Requesting orphaned revision review

Hi, since Ronbot didn't bother requesting human review on File:Monstercat logo.png, I am requesting a review of the Orfurrev tag placed on the article. Thank you. jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk • contribs) 22:01, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

@Jd22292: RonBot has not processed the file yet, more than likely tonight (7500 files to do) - Joe's Null Bot stalled several days ago, so files were not getting moved to the 7 day category. Joe fixed it late last night, it then has taken quite a while to process the category and get up to date. Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:29, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi, noted your bot change

298 × 335 (23 KB) Reduce size of non-free image to NFCC guideline

Original

310 × 349 (8 KB) World Chess Championship 2018 logo original JPG file 248K changed to GIF with 25% reduction to 8K

Seems to me that the size increased from 8K to 23K instead of reduced size.

which is preferred 8K or 23K?

tnx Petersam (talk) 07:23, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

@Petersam: The guideline is just about the pixel area. DatBot just uses the Python Imaging Library to reduce the size to the biggest possible size that is under 100,000 pixels. No other factors are part of the reduction, the actual code line for reduction is
img = img.resize((int(basewidth),int(hsize)), Image.LANCZOS)
which is resize to the calculated height and width using full antialiasing (LANCZOS). I know we say low resolution - but wiki's "file resolution" is different to everyone else - in a search, the fileres: parameter is the square root of the pixel count! Marked as OTRS received

Happy holidays Ranhjones. I saw you added an "OTRS received" template to an image I took and uploaded for anyone to use. --It was originally intended to support the English Honda Ridgeline article, but a better option became available for the point being made in the article, so it's no longer used.-- Given this image is not currently being used, is there a problem with it being on Wikipeida? Is this way you added the OTRS template. Basically. I don't understand the need for your edit. Please educate me. --McChizzle (talk) 04:02, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

@McChizzle: Oops - I seem to have added it to the wrong image, maybe too much Xmas cheer... Well spotted. Should have been File:2017 Honda Ridgeline towing a Rockwood Mini Lite 2109S.jpg. I was also looking for the other image in the e-mail and was failing to find it. Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:28, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for taking care of that image Ronhjones. I was wondering if it was going to get tagged by your volunteer group or if Larry did something wrong with his permissions email. Keep on celebrating for New Year's is just around the corner and practise makes perfect. ;-) --McChizzle (talk) 18:26, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

Ranhjones, I reviewed the image you tagged as having OTRS permission problems. Since Larry Krainson contributed his photo at my request, I would like to work with him on fixing whatever's wrong. Can you give me details on the exact problem so I can work with Larry to get it fixed? --McChizzle (talk) 13:56, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

@McChizzle: It a classic problem, people send in pictures and NOT the commons URL - the OTRS team does not have the resources to find two imagea in the 250 million images. I found File:2017 Honda Ridgeline towing a Rockwood Mini Lite 2109S.jpg called in e-mail "side view towing.jpg", I have not found "front view towing.jpg" - The same subject but taken dead front on. If you can point me to the commons image, I can probably approve it. Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:44, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
Okay, Larry just sent a new email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org titled "Permissions." If you can find it, is it sufficient to approve his image or do you need something else? --McChizzle (talk) 16:56, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
@McChizzle: I've approved that one for you. I assume the other image did not get uploaded? Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:03, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
That's correct, I didn't upload the "other image" for Larry never sent it to me. Regardless, the "side view towing.jpg" is the image that was desired for the Honda Ridgeline article. Thank you for helping us Ronhjones! Enjoy what's left of the holidays. Regards, McChizzle (talk) 17:12, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

Non-free reduce on John Hoskins (officer)

I'm concerned about the tagging this evening for File:JMHoskinsLifecover08141950.png. When I added the magazine cover, I'm sure I explained the rationale for non-free use satisfactorily. My concern is that the image is already quite low sized (206 KB) and the text of the image is barely readable at the current time (specifically the date and the subheading under the the name of the photograph, "Naval Air Boss in the Far East"). When I re-scaled this image before upload I was careful to scale down as far as possible, but still leave the text readable. I believe this is sufficient reason to avoid the arbitrary and automatic re-scaling proposed in the tag. Please consider removing the tag. Can I get another editors' view on this? BusterD (talk) 03:41, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

Using the IMAGE RESIZE CALCULATOR linked on the Image reduce page, the target image resize is from 290 by 399 to the new size of 270 by 371. This change seems unnecessary, even by the standards demonstrated in the IMAGERES link. This seems like a very small difference, but I'm concerned about legibility as described above. I did several experiments while resizing to find the optimal minimum resolution, and I think I have it correct. BusterD (talk) 03:55, 6 January 2018 (UTC)
@BusterD: As WP:Image resolution says - you can have bigger, but make sure you explain why it's over 100,000 pixels in the rationale and then add {{non-free no reduce}}. You have done the correct thing, you have tried various sizes to get the smallest possible working size. It's not possible to have a guideline that works for every image, which is why that caveat it there. Naturally other editors cannot know the effect of being in guideline size until it's actually reduced - you already know what it would be like. FYI The reducing bot allows up to a 5% oversized image (i.e. 105,000 pixels), that was written into the bot many, many years ago - so someone decided way back to not to do very small adjustments. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:20, 6 January 2018 (UTC)
Sorted out the revert to your size and added template - just explain in the fur that you have used the lowest size you could achieve. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:28, 6 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the revert and the assist. Looking at the bot resized image, I feel vindicated in getting worked up about it. Just the tiny adjustment did what I thought, rendered the text illegible. Next time I'll be better prepared. BusterD (talk) 15:30, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

