Is Vasily Karazin Ukrainian?
editIt was brought to attention that Vasily Karazin (1773-1843, scientist and founder of Karazin University in Kharkiv) is described as Russian on Wikipedia. I checked several European languages on 6th of June 2023:
- uk: український
- fr: ukrainien
- pl: ukraiński
- pt: ucraniana
- de: war ein russischer
- en: Russian
- sv: var en rysk politiker av grekisk härkomst
- ru: российский
Additions describing Vasily Karazin’s ethnicity (and citizenship) in the infobox and in the text have been repeatedly reverted on English Wikipedia. Additions have been lacking source. Reverts have been done with comments such as "As can be surmised by the article, none of those statements are true.” (7 April 2023) "He wasn't Ukrainian by language, ethnicity, culture or citizenship" (11 October 2022), "Labelling him 'Ukrainian' is both ahistorical and incorrect from the standpoint of nationality/ethnicity. This should not obscure the fact that his legacy is relevant to present-day Ukraine." (16 July 2022). See article history.
Taking these comments into account, we searched for sources, and found one that describes his background in more detail, and based on this, added to the article "Vasily Karazin ... was a Ukrainian (paternally of Serbian descent, maternally from a Ukrainian Cossack elite family) ... Russian enlightment figure ..." with this reference. Robert (talk) 17:29, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
