, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

WP:HOUSE / WP:CROWDIES (heh, love the 2nd one!)

I'd love to help you! I must say I'm a bit younger then Crowded House, but I'd still be very glad to help out as much as I can. User:Lincalinca/WikiProject Crowded House seems to be copied exactly off WP:FING, correct? Well, it'll need a fair bit of customisation, especially in terms of categories, before it's a new project, but I'll do what I can.

The quickest way to get started would be to create a project banner (like {{Powderfinger Banner}} which automatically sorts into categories (again, you can copy the source from {{Powderfinger Banner}} to make it easier, and change the word Powderfinger to Crowded House). When you've tagged a few articles with this, you'll have articles in all the x-class Crowded House articles by quality cats, which can then be combined into Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Crowded House articles by quality statistics (essential).

Rather then post a step by step guide to making a project here, I'll just give you a few useful links.

Everything else will (mostly) be category and article tagging work, but feel free to ask me if you need any help. I haven't forgotten the help you gave WP:FING when it was still new, and I'd be honored to repay it. Good luck, Giggy UCP 02:40, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Heh, I'm 15...Powderfinger is more my generation ;) As for advertising, what I did with WP:FING was just watchlist a lot of Powderfinger pages (I think I have all of them on there, actually) and scan the history, looking for recent major contributions. Then slap {{Powderfinger Invite}} on the talk page of anyone who was contributing to the articles. Which brings me to my next point; some method of recruitment would be good too, but I'll let you get to it. If you need any help, give me a yell! Giggy UCP 02:49, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
Just as a note, the current tagging for Image:House man.jpg means you aren't allowed to use it in a userbox (see WP:FUC). Giggy UCP 09:20, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Image removal

Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria is a policy, not a guideline, and it clearly states that copyrighted images should not be used in templates. WP:IAR does not apply. It states that you should ignore a rule if it prevents you from improving the encyclopedia. Using copyrighted images to decorate templates goes against Wikipedia's third pillar and does not improve the encyclopedia. 17Drew 19:00, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Crowded House images

The Kia Kaha web page has many quality press images, see here for an example. As they are press photos I am assuming they should fit within the copyright criteria but I am not really sure. Do we need to contact the owner of the website before using these? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mutley (talkcontribs) 16:40, 15 July 2007

Yeah, thanks for those. They'd be useful, but they are bound by copyright, as they're junket photos owned by Capitol records and used there under no fair use licence. It's legal because they're not hosted in the USA, but we couldn't bring them on here as we have a fairer use rationale for the images we already have on Crowded House and such, but it's a good find. If you see any others, post here or at WT:CROWDIES. Thanks again! --lincalinca 12:48, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
Hi, I posted a nice pic of Matt at commons, there are a few photos of the crowdies there, check this category (one of Neil, one of Tim). I have a few more shots of Neil & Tim etc (all concert shots), but don't know if any more are needed (there's only so many you can put on an article). Kind regards, Deadstar 12:29, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
LOL to the newly inserted template on Wounded Cougar - did you read what was there before I did a bit of a clean up? :P I don't know the first thing about them either, but what was there was very imaginative. I'll join the CH project - I don't know how much time I can spend at it though. Kind regards, Deadstar 13:08, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Nonfree images may be deleted without debate after a certain period of time, under certain circumstances. Where was Image:Mykinda.jpg being used, and what was the image of? (I can't see it after it's been deleted). Thanks, ugen64 05:27, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Re:Enz project

Thanks. I noticed this being discussed at the NZ noticeboard - I must (must must) make a mental note of it. I won't officially join the project, but I am interested in the Enz, so don't be surprised to see my name crop up in edit summaries.

BTW, to pre-empt something that may possibly arise for the project, rock-group-specific WikiProjects usually find it far better to use talk page banner templates rather than stub templates specific to the band, and band-specific stub types are generally frowned on at WikiProject Stub sorting (the project I do most of my work here for). So if a stub type is suggested, I'd recommend going for something like {{WPBeatles}} instead :) Grutness...wha? 06:40, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean by stub type. I initially create a stub for WP:FING a while ago which was deleted because people didn't like it, but I haven't created a new stub for Crowded House or Split Enz at all? Could you clarify that? Oh, and which NZ noticeboard? The W/Project? --lincalinca 06:45, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Stub type = Stub template and category, like {{Song-stub}} and Category:Song stubs. And no, as I said, this is just to pre-empt things in case you considered making one. Thought it better to suggest this straight off rather than have you go to the effort of make one and then find someone taking it to WP:SFD. As for which NZ noticeboard, yes, it probably was at WP:NZ, come to think of it - I couldn't remember whether I'd seen it mentioned there or at Wikipedia talk: New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board. Keb' Mo'

Hello! I've been reading some of the articles you created for Keb Mo's albums and I noticed you emphasize he is a Delta blues singer. I agree that he must be influenced by Delta blues and a student of the early masters, but does he himself fall under the "Delta blues" category? I'm no specialist, but it didn't ring right to me. I have a notion that Delta blues goes approximately from Mississippi John Hurt to Muddy Waters (who made the transition from Delta to Chicago blues I'd say), but I could be wrong.