Horton house photo

Do you really think that File:Horton House image from 1927.jpg needs to be reduced in size? It is already only 57KB. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 03:59, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

@Bubba73: Wiki does not care about KB - sometimes images get reduced and the size goes up. The guideline is <100,000 pixels. You can have bigger if necessary - you need to add {{tl:non-free no reduce} and a reasoning in the FUR. Remember non-free images are only for articles, has the view in the article deteriorated? Ronhjones  (Talk) 14:43, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Reduced size of MIB Group letter image

Hello Ronhjones,

Please explain why you requested for my image File:Medical_Information_Bureau_2017_No-Record_Letter_With_Redactions.png to be reduced in resolution? The whole point of this image was for readers to be able to read the letter from MIB Group. At the reduced resolution, it is unreadable and useless for the article (MIB Group) in which it is being used. I have posted a discussion in File_talk:Medical_Information_Bureau_2017_No-Record_Letter_With_Redactions.png. I respectfully request that this change be undone. --Wykypydya (talk) 19:02, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

@Wykypydya: Restored for now, and tagged. Please see WP:Image resolution - the reasoning for being oversized needs to be fully explained in the Fair Use Rationale, especially as it's so large - and I suspect the biggest, by a mile, non free image on Wikipedia.Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:32, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for that. Would you say that I am going about using this material in the wrong way? Should I instead be using something like a PDF file? Do you know of any other examples of similar material on Wikipedia such as copies of letters, and is there a good example that I should follow? --Wykypydya (talk) 07:35, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
@Wykypydya:I agree it's a tricky one and maybe png is not the correct vehicle for such a subject. Let me look further into it, and I'll come back to you Ronhjones  (Talk) 14:47, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
Based on your suggestions, I tried making 4 cropped pngs with Photoshop, then reducing 50% (text still readable), then combining into PDF. Wiki will describe that PDF as 562 × 750. still large, but not in the same league as the original png. My version (if you want to use it is at http://www.ronjones.org.uk/misc/Letter.pdf, or you can use your own software. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:50, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for generating and posting that. One concern that I also have is how blind readers using Wikipedia with a screen reader would be able to benefit from the image. PDFs have the ability to be "searchable PDFs" by running optical character recognition on the text and embedding the recognized text, but the OCR is typically not perfect. Otherwise, I might be behooved to go through the grueling task of typing up the letter contents in the file description for the benefit of blind users. Using a PDF was just a proposal, but I'm still wondering what's really the best-known method here? I've probably come across similar material on Wikipedia like images of entire letters before, but I can't quite recall where they would have been. Wondering if perhaps we could solicit a recommendation from an expert on this and/or someone who may have dealt with similar material before? Thanks! --Wykypydya (talk) 17:08, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
@Wykypydya:I tried adding OCR, but it was not perfect on the full size version, and worse at 50%. I've only got Nuance Power PDF. It might be better with Acrobat Pro. Maybe the png is not a good basis to start (I do scans and PDF at work - we use black and white tiff from the scanner and Acrobat Pro - even then it can be hit and miss or the output quality.). I've seen plenty of PDFs on commons, in my view most are not OCR. Since it's a non-free image, one could ask at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:01, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
Okay, I went ahead and manually added all of the letter's text to the file page so that anyone can read it with standard Web browsing, including blind people using screen readers. I then also included the image in the article Fair Credit Reporting Act, so now there are two articles using the image. In that case, I suppose the remaining questions are whether the PNG file is still a suitable type for this image, and whether I have included the image in the articles appropriately. I see that if I increase the size of the image with the "thumb" or "frameless" argument and the "upright=scale" argument, then it scales in a "fixed" manner that can overwrite the left-hand Wikipedia navigation bar depending on the size of the browser window (and the screen size of the device that's viewing it). It would be nicer if the image could be "stretched" to fit the available width of the article in the browser window. Unless and until there's a solution to that, I'll leave it as a "gallery" thumbnail for now, and readers can read the letter by either viewing the included text on the file page or opening and zooming in on the image. Please let me know if that is workable as-is, or any other suggestions on how to further improve this! I do hope that I have added value to these two articles by including this letter as an "exhibit". Thanks, --Wykypydya (talk) 19:45, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
@Wykypydya: OOOh, no non-free images in galleries - it will fail WP:NFCC#8, as galleries are just an extra "ornament" Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:38, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
Sorry, how do you mean? Those rules don't appear to specifically prohibit using "non-free" images in "gallery" tags. Are you saying that the image needs to be included (inlined) as a "thumbnail" instead of as a "gallery"? Also, did I really properly classify the image as "non-free" under the circumstances (the letter is my own property even though it came from someone else, etc.)? If there is indeed such an issue with how I've included the image in the articles, can you please fix it or help me to fix it (at least now that we're hopefully past the issue of resolution and that this image can be on Wikipedia)? Thanks, --Wykypydya (talk) 21:04, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
You have a license of {{Non-free fair use in}} - so that makes it a non-free image, and the image will therefore be listed in Category:All non-free media. WP:NFCC#8 says "Contextual significance" - so really it needs to be at the side of paragraph, and ideally mentioned within the paragraph. Most editors regard galleries as mere decorations to an article and not "Contextual significance". Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:19, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Ron, these images reductions are too much. The sign above the shop needs to be visible. The version I've just uploaded is already too small for that, which removes the point of the upload, yet you want it smaller still. SarahSV (talk) 18:53, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

