Proposed deletion of Bluestone River (disambiguation)

The article Bluestone River (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unnecessary disambiguation page per WP:TWODABS. A hatnote is sufficient for those looking for the minor topic.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Tavix (talk) 22:22, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Alright, I'll deal with it via G7. Happy editing, -- Tavix (talk) 22:28, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Please support the Sustainability Initiative!

Hi, Rosiestep! Please allow me to follow up on a project that was discussed at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin a couple of weeks ago:

I am writing you to ask for your support for the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 250 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has recently passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Now, we are working with the Wikimedia Foundation staff to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

In order to demonstrate that this is an issue that the community really cares about, I would like to ask you to sign the project page as well. Thank you! --Gnom (talk) 19:05, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

A possible new article?

Hi Rosie, saw this a while back: Joyce Tischler, founder of the Animal Legal Defense Fund, called the "mother" of animal law. Sounds like an interesting lady, but this link has been languishing in my "lookit this" pile for a month and a half and I haven't gotten around to doing further research, so thought that maybe with our access to sources at your fingertips, you might be able to determine if she meets notability and is worth an article. Ping me if you start on something, I'll try to lend a hand if I can... Montanabw(talk) 23:07, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

Montanabw, yes, will look at this. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:24, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
@Montanabw:, Rosiestep, I'll take a look, too. Sounds interesting! Is there a draft yet? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:44, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Emma Burke Collins - Mrs. E. Burke Collins - Emma Augusta Sharkey

I moved it because of naming conventions; including the title "Mrs" - especially with a full stop after it - is just asking for trouble. If you want people to find the article, you need to avoid this where possible. I left a redirect and it needs quite a few more as she seems to have been known by a whole lot of different names; you might want to consider that. I also included her date of death and a reference for it, so as to complete the article.Deb (talk) 08:20, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

PS. Mrs Gaskell and Mrs Craik are good precedents. Deb (talk) 08:30, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Hi Deb. Ok. I see the problem with the "Mrs.", which is part of the pseudonym. In the meantime, I reached out to Megalibrarygirl to see if she could find a VIAF (I couldn't) or other authority control. I'll wait to hear from her as I don't want to move the article to something like "Emma Augusta Browne Sharkey" if an authority control refers to her as Emma Augusta Sharkey or something else. Anyway, I appreciate your help. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:52, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Just dawned on me... I created Mary Simmerson Cunningham Logan not so long ago, instead of "Mrs. John A. Logan" her pseudonym. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:58, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Good - I think it's a great project you're involved in, by the way. Deb (talk) 16:08, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
So far my research into this has turned up the fact that there is no authority control via Worldcat. VIAF is dependent on Worldcat. It looks like we may need a cataloger to create a record, but I may have a contact there, too. Just wanted to update you! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:59, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, Megalibrarygirl. In the meantime, I moved her to Emma Augusta Sharkey, which matches up with the Willard & Livermore entry. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:08, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
Can I delete Emma August Sharkey now? Deb (talk) 11:37, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Yes, and thanks, Deb. It was such a blooper on my part, and I was dealing with double redirects so I figured I wouldn't mess with it at that moment. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:22, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

