William H. Mounsey‎

I note your recent edits to William H. Mounsey‎ but family tradition is not sufficient evidence; can you provide a reliable source? (Also is there some possible confusion with his nephew Augustus Henry Mounsey?) Nedrutland (talk) 12:28, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I can. There is no confusion with the other Mounsey. Anna Ritchie ("Prehistoric Orkney"; see: references) mentioned in her book major William Henry Mounsey because of the Dwarfie Stane with inscriptions made by major William Henry Mounsey (1850) and wrote about him as a British spy who worked in Persia and Afghanistan. Hissem-Mounsey Family is a special website witth all the details about the family history. Anna Ritchie is mentioned in it too.Romeinsekeizer (talk) 12:47, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

A family history website is not in itself a reliable source, however it does refer (in some cases) to sources that are reliable.

That he was promoted to major seems no more than a family tradition that is contradicted by the notice of his death in the Morning Post and, as referenced on the family website, by the 1851 and 1871 censuses. Any promotion would be recorded in the London Gazette and I can not find it there.

Anna Ritchie is a reliable source however she is an archaeologist and not an expert on 19th-century history so I would hope to see further corroboration of the claim of him working as a "spy" which is no more than an aside without reference in mentions of his inscription on the Dwarfie Stone (and she gives his name as "Mouncey") in Orkney (1996) Nedrutland (talk) 10:46, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you again. I had the same problem, but followed Anna Ritchie. I think she followed the family. Only on the family's website it is mentioned too. Same problem with "major". Same sources. Indeed no mentioning in military archives. I could not find it too. It always ends with "captain". So we remove the major and we remove the spy. At any rate now.