As per Wikipedia policy, the logo used for File:The Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps logo.png is the smallest available. Although it shows as rather large on the file page, In actual use in The Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps article's infobox, it is almost too small... GWFrog (talk) 02:55, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

@GWFrog: The size in the infobox is not controlled by the size of the image - it could be 5000 pixels wide, it has no difference. It's certainly not as small as possible on the image page. I'll have a play later and see if I can improve the article and bring the image page nearer the guideline, a manual tweak is often the best. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:35, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
We'll leave image as it is - reducing text is always tricky, and even PhotoShop does not do well. As for the artilce - it always surprises me that editors add an infobox and then religiously remove all the unused parameters - other editors might not know those parameters exist (you can't guess them). After referring to Template:Infobox drums corps, there is a size parameter, I've added that and increase the image size to a reasonable value. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:55, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
At one time (before this corps and its article existed), I had set the logos for all of the drum corps to approximately the same size on the infobox size parameter (generally eye-balled at 200-300 pixels)... Then, at some point, those parameters were all removed by an administrator as being unnecessary and contrary to Wikipedia policy... GWFrog (talk) 20:37, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
@GWFrog:I think infoboxes are around 200px default (it's all part of a Lua module now). This is an unusual logo with a high aspect ratio, which therefore does not fit the standard. I think I've set it just about right. Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:48, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

Vandalism in the article, Goguryeo

Hello

It was a long time since I asked for your help, but here I am again. I'm asking the same thing to several other administrators about the same matter at hand. About four months ago, the article Goguryeo has been protected due to vandalism, disruptive editing, and edit warring. After a couple of weeks after the protection was broken, two new editors started to vandalize the same article. To introduce you to the situation: they edited out the statements to misrepresent the cited sources, multiple credited sources were entirely removed, and original research has been included to substitute the removal. The two editor(s) in question are: User:Zanhe and User:Koraskadi I have been reverting the article back to the last editorial completed by User:Failosopher since the breakout of the situation.

The content that has been subject to this event are these two qualities:

1- "Goguryeo (고구려; 高句麗; [ko.ɡu.ɾjʌ], 37 BCE–668 CE), also called Goryeo (고려; 高麗; [ko.ɾjʌ]), was a Korean kingdom[4][5][6]"

The two editors mentioned above are constantly removing the bolded word; which goes against these three supporting articles cited.

"Koguryo". Encyclopædia Britannica. Retrieved October 15, 2013.

States that Goguryeo as one of the three Kingdoms of Korea

Byeon, Tae-seop (1999) 韓國史通論 (Outline of Korean history), 4th ed, Unknown Publisher, ISBN 89-445-9101-6.

Emphasizes Goguryeo as one of the most powerful Korean State that arose throughout history

"Complex of Koguryo Tombs". UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Retrieved 2013-10-24.

The current article simply talks about its geographical location. However, the article stated that Goguryeo was Korean when it was retrieved.

2- "Goguryeo has been described as an empire by many scholars", "Goguryeo was a powerful empire and one of the great powers in East Asia"

Phrases in relation to the bolded word are getting removed alongside their supporting citations. This is a completely clear example of vandalism.

Walker, Hugh Dyson. East Asia: A New History. AuthorHouse. pp. 6–7. ISBN 9781477265178. Retrieved 20 November 2016

All these sources explicitly describe Goguryeo as an empire or have been described to have developed into an empire. In fact, the main thesis of the first two articles is about Goguryeo being an Empire. The same sources also state that Goguryeo is Korean, but they were not cited for the quality mentioned above for the current editorial.

The editorial that I have been reverting back into was the protected version; which was constructed by a series of discussions and debates with various editors and administrators including us. Something has to be done about the vandalists or the article in question. For the greater good, I ask you for your help once again, but I will decrease the burden by asking many others. @Ronhjones: Thank you so much! That was so much faster then I expected! I would have to inform the others that the case is resolved - thank you once again! Wandrative (talk) 23:22, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Six months?

I think this was excessive. I had nothing to do with the edit-warring (in fact I only noticed because I was pinged in a conpletely separate "discussion" on the talk page), but it's pretty clear to me that at least one of the parties edit-warring has a very poor understanding of the relevant policies ("removal of cited sources" is not vandalism, etc.) and will need either to retract pretty much everything they said in their edit summaries and on the talk page soon or to be blocked; other than that this seems to be the same kind of routine dispute that has plagued pretty much every article related to ancient and medieval Korea since forever, and normally such disputes result in at most protection for a single week.