May and June

WiR priorities for May

Hi Rosie. My call for feedback for May on the ideas page seems to have petered out. There is clear support for "Organizations and conferences" but the rest is rather confused. As participation in April has been rather disappointing, we might be able to revive interest by having our very first editathon on "Women in sports" (maybe with some emphasis on the historical side). As for the geo focus, we could extend the American emphasis on the American Asian Pacific Heritage to women Pacific islanders of all nationalities and ethnic origins. Let me know if you think we should go forward on this basis and I'll start working on the editathon pages, invitations, templates, etc.--Ipigott (talk) 11:40, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Ipigott - Agree with these three: (a) orgs+conferences, (b) "women in sports", and (c) supporting Asian/Pacific Heritage Month. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:10, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
OK. I'll try to take of it all by tomorrow evening.--Ipigott (talk) 14:02, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
@Ipigott, Victuallers, SusunW, and Megalibrarygirl - Aside from us, is there anyone else available at the end of each month to do this repetitive heavy-lifting (creating the meetup pages, creating the invites, MassMessaging the invites)? --Rosiestep (talk) 17:56, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
@Ipigott, Victuallers, SusunW, and Rosiestep If you'd like, I can take over doing the Meetup pages from now on so Ipigott doesn't have to do it all the time. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:18, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
I'll be happy to help in any way that I can, but I don't have the technical expertise to take the lead on it. My circle on WP is fairly small and I don't really know of anyone else with those skills. Sue, you rock! I am sure Rosey and Ian will be happy to have your help. SusunW (talk) 18:22, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Megalibrarygirl: That's a wonderful offer. It will allow me to spend more time on content editing. But I think we should share it, this month for you, the next month for me and so on. If you can prepare the draft editathon pages and the invitations, I'll update the mass mailing list with any new WiR members and also prepare lists of additional WikiProjects and editators to be invited, especially those for sports. If you run into any problems, please let me know. As for red links, in addition to the crowd-sourced page on sports, we have Wikidata lists on a wide variety of sports and virtually all the Wikidata lists by nationality contain lots of sportswomen. The crowd-sourced list of Organizations is coming along quite well but I don't think we have anything specific on conferences. Perhaps with SusunW's help you could start a list of red links. I would be happy to chip in too. As for the Pacific islands, I'm not sure whether Wikidata lists will be of much help as the nationality of the inhabitants is probably listed as American, French, or whatever.--Ipigott (talk) 07:02, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
I'll be happy to work on red lists. THAT I can do. I've been adding organizations as I have worked on CEE women this month, but I can work on conferences too. Maybe the easiest way is to peruse articles I have written in the past, as so many mention those types of things. SusunW (talk) 15:36, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
  • @Megalibrarygirl, Rosiestep, Victuallers, LauraHale, and SusunW: I've started a list on sports editathon invitations which lists WikiProjects and individual editors who should receive invitations in addition to those on the main mass messaging list (which I've updated). If you know of any other keen sports enthusiasts, please add them to the list (if possible in alpha order as it makes cross checking easier. Once the invitation for May is ready, I'll send it out to these too. Or maybe I'll put together one specifically for women in sports.--Ipigott (talk) 15:44, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
@Megalibrarygirl, Rosiestep, Victuallers, LauraHale, SusunW, Ipigott, Pharos, and Another Believer If we are going to take turns on creating Meetup pages, I just need to know who is going to do what and when. I'm a very ADHD person in some ways, so if I don't write everything down and have it on a schedule, I'll screw it up and forget. As long as I know what I'm responsible for, I'm happy to do it. I really don't mind doing the draft pages at all. They're pretty easy to cobble together and I'd like to take some more work off of the shoulders of people here who do a lot of gnoming. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:53, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
The May ones are #42, #43, and #44; they are redlinked here: Template:Women in Red. Thanks, Megalibrarygirl. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:00, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Location and language issues make things tricky for me to be involved with organizing things. :/ I can put people in touch with Australians who have organized several Paralympic related edit-a-thons in Australia before. I've been debating seeing about running a workshop on how to use wikidata's query engine, but that wouldn't happen until mid to late May at the earliest. --LauraHale (talk) 19:35, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
LauraHale, if you ever decide to facilitate a "Wikidata query engine virtual training for dummies", count me in. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:00, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
@Rosiestep:, I'd need to create the materials for it. The documentation isn't that good and a lot of it starts from the point of view of how to edit Wikidata. In any case, it would probably be on one of the Wikimujeres Monday meetings at MediaLab Prado in Madrid. Still figuring out how to master some of these things, because the query engine can do strange things. I can get some really nice queries though. :) Just limitations at times with how the engine works. Timeouts are an issue. --LauraHale (talk) 08:19, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
LauraHale - thanks for the follow-up and no worries! I didn't know how involved you were with the Wikidata world, and if you taught classes in it, etc. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 08:29, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
Rosiestep, More along the lines of doing a project using the underlying software. As a consequence, I've learned a huge amount about the query engine and some other aspects of Wikidata. Understanding the power of that aspect is huge, because you can then do large volumes of interesting research about women's related topics if you can master the query engine and know what data is in there. --LauraHale (talk) 09:02, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

