Indoeuropean Language chart

edit

Your chart was deleted because it was your own original research and synthesis, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. Please read WP:NOR and WP:NOT. Dominus Vobisdu (talk) 19:24, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

But I just draw the mathematical results that anyone can calculate using published (Julius Pokorny et al.) data. It's not a new idea nor a new discovery! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robertius (talkcontribs) 21:37, 5 August 2012
Sorry, but you can't do that. This does not qualify as WP:CALC. If you disagree, take it to WP:NORN. Dominus Vobisdu (talk) 19:41, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
So I have to publish it somewhere and someone else has to cite it here on Wikipedia? Or do I just have to cite the list of PIE vocabulary (Pokorny etc.)? How can this useful chart (just calculated with an ordinary pocket calculator using existing data!) be brought to Wikipedia users??? ---edit: I found this here from the NOR-article: "5 Routine calculations: Routine calculations do not count as original research. Basic arithmetic, such as adding numbers, converting units, or calculating a person's age, is allowed provided there is consensus among editors that the calculation is an obvious, correct, and meaningful reflection of the sources." Voilà! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robertius (talkcontribs) 21:55, 5 August 2012
It would have to be published in a serious academic linguistics journal. Citing the sources for your data won't help. And it's still original research and synthesis whether you add it, or someone else does. As I said already, this does not qualify as "routine calculations". Sorry. Sorry, didn't notice you already linked to the calculation rule. I see, there is no chance. But I think from drawing old facts on a helpful chart to publishing in a serious academic linguistic journal is just a too big step. This is really nonsense... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robertius (talkcontribs) 22:05, 5 August 2012
Unfortunately, those are the rules. Thanks for trying, though. Good luck! Dominus Vobisdu (talk) 20:13, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
What is the difference between my chart and e.g. the map on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_J_%28Y-DNA%29 ? It also uses already published data, but is an own creation on a visualization basis. Just like my work, I see no difference in the process of creation... Robertius (talk)
That's irrelevant. We're talking about your picture here, not stuff on other articles. That's not our concern at the moment. See WP:OSE. By the way, please sign your posts in the future by typing four tildes. See [[WP:Signatures]. Dominus Vobisdu (talk) 20:38, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm interested in what is the difference. Is there one or not? Just for understanding. BTW: When my image is published in a serious research journal i'm afraid it can't be published on wikipedia because of copyright restrictions of the publishing company. So what to do? Robertius (talk)

I don't know if there's anything you can do. Try asking at WP:Teahouse. Good luck! Dominus Vobisdu (talk) 20:54, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia is full of charts and graphs. How did they get here? Own creation is forbidden, illegal copying is forbidden, only published sources are allowed - by wikipedia, but not by publishing companies. I see no way to bring living and speaking charts and graphs into this encyclopaedia. Thanks for understanding the problem. Robertius (talk)
Yes, it is difficult. Even though I've been an editor here for several years, I rarely get involved with graphics and copyright issues. Your best bet is to ask either at WP:Teahouse,WP:HD, or WP:VPM, probably in that order. Before then, it would help if you read and understood our main policies and guidelines, or what people tell you will make little sense. These are the main ones you will need to know: WP:V, WP:RS, WP:NOR, WP:NPOV, WP:C and WP:IUP. I know you're a new user, and I wish you luck with all that reading, but it'll make things a lot easier and less frustrating if you understand the policies.