Apart from the length of the protection, you seem to have accidentally removed some maintenance tags that had been added by User:JzG long before the edit-warring.

Hijiri 88 (やや) 11:36, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Also, you might want to check the above editor's contribs: you didn't receive the above message because you were the last one to protect the page, since a half-dozen other editors, including one sleeper-SPA with a red-flag username, received basically the same non-neutral message at the same time. Hijiri 88 (やや) 11:56, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
The article has one of the worst edit warring histories that I know. It's obvious that one month makes zero difference. Six months will force them to all use the talk page and either get a consensus or get nowhere - their choice. JzG edit replaced. Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:09, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, but look what happened in the immediate aftermath of your protection: two of the editors went to the talk page and started a back and forth about how I, an uninvolved user, had been wrong to blank an off-topic, racist rant by another (presumably) uninvolved editor four months earlier, and the closest thing the one who restored said racist rant has come to explaining what exactly their content dispute is about is below here on your talk page. Did page protection solve the problem last time? There doesn't seem to have been any discussion on the talk page at all, since, until my opening a new thread, the above-mentioned restored racist rant was the most recent, despite pre-dating the last page protection. This just looks like the sockfarm who have been owning the page for more than a decade will have to wait out a six-month protection period before continuing whatever it was they were doing.
Also, I don't know why, but your edit restored only one of JzG's multiple maintenance tags.
Hijiri 88 (やや) 23:13, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
Hijiri 88 As I have mentioned before, the situation at hand was not about the matter of discussing the legitimacy and correlation of the sources; but rather was about dealing with instances of multiple cited sources being completely deleted, or statements being altered to contradict the original given sources. The editors who disagree with the original statement should not eliminate entire paragraphs by means of original research - but should be the ones to start the discussion on the talk page. I was not trying to prove an opinion about the article, but was informing the events that occurred within the page to other editors and administrators (detailing decstructive activity).
Also, who is this "one sleeper-SPA with a red-flag username"? This sounds like harassment. You have to define what "neutral" is, because apparently acknowledging and informing activities of multiple cited sources being completely deleted or statements being altered to contradict the original given sources is not neutral. This appears to be a deliberate attempt of falsely accusing someone to infringe one's integrity and liability. This kind of action is very repetitive when you deal with editors who alter articles against your own point of view. Wandrative (talk) 17:54, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
@Wandrative: Please keep this discussion on the article talk page where it belongs. "Deleting cited sources" is not vandalism, and usually is not a problem in itself, since deleting citations without changing the content usually implies one has a problem with the citations themselves, which is legitimate when so much of the article is cited to medieval primary sources. And what you did was canvassing, plain and simple: no one would contact a user with a name like "Korean identity" who was completely uninvolved in the dispute in question, and with whom one had never interacted before, and who had made a small number of edits to the page eight months earlier, in good faith, so please drop the charade. Hijiri 88 (やや) 23:13, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
@Hijiri 88: You are the one keeping this conversation to continue on this page. Nobody will write nothing back when you accuse and twist the facts to discredit me, and also the fact at hand. ""Deleting cited sources" is not vandalism, and usually is not a problem in itself, since deleting citations without changing the content usually implies one has a problem with the citations themselves, which is legitimate when so much of the article is cited to medieval primary sources." This claim is simply wrong in so many ways. Firstly, Zanhe deleted entire citations and changed the content. Secondly, Zanhe changed the content whilst leaving certain citations, which led them to contradict one another. Thirdly, none of the sources in relation to Zanhe's editorials in the article, Goguryeo was 'cited to medieval primary sources'. Fourthly, if one has a problem of the article (other then obvious reasons like articles having no co-relation to the statement), one must discuss it on the talk page and try to make a resolution conducted in legitimate reasons. It is clear to see that you are threatening me of 'blocking' me repetitively (under false charges). You are harassing WP:HAR me, Hounding WP:HOUNDING me in particular via a combination of deception. I contacted a handful of editors/administrators who have contributed to dealing with several unknown ID vandals (within the article Goguryeo). But once again you falsely accuse. This is a repetitive infringement of the WP:GF policy to say the least. Wikipedia has a No-Discrimination Policy WP:NDP, which you have infringed by stating that 'User Korean identity' is not reliable because he has "Korean" in his name. He was also involved in dealing with the unknown IP vandals. Wandrative (talk) 01:06, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
@Wandrative: Please stop non-pinging variations on my username; it is beginning to look deliberate. Anyway, I have never once attempted to discuss article content with you on Ron's user talk page - you are the one who keeps bringing that up. Please cite one example of me "accus[ing] and twist[ing] the facts to discredit [you]", or strike that claim: accusationsmof misbehaviour made without evidence are personal attacks. You keep changing your story here: you explicitly claimed in this thread and in several other places that "deleting cited sources" was what you are calling vandalism, and now you are accusing me of distorting facts by "neglecting" the fact that content was changed as well. Changing content is not vandalism either: WP:VANDALISM has a very specific definition, and nothing you have described as vandalism in the past two days actually fits that definition. As I have repeatedly warned you on your talk page, you are playing an extremely risky game by repeating false accusations that you have already been warned about; and you still haven't stricken this accusation against me almost after Bishonen warned you about it. I have never blanked another user's talk page comments without good reason, and your accusation that I have has stood for far too long. Hijiri 88 (やや) 02:54, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
Screw it. Ronhjones, once you've acknowledged my above message to you that you appear to have missed a bunch of the maintenance tags you accidentally blanked, could you close/hat/blank/archive this whole section so the article content discussion that Wand keeps bringing uo here can go back to the article talk page where it belongs, and the problem with Wand's conduct can be addressed on his own talk page and possibly another appropriate forum? I honestly think you would have done better to do this first, since the above long message to you was clearly not a good-faith request for page protection (the same message, with all its biased and -- apparently? -- inaccurate content was sent to multiple users, including at least two non-admins with an obvious bias), but it's clear that no good is going to come from this discussion continuing here. On a related note, you have my apologies for carrying on a discussion that has next to nothing to do with you with another user on your talk page. Hijiri 88 (やや) 03:21, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