WiR priorities for June

@Pharos and Another Believer, as you can see, we are trying to distribute the events' planning workload. So if you have time/inclination to create June's Met and Pride meetup pages, that would be very appreciated. The redlinks for their meetup pages are here: Template:Women in Red. If you don't like the yellow sidebar boxes, you don't have to use them; e.g. the info can be placed into a section as in older meetup pages. If you have any snazzy ideas on how you'd like to develop the meetup page, please feel empowered to just GO FOR IT! We're in it together... all ideas are welcome... we don't want to be stagnant. If you have questions, I/we would be glad to help! --Rosiestep (talk) 16:16, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Do you mean help recreating a version of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/16 for the Wiki Loves Pride campaign? I'll try to track down what meetup number this would be for WiR. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:19, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
@Megalibrarygirl: I don't mean to punt responsibilities, but would you like to take a stab at creating the meetup page for June/Pride/WikiLovesPride? You put the cannabis page together so quickly. If you have too many things going on, or are uninterested, I'll see what I can do soon. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:30, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Another Believer, yes... recreate the 2016 event, Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/16, using this 2017 redlink: Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/46. Thanks! --Rosiestep (talk) 18:11, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
OK, thanks for confirming. I'll create a stub page with an under construction template for now. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:47, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
@Another Believer: Sorry I missed this. :( Megalibrarygirl (talk) 15:55, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
@Megalibrarygirl: No worries! The page still needs expansion, but at least we have a designated space now. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:49, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Invitation

Thank you for your contributions to articles about women on Wikipedia. I thought I'd let you know about the women's football/soccer task force, a collaborative effort to improve Wikipedia's coverage of women's football/soccer (WOSO). If you would like to participate, join by visiting the Members page. Thanks!

@Hmlarson: Thanks for this invitation. We hope you and your friends will also be helping us to change red links into blue. You will shortly be receiving an invitation to our online editathon which you are encouraged to send to members of your WikiProject and any other editors you think may be interested. It's great to have your support.--Ipigott (talk) 07:16, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Ipigott - that is essentially a huge majority of what we do (making women blue) + we've integrated a bit of the WIR and WP:WOMEN projects throughout the task force. The taskforce is subscribed to the WIR notices via the Taskforce talk page to be automatically shared with the group and has been for a number of months.
I invite you and others to ❤ the Taskforce talk page as well as Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women's sport to help strengthen support for articles related to women athletes. The notability guidelines for many sports (including most definitely football/soccer) exclude a lot of women. Only 2 active top-division football/soccer leagues in the world (in addition to players who play for their national teams) are included by WP:NFOOTY - so we rely heavily on WP:GNG for player articles. The list of top-tier leagues across the world can be seen here to better understand the huge discrepancy. In fact, many of the players found here Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by occupation/Footballers would not be included under long-standing FOOTY guidelines. I've often thought of working to expand WP:Women's sport to include notability guidelines for women athletes. Any feedback or suggestions are most welcome. Hmlarson (talk) 16:46, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
There has to be a way to automate getting a list of potential sources from news sources, and then creating lists for red linked articles that people can use to start stubs. Does the Women in Red project have a slack channel or IRC to brain storm some on that issue? --LauraHale (talk) 18:09, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
No, but we should have one! I love Slack and I know other WiR folks do, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:18, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
If some one creates a slack channel, that would be awesome. I created a list last night of articles from Wikidata that said more than one language but not Engish using the query instance of human with sex or gender female and occupation sportsperson with no article on English Wikipedia. I could probably figure out some way to bulk create lists of potential sources using SEO tools, but not as familiar with those as I was 5 years ago. That would be the easiest, using domains for newspapers. (There should be a way in theory to pull results from Google Docs, using ImportXL on spreadsheets, but I can't recall the code to get the url and title based on Google search. Once done though, I could probably easily create a few bulk lists of sources. --LauraHale (talk) 06:31, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
@LauraHale, Montanabw, SusunW, and Megalibrarygirl - I can't take on one more thing at the moment, e.g. starting up a Slack, but if this group likes the idea and creates one, I will participate. And Laura, what you just said above re query sounds really good, except it's over my head. :) P.S. I love Slack. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:19, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
I like Rosie am totally boggled with technologies intricacies. I use it, but don't create and hardware gives me a headache. I have no idea what a slack channel is, how to create one, etc. As a researcher, I am usually pretty good at finding multiple sources by backing into topics from employers, school affiliations and family members, but bulk resources I have no idea about. SusunW (talk) 14:41, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Some help?

