Rmpatl9, all of these topic look promising. However, none of your topics include internal links so I can check what you had in mind. Make sure to always add internal links when discussing other pages on Wikipedia, so other users can find the pages you're working on or thinking about. Your "Topics" header is also formatted incorrectly, so you'll want to check the markup cheat sheet for how to create a section header.

Any of these topics will probably work. I think the Columbus page is especially promising, since you could write a new subsection about his writings. That alone would definitely qualify as a substantial contribution to an article. The Winthrop article is also promising, and would allow you to really develop some excellent research skills (in order to prove or disprove the information on the page)/ Wheatley may also work. If the poems in our book aren't mentioned on her page, you could add those works to her page, then create spur pages to summarize criticism on a poem or two. I look forward to hearing what you decide! Nadinecross78 (talk) 03:02, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • In the Christopher Columbus page, there is no mention of the letters that he wrote about his voyages so I will add that section mentioning the "Letters to Ferdinand and Isabella Regarding the Fourth Voyage" and "Letter to Luis de Santangel Regarding the First Voyage" and and the history around them.
  • On the A Model of Christian Charity page, there is only one citation on the whole document so I will add outside sources on the structure of the sermon to make it verifiable.
  • On the Self-Reliance page, the summary is very broad so I can add more detail and examples to support the ideas of the essay. There are only to sources for the summary as well and it is cited only at the top so the information is not as reliable. On the talk page, it mentions how the summary is too broad to understand the point of the essay, so I will fix this.

You don't need to explain your plans here. This may be more appropriate for User:Rmpatel9 as as a sort of "to do" list (I keep mine at User:Ricky81682/todo). As to those pages, you should feel free to add those on the articles themselves, don't create new articles. However, as to the letters, how much information is there on them? Is it better to create a separate article on them if it would almost be distracting to the whole Columbus article? Feel free to respond at my talk page if you need help or advice. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 00:59, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Summary

edit

Self-Reliance. I found an article from a database that explains Ralph Waldo Emerson's Self-Reliance. It includes many of the important quotes from the passage along with the ideas Emerson was trying to explain. The article explains what it means to be self-reliant in regard to Emerson and how a person could be self-reliant. She also explains his viewpoint on others and how they relate to his model. The author explains the idea of trusting one's self and sticking up for what "you" believe no matter what others think. The author mentions how solitude is useful for self-reliance, as well. She also describes his view on laws and the government as compared to the individual. I will add these parts into the summary part and elaborate on each by giving quotes from Emerson and the article. The article is called "Transcendentalism and the Self: Ralph Waldo Emerson" by Joyce W. Warren. A Model of Christian Charity. I found another article discussing the main points of this sermon. This author mentions how the wealth and power were unequally distributed but it was for the good of the societY. It also mentions the terms of mercy and how everyone has to help each other. The author also explains the term "City Upon A Hill" and love within the community. This article was called "John Winthrop's Modell Convenant and the Company Way" by Scott Michaelsen. All of this looks great, Rmpatel9. My only minor caution is that you make sure to summarize those articles in your own words and include direct citations. In other words, make sure that you don't accidentally plagiarize by using the exact words of other people (unless you use quotation marks!). Keep up the good work here! • As Stated before by Dr. Bauer, add specific links that lead to directly what you are working on. From here, it is much easier to access your edits.
  • This is a great idea to add in Columbus' letters from his voyages, however I would suggest that you add the names of both letters he wrote and where/who they were going to.
  • In the Christian Charity page, you exposed an existing flaw that will be fixed, however there is no link to this page, so it is difficult to find these mistakes.
  • You mentioned one of Wheatley's poems from the book, however I would create a list of unlisted poems from the book and add them to the page.

Wikipedia:Self-Reliance

What are you trying to do? You wrote an article about self reliance in your sandbox, but moved it to the wrong place. Wikipedia:Self-Reliance is not article space. Self-Reliance would be article space. Then you replaced the contents with an articel about a sermon named "A Model of Christian Charity". So, now you have an article with the wrong name, in the wrong wikipedia space. Meters (talk) 00:21, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

And Self-Reliance already exists so what you did was copy that article to your sandbox, move it to the wrong place in Wikipedia, and then replace it with something completely different. Meters (talk) 00:24, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
And the material you replaced the original article with is also a copy of an existing article. Meters (talk) 00:31, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Wikipedia:Self-Reliance. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – A Model of Christian Charity. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at A Model of Christian Charity – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Meters (talk) 00:29, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I moved the page back to User:Rmpatel9/sandbox. Wikipedia space is for guidelines and proposals related to the project not for articles. However there is another policy against creating a fork of an article that's already here (A Model of Christian Charity) so unless you have a good reason for another version it, your version should be deleted and you should work on the main article one. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 00:53, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
It looks like you are trying to make major changes to the existing article. There's no problem with doing that, but it's best to do them in small chunks so other editors can evaluate each section's changes separately. Meters (talk) 00:56, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Meters here. It's actually a problem if you make your edits to your sandbox version and then add them at one time like this. Wikipedia works best when we keep all contributions in one place but your edits are technically in two places, A Model of Christian Charity and User:Rmpatel9/sandbox. It's also a problem for you to keep copying and pasting back and forth like that. You should feel comfortable editing straight to the active page. We were all new here on at one point and no one should be mean to you if you make an innocent mistake. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:39, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Rmpatel9, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few links to pages you might find helpful:

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or click here to ask for help here on your talk page and a volunteer will visit you here shortly. Again, welcome!

Most of this you already got but you deserve a formal (or informal) welcome as well. :) Use the sandbox to test out editing if you need the help but you've doing quite well. The sandbox is also useful if you have some partial articles that you want to work on (I have a few) but aren't ready to go 'live' with. Also, don't forget to sign your posts! We have to know who you are! :) -- Ricky81682 (talk) 03:03, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to keep posting so fast here but can you double-check on the page numbers for Hacht? Pages 359–37 seems backwards (or is 359-437?) -- Ricky81682 (talk) 03:07, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