How do you do?

Reducing nominal SVG size

Many of your recent SVG uploads have been adding a lot of XML code garbage from Inkscape. For example, File:Baltimore Light Rail logo.svg was originally 2 KB and now is 92 KB, over 45 times as large. Some of the code added includes blocks starting with xlink:href="data:image/png;base64, which may have to do with image rasterisation? Either way, these large blocks of code probably should not be added. After looking at some of the new uploads, the previously fine SVG files are now W3C-invalid (which can be checked here), which is the wrong direction to be going in. If you are going to use Inkscape, maybe try saving files as an optimised SVG and checking the file size? Increasing the file size of SVG files should generally be avoided when possible, especially when the only purpose is to reduce the nominal display size. Cheers, S.A. Julio (talk) 00:55, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

@S.A. Julio: Ok, I'll try that. I was saving as the default "Inkscape SVG", I'll switch to the "Optimized SVG" Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:59, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Reduce page size to NFC guideline (which guideline is valid for vector?)

You wrote

Reduce page size to NFC guideline

— Ronhjones on File:AP-logo-Krakow.svg

Can you show me the NFC guideline for Vectorgrafics, I didn't found them.

Thanks  — Johannes Kalliauer - contrib. 19:14, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

@JoKalliauer:There is no separate guideline - we have a NFC guideline for all images. SVG images always make the wiki software generate a png image in the file description page based on the nominal size of the svg. Many of these png images are very large and way above what we would accept for a bitmap, and hence these files are tagged with a {{non-free reduce}}. Non-free images must be as small as possible - leaving a huge non-free png image on the file description page makes no sense. I don't know a quick way (maybe you do?) of easily changing the nominal page size, which is why we have no bot able to process these files, and hence they sit in Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing for a very long time. Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:27, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
If there is a viewBox in the SVG you just have to add height="316" width="316" as in File:AP-logo-Krakow.svg (compare 08:30, 25. Dez. 2017 with 20:33, 16. Jän 2018).
If there is no viewBox in the SVG then there has to be a height="value1" and width="value2" then change it to viewBox="0 0 value1 value2" and add add the width and height to be viewed: height="316" width="316".
That can easy be done with textreplace in a shellscript. (I can write it, but not now.)
 — Johannes Kalliauer - contrib. 19:39, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
@JoKalliauer: Thank you for that, I will carefully examine those examples and see what I can do - I do have the c:User:Rillke/SVGedit.js installed in my User:Ronhjones/common.js so I can edit svg directly - that might prove useful here. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:51, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
OK, I can see that is going to work really nicely - tried on File:Bu Ali Sina University.svg, File:Bucaspor logo.svg, File:BUET LOGO.svg, File:Bund der Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder.svg, File:Burj Khalifa floors.svg. I will go through those files I did yesterday and tidy up. Thanks again. Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:07, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello, hope all is well.

I just read your comments on my page and would like to know if you can assist in helping me resolve the issue. I still dont know what the specific issue is, only that it has something to do with Spotify. Is there a way I can find out the details of the copyright issue at hand?

Also, is it possible to just revise the copyrighted text? I would like to resolve this ASAP.

Thanks for your time.

@Ebogdan47: If you click "Copyvios report" link (after the https://open.spotify.com/artist/7xpdGx95yjp1d4c6dViRSx link), you will see what text is matched. Assuming you wish to rewrite the bad sections - then click the third "[show]" link on the right hand side - a set of instructions follows showing how to create a temp sub-page and allowing rewrite. (talk page stalker) Thx for that Ron, I wanted to run a tool where the same editor had blanked the page 16 July after initiating AN/I 15 July concerning the prose-adding editor, resulting in immediate indef. The tool reminder has come at an opportune time as I want to restore the content, allegedly from a newspaper eulogy.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 02:30, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

If i change the text of the original source will the wikipedia page automatically update and let go of the copyright claim? I wrote all of the text that its picking up from Spotify but creating a temp sub page sounds messy. If I make a temp sub page will the Gianni Blu Wikipedia page eventually revert to its original form? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ebogdan47 (talkcontribs) 21:50, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

@Ebogdan47: You have to alter the sub-page, as the page is in a list for processing, and they will expect a sub-page to be done. If there is a temp page that is copyright free, then they will fix the main page.Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:14, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

Re-instate my blocked account

Hi Ronhjones,

You have permanently blocked my account. Can you please look into my request?