Rosiestep, I know you appreciate the creation of Sidney C. Wolff, by User:V00d00Child, a student in my Freshman Comp class. Obviously we have to get this woman on the front page--do you have any suggestions to offer for the article? Keilana, feel free to weigh in! Dr Aaij (talk) 03:47, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Dr Aaij, and thanks for reaching out. SCW is a very interesting woman! Tell your student, "good job!" from me. And yes, the article should be nominated at DYK (within first 5 days). Before then, some suggestions:
  • change "Dr. Wolff" → "Wolff"
  • "... is the oldest of her brother and sister" → "... has two younger siblings" or "has a younger brother and sister".
  • add DOB in parens immediately after her name in first sentence.
  • add wikilinks for all the cities, schools, and any people who don't have a wl.
  • There are 2 paragraphs which start with an asterisk; rmv asterisk.
  • Re images: rmv the panorama. Img captions should indicate how she is associated with the img, e.g. this is good: "The WIYN observatory on Kitt Peak is renowned and partly developed by Dr. Wolff." (except, rmv "Dr.")
  • Add categories, e.g. 1941 births; People from Sioux City, Iowa; all the alumni ones
  • I tell editors to write articles in a way that will make sense for a grandmother in Africa. So, "...UC Santa Cruz and Berkeley..." won't make sense to grandma; spell them out.
  • "Though she also debated a major in Latin..." → "Though she considered a major in Latin..."
  • Split up the "Publications and awards" section.
  • I am not keen on 1 sentence paragraphs.
  • Add DEFAULTSORT immediately above first cat; add {{Authority control}} above DEFAULTSORT.
  • Add cats: American non-fiction writers; 20th-/21st-century women writers; writers from Iowa.
  • Richard James Wolff = husband. Her maiden name was Sidney Carne. Add née Sidney Carne before date of birth within parens in lede sentence. Change "Dr. Sidney Carne Wolff was born..." → "Sidney Carne was born..." Also add info about parents[1][2]
  • Lead paragraph should immediately establish WP:N to avoid a trip to AfD. I like the first sentence to read something like this: "Sidney C. Wolff is an American astrophysicist, researcher, public educator, author, emeritus(huh?), from Iowa. She blah blah blah." This info re Wolff in the Carlton article is spot on "... first woman to serve as director of a major U.S. observatory and to have led the construction of six premier telescopes." Incorporate it! If your student can't sort out how to reword, she can put it in quotes. Either of these would be good DYK hook options; I'd suggest both.
That's all I can think of for now, but pagestalkers (@Megalibrarygirl, Montanabw, and SusunW) might have additional thoughts. If your student needs any assistance with the DYK nomination, re-ping me. Hope this student keeps editing!! --Rosiestep (talk) 08:05, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
@Dr Aaij and V00d00Child: great job! I created the data entry and added VIAF and INSI. Also created the talk pages to tie it to interested WikiProjects. I agree with Rosie's notes. Also, if you are going to nominate it for DYK, they will require that each section have at least one citation to a reliable source. I see several unsourced paragraphs, which should have an in-line citation. But, overall really nice new article. SusunW (talk) 13:59, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
@Dr Aaij and V00d00Child:, I'll see if I can find the citations the article is missing later today. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 15:49, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
@Dr Aaij and V00d00Child: - I see a lot of improvements in the article in the last couple of days; good job! I added some wikilinks and tweaked some of the wording. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:52, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Rosie, and you too, Megalibrarygirl and Susun. I also hope she stays around. She just got an A+ on her final (reflective) essay. Dr Aaij (talk) 18:19, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
Thank you all for the feedback which has definitely been a helpful conditioning experience for encyclopedic writing. If there's anything else I could improve, I would definitely appreciate and respond to any advice. V00d00Child (talk) 15:05, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

