User talk:Romarin/WikiProject Common Era
Please leave any comments relating to WikiProject Common Era here. As the status of this project is still a proposed WikiProject, any input as to the technical aspects of running such a project are greatly appreciated. Thanks for helping out! Romarin 02:20, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
Not sure
editI'm not sure this WikiProject is a good idea, at least as its goals currently stand. While of course the project members may feel that BCE/CE are superior to BC/AD, this issue has been discussed extensively on Wikipedia and no consensus for either style has emerged. There are good arguments both ways. Furthermore, I would caution the participants that project directives and activities must still fall within Wikipedia guidelines; it would be inappropriate to simply visit articles, changing BC/AD to BCE/CE. An arbitration case against one user ended with significant restrictions on his editing era notation. I don't mean to dissuade you, but perhaps you should consider clarifying exactly what your methods will be; as they are currently written I don't think they will find much community support. Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions. Thanks! — Knowledge Seeker দ 00:20, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
- Dear Knowledge Seeker, thank you for your note, which is much more helpful and courteous than the one left on my personal talk page. I appreciate your explanations, and the fact that you seem to be assuming good faith. I was not aware that this issue had already been discussed at length. If it is ok, I would like to better formulate the project goals; meanwhile, I would appretiate my temporary project page being un-tagged (again). Furthermore, I am not sure why User:CrazyInSane keeps insisting that the information at WP:DATE#Eras mentions coming to a concensus, whereas as far as I can see it does not. If you can explain this to me as well, I would greatly appreciate it. On the other hand, I have no problem with reaching a concensus on talk pages before changing era notations, if that is what will be necessary. Again, thank you for your note. - Feelings sometimes run high on this matter, but I am happy I have been able to help. I left some more detailed comments regarding this matter on your talk page. I am afraid it would be inappropriate for me to remove the MFD tag since whether or not the project should be deleted, the proposal for deletion is reasonable. I have thought about the matter and unfortunately feel that deletion is probably appropriate in this case, for reasons I explained on the MFD page. You of course are welcome to reopen discussion on era notation at Wikipedia; I just don't feel that this project will be the way to go about doing so. Please feel free to ask me to clarify any of my comments or to supply any information I might be unaware of. — Knowledge Seeker দ 04:49, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
I would support a WikiProject to eliminate cultural bias in dating if such a thing were possible. The fact is that BCE/CE are not "religiously neutral" because it's just the same old Western system with a new name. It just disguises the cultural bias. It would be like renaming Christmas "Winterday" and then expecting the whole world to celebrate it. It's an insult to the intelligence of the reader, especially if that reader really happens to be non-Western and prefer a non-Western dating system. If you've read the talk page you know the community is divided on this. Offering a badge for one side is not going to help. Being louder doesn't make you right. The badge just seems inflammatory and rude. --Ben Applegate 17:49, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