I am pretty new to this community and did not know about not to upload copyright logos issue.

Can you please re-instate my account? I work for Myntra and thought it would help. I would do all the possible things/processes to ensure this image is deleted and these never occur in future :)

With all good faith awaiting your response at the earliest.

Thank you! Pinaki(Pinaki1001 (talk) 09:23, 10 January 2018 (UTC))

@Pinaki1001: The block on commons came about because it appeared that you were using multiple accounts. After the image c:File:Myntra logo.png - uploaded by User:P1nak1 was deleted, it was later uploaded by yourself. The similar user names and images lends one to think it's the same person. Can you say if these are your accounts? Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:31, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi User:Ronhjones, I currently use pinaki1001 as my official account for contributing. I honestly do not use User:P1nak1 account any more. Fair use size

Hi. A fair number of my fair use images have been reduced in size. I can see that you're doing this in general and I m not being singled out, so absolutely no problem. I would just like to know for the future, to avoid this having to happen again, what the criteria is for size. Is it a linear dimension along one side, the area, or what? I ask because I thought I was following policy when I uploaded them, but obviously I was mistaken. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:36, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

The guideline is at WP:Image resolution, and (since 2011) is 100,000 pixels. I think it might have been 300px on one side before that - not sure, so long ago. It is a guideline (and not a fixed policy), as sometimes an image gets badly corrupted at that size - for these cases the guideline explains that {{non-free no reduce}} can be added along with some reasoning in the FUR, to keep an oversize image. Although the guideline was set in 2011, there was no way of easily finding oversize images until the CirrusSearch engine was improved just over a year ago - and I have been slowing working through them since. If you are not sure about an image, or haven't the time to work out the correct size then just add the {{non-free reduce}} template - the reducing bots (two at present, they have a habit of stalling) will only reduce images that are needed to be done - if not required, they just remove the template. The bots allow a 5% oversize, so up to 105,000 pixels does not get reduced. Hope that all makes sense. Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:59, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
It certainly does, and thank you for it. I was operating (for the most part) by the 300px/side guideline, but I will certainly keep 100K pixels in mind from now on, and tag those images which would make it harder for the reader at a smaller size. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:28, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Well, thanks for the {{non-free no reduce}} guidance that I didn't know of; I'm guessing that you didn't read my oversize rationale before manually applying the reduce bot? And can I request it to be restored per original reason stated? I had forgotten to check and Mustaf Missed on watchlist. Thx.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 01:28, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
No problem. Wow... Ogri, now THAT takes me back... I've a whole book here, somewhere... Paul Sample - Brilliant cartoonist, obviously a biker, not often a cartoon bike is recognisable. :-) Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:43, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
Muchas. Luckily I had something in the house suitable - there was pre-existing some good work put into creating the prose.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 01:51, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Chiming in: I don't think File:Doomfist.png needed to be resized (275*399 = ~110k). 100k is an arbitrary number to ensure fair use protections for copyright holders. I appreciate your work on this in general, as many files need it, but it would be nice if your script/process became somewhat more tolerant. (not watching, please {{ping}}) czar 15:26, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
    • @Czar: Possibly. 110k to 100k is unlikely to make any difference to the article's depiction. I would like to get to a situation where non-free images are either in the guideline OR in Category:Non-free images tagged for no reduction, and thus no unknown "grey" areas - although there is already a defined tolerated oversize of 5%, where the bot will not reduce the image. Then (and only then) it will be far easier to search for the 50 or so oversized (over 105k, allowing for the bot system) new non-free images that happen every day. Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:50, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
Since the purposes of fair use are dependent on the context and most editors won't know to add that specific category, it would make sense to add a toggle for that category/function to an existing fair use template (or else make a new template). I think it'd be reasonable to crank the tolerance to 125/130k, as that's usually an indicator that the uploader had made an effort to produce a low-res image to protect the copyright holder's commercial interests in higher-res production. czar 19:15, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
Agreed with the latter comment - I've just found many of my 110,000-ish have been reduced, when the B&W historic image file size is only 24kb to start with. When an infobox limits the first view, the availability of larger would help. Part of the problem is non-appreciation of the FUR, similar to those logos uploaded to Commons.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 04:46, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
Just add these as examples File:Tom Phillis on BSA Gold Star.JPG 108,800px and 23 KB reduced to 19KB - the person is, erm, soft focus whereas the bike is in focus  . And File:Ernie Lyons.JPG similar size 108,756, 15kb -> 11kb - I'm going to have to start using a higher res/file size and smaller dimensions under the trigger-threshhold. Time I went to bed, and time for the cats to go out......--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 05:16, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
@Rocknrollmancer: Reverted those 2 for you. No more tagging planned (except new uploads!) Ronhjones  (Talk) 13:20, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi Ron, I want to add my voice to those expressing concern here. I don't know how the particular size was chosen, but it's too small. How do we fix that? The latest image you wanted to shrink was File:William Hitchcock with boy and pony, c. 1900.jpg, which I had already made smaller than it needs to be, in anticipation of your arrival. The sign above the shop, the flags and the uniforms can't be seen clearly, which was the point of uploading the image, but you wanted it to be smaller still. And sometimes you arrive (manually, not with a bot) within minutes of the images being uploaded, which to be honest feels a little disturbing. You've explained about the template that can be added, but not everyone knows about that and it doesn't always make a difference. SarahSV (talk) 02:53, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
@SlimVirgin: I can't control the times people upload files, I usually search for them about 7-8pm (UK). We don't have a notification system for reduction, but I'm thinking about something along those lines as there are 50 new well oversized non free images uploaded every day. I have no plans to look at any more old files. Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:27, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Why in the world did you insert {{NOINDEX}} in the middle of the text of the template, instead of at the end near {{Non-free media}} where it would make more sense? For that matter, why add it to a dozen different templates instead of just adding it to {{Non-free media}} directly? Anomie 18:11, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