WiR May invitation

With Megalibrarygirl's assistance, we now have three editathon pages for May. Maybe you want to add the meetup numbers to the headings on each page as suggested for the templates but I would prefer to leave them as they are. I have nevertheless used the meetup numbers for each of the talk page templates. You'll find the invitation at the bottom of Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Outreach/2017 in case you want to make any changes. Please send it out to our mass messaging list. I'll send it to the list I've put together on potential participants for sports. Let me know if you also want me to send it to the international list.

Translating Ibero-America is back! Come and join us :)

Dear Rosiestep,
Hope this message finds you well!
Again this year 2017 the Iberocoop network is launching the editing contest "Translating Ibero-American" aiming to position the Ibero-american culture outside our borders :)
You can find the contest page here
We hope you can join us!
Hugs--Anna Torres (WMAR) (talk) 20:02, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

@SusunW, Megalibrarygirl, Montanabw, and Ipigott: - I told Anna that our June calendar had already started, but I'm having second thoughts about that answer. If you feel inclined to adding another event for June, please add this one. I'm traveling for this event in Washington DC (we have almost 100 people signed up so wish me luck!) so I'm not able to coordinate a Women in Red version of "Translating Ibero-American" event myself. No worries if you don't have time or inclination. (cc: Anna Torres (WMAR)) --Rosiestep (talk) 12:41, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Now that we are already immersed in our three June priorities, I think we should keep things as they are. We can of course take Anna's contest into account by covering women from the Spanish and Portuguese wikis in connection with our pre-20th century focus. To help things along, I'll include an announcement on our main page. As for DC, it looks as if it's just the time to concentrate on media and politics. Good luck!--Ipigott (talk) 13:04, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
I agree that we are already pretty booked, maybe its just because all 3 topics this month interest me and I am having to divide my time already too much. I think we might reach out to them in September when we do Latinas, though. SusunW (talk) 13:10, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Dear all, Thanks always for your support :) If your are pretty booked please don't worry! We can think in organizing something together. I have some ideas ;) We can set up a call and talk :) Hugs and thanks!--Anna Torres (WMAR) (talk) 13:36, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Anna Torres (WMAR): The very fact that so many of us have now seen this thread should encourage participation in your contest. Please keep us posted on progress and outcomes. While I'm here, may I suggest that in future, when addressing the EN wiki, you replace "Ibero-American" with "Latin-American" which is in common use in English and therefore widely understood. Apart from Wikipedia's own articles and discussions on Ibero-America (all based on Spanish sources), I have never seen the term used in English-language publications. See, for example: [5].--Ipigott (talk) 09:45, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

HI from Carla

Hi CarlaHiggins2017 (talk) 17:57, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Congratulations...

...on your ten years of Wikipediatrics! I did one or two little things from April 2006 onwards, but didn't really get hooked until February 2010. This guy would have been two when you started! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe6H1a1IK2g Best wishes, Brian Bmcln1 (talk) 15:06, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

St Charles Hotel

Cool building! Opposite St. Charles Museum, New Orleans, which is also missing, don't know if you can find anything on that!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:05, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld: Glad to see you're up and running again!--Ipigott (talk) 06:57, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, Dr. Blofeld. Jump in! It could certainly be improved. I stumbled upon St. Charles Hotel, New Orleans after writing, Lucy Virginia French, which mentioned the hotel, and, of course, that intrigued me as there was no wiki article but tons of pics on Commons. I'll check out the museum. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:17, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