I didn't know it was possible to add to one template would work, I'll tidy the edits up. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:26, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
I also assumed that svg files would only use a small number of templates - wrong! Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:33, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
I've always said that worrying about rendered size of SVGs is looking at it all wrong, it would be more relevant to look at level of detail. Who cares if a circle or a diagonal line can be rendered at 1000000x1000000 without jagged edges? But if you have a logo containing the coastline of France, for example, you don't need every minor inlet and peninsula coded in the SVG. You only need enough detail to render it suitably at an appropriate size. Anomie 20:07, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

Any chance you would userfy an article for me?

Hi Ronhjones, Found you as one of the admins willing to userfy pages. One of my first and only articles, Ty Morse, was deleted earlier this year after a deletion discussion that focused on RS, most of the sources came from newspapers, and GNG, which seemed to be in a gray area. Ultimately, the admin deleted it, which was incredibly disappointing to me. As an inexperienced editor, I think I didn't have the right wiki-speak for the debate. I'd like the chance to work on my article, improve it, and eventually resubmit it. Could you help me get access to the deleted article? Jemima1418 (talk) 20:37, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Use of signatures in infoboxes

Gooday Ron - we discussed signatures at User talk:Ronhjones/Archive 28#Copyright on Signatures three years ago (!), where you opined that copyright was life + 70 years. I have chanced upon this File:Jane Goodall signature.jpg using {{PD-ineligible}}. If this is correct, that is what I maybe should be using as the signature I had in mind of the deceased author I failed to make clear was a facsimile printed in a magazine produced in many thousands as a pledge of customer service in an advert: 'I promise that..........'. Since then I have obtained another mag of which he was editor with a different format of signature reproduced in the editorial section. Would be nice to stack these. If this file (above) upload is accurate, then I reckon it would apply to mine, since the works were public domain by dint of mass UK circulation of magazine titles. Neosurya100 (talk) 15:36, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

@Neosurya100: It was a proposed deletion, objections to delete can be made even after deletion has happened. The deletion proposer might wish to go for a full deletion process if not improved. Do remember that any Wikipedia page (not created in Draft) is expected to be fully compliant with all policies from creation. Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:21, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Undelete

Thanks a lot for your response. It was really kind of you. The page "Network 2018 film" was deleted. I am seeing that the page can be accessible again. Kindly guide me what should I do in the next steps so that the page is not deleted in the later times. Neosurya100 (talk) 16:28, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

@Neosurya100: Network (2018 film) was a proposed deletion - the reason was Fails WP:NFF the coverage is not sufficient for a film yet to be released. The sources look like rewrites of a press release. You need to make sure that the article complies with WP:NFF.Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:51, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Goguryeo

Hi Ronhjones! The most recent dispute that led to your protecting Goguryeo was basically Wandrative against everyone else. Now that Wandrative has been blocked after an ANI discussion (see [27]), could you please unprotect it, or at least lower the level to semi-protection? All other editors are engaging in civil discussion on the talk page. Thanks! -Zanhe (talk) 22:17, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

@Zanhe: Since one half of the war has been removed, it negates the need for any protection.   Done Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:23, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
That was fast! Thanks a lot! -Zanhe (talk) 22:25, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
I actually think indef semi or indef ECP would be a good idea: can we get that? The blocked user never would have been editing the article if it was under ECP. Hijiri 88 (やや) 23:46, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
@Hijiri88: Since one has been blocked, let's so a little softer to start with - indef PC, so easy to reject any new user's contributions and they are not live until approved, if that presents an issue, then it can be increased to semi (but plenty of editors often object to indef semi, no one seems to object to indef PC). I suspect any main problem will come from IP edits. I'm usually around every evening (UK time). Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:39, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! Honestly, I'm a little miffed that no CU was performed, since these Korean history articles are constantly overrun with socks on all "sides" (though the Korean nationalist, anti-Chinese and anti-Japanese ones seem to be the worst offenders) and I'm not convinced that all Wand's accounts have been blocked, and my partiality toward ECP is partly to make it more difficult for those accounts to do what they've been doing. But this works for the present article. Hijiri 88 (やや) 01:45, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

Request of Non Deleting of Starship 420 graphics

Hello

I am the sole owner and copyright holder of all Starship 420 media. I have recently sent a copy of my copyrights to OTRS Ticket#: 2018012810003767 Trying to get this resolved as quickly as possible. The production is about to start back up in April so I am trying to get all my ducks in a row with all Web outlets. I apologize for the first Wiki being so short. we have a group this week coming in to fill in all the blanks for Starship 420 web presence. Please let me know what other steps (if any) that we should take to keep our media from being deleted.

Thank you Sincerely Patrick Casey Dillistone Merclove (talk) 01:03, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

@Merclove: You cannot upload files to commons once they have been deleted - the re-upload is quickly shown in c:User:SteinsplitterBot/Previously deleted files. The correct procedure is to request undelete at c:Commons:Undeletion requests. You will also find that nothing here or commons happens very quickly. Typical backlog for OTRS on commons is 25 days at present, plus whatever time it takes to process the ticket. Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:42, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello, Ronhjones. Please check your email; you've got mail!
It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{You've got mail}} or {{ygm}} template.

AWB edits

Please be more careful with your AWB editing as you are performing edits that others have already done, such as the case here. You should have seen that it was already tagged; however, your rate of 30 edits per minute tells me that you are not looking at what you are doing and going blindly on the settings you have. I'd recommend you slow down going forward in order to avoid these errors. Thanks. Nihlus 21:38, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

@Nihlus: Waaah. It appears you are using an alternative name of the template namely {{nonfree reduce}}, which I had not set AWB to check (it checks for the presence of the actual template - {{non-free reduce}}). I didn't even know that redirect existed. They were checked some time earlier, but today I had to nip out before adding the tag. C'ést la vie. Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:20, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Roman (Krassovsky)

I see that you removed some of the copyvios from the article Roman (Krassovsky), but actually it was riddled with copyvios and I should have been more comprehensive when I nominated it for speedy deletion. Have a look at this Earwig comparison and you will see what I mean. I guess you were reluctant to delete it because he is obviously a notable person who deserves an article. Perhaps the lead could be retained and subsequently expanded. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:34, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

@Cwmhiraeth: Took that out now. Things like full titles ("The Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia") cannot be reworded, so they cause an abnormally higher % result. Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:48, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

Hello

I believe revision 824271701 is in need of being hidden (revdel) because it contains copyright violation. (Quite a lot of it too.)

The problem is that it is in a user talk page. I cannot request a suppression via the the normal method.

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 10:48, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

@Codename Lisa: If you tell me the page name, I'll sort it out when I get home (ca. 8pm UK)Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:14, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
Found it, from your contributions...   Done Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:17, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Sorry for not including a link. It seems I am somehow in the same mindset with which I contact Oversight.
Still, you can always find it by searching for "Special:Diff/<revision number>". Of course, I use Firefox and have assigned "en" to the English Wikipedia URL, so I type "en Special:Diff/824271701" in the address bar and ... I am there! :) (Oh, no. I just remembered who thought me this trick and the feeling of guilt is back again. Damn!)
Best regards,

Your upload summaries for NFCC SVG reductions

They've got redlinks in 'em. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:25, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

@AntiCompositeNumber: Can't fix it. The script that allows direct editing of an svg file is not on en-wiki (see last line of User:Ronhjones/common.js), the script adds those links, and it's obviously assuming that the script is being used on commons. User:Rillke has not been active on commons for almost 2 years, and I don't wish to tinker with such a complex script.Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:39, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Ogri-esque

This keeps turning up and staring me in the face. I've been after a head-on shot of this bike with rider helmet-less (quite a well known machine and rider) for about 10 years since I didn't save it at the time, then I encountered this view used in a self-published book of anecdotes fairly recently. There's a slightly bigger image at Amazon that I can't link to. This appears to be circa 1962, I have a seriously updated version in a 1964 mag, then there's another 1966 (same publication) that's on me 'wish list'. It's called Vin/Nor, with the legend on the tank as a jagged lightning-bolt (where I have used a slash). Can't find anything like a lightning bolt in formatting. --Rocknrollmancer (talk) 15:45, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

Ah Clip-ons! How to trap your thumbs! Mixed bikes, a blast from the past - knew someone who has a Triton, also someone who had a Bitsa (mainly BSA with lots of other bits). Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:15, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
I used to work for a millionaire who had several cars for different purposes - hot hatch for shopping/dog walking in the woods/leave at the pub when well-fuelled, long distance cruiser, classic car, sports job. A couple of Lotus Elans (60s/70s Ford engine based) - collector's pieces, they were known as. Go for a drive, then go back to collect the pieces.......Rocknrollmancer (talk) 17:31, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
