MediaLens

edit

MediaLens is a liberal news watch website, much like NewsBusters is a conservative news watch website. Niether of these sources would be appropriate under WP:RS. Isaac Pankonin 02:39, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

This should be put up for discussion before any deletions are done. I see nothing wrong in MediaLens at all. Thanks. SDas 02:50, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia encourages editors to be BOLD. You are not the OWNER of the page, and I do not need to consult with you before I edit anything. However, since we have discovered that we disagree, now is the appropriate time for discussion. Tell me why you think MediaLens should be allowed. Isaac Pankonin 03:48, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Neither of us owns the article, so this discussion should be carried out in the relevant article's talk pages, so that others can participate too in the discussion. SDas 04:02, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Indonesian...

edit

Hello there - thanks for your good work on the encyclopedia. In future, could you please use the term "Indonesian", rather than "Bahasa", - ie Indonesian is the correct English word for the Indonesian language which in Indonesian is known as "Bahasa Indonesia". The word 'bahasa' simply means 'language' - ie, bahasa inggris = English, and bahasa jerman = German, etc, etc. Any questions please let me know. kind regards --Merbabu 14:24, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:VedantaUnivOrissaAdvt.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:VedantaUnivOrissaAdvt.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 20:33, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comments

edit

Thanks for your patient and well thought out discussion over at the Religiosity and intelligence talk page. As requested, I will not make major deletions without discussing them to the point of consensus and copying them to the talk pages in the next few months. Here is a shortcut to the page as it stands for your future reference. (I have made what I think are non contentious additions today). [1]
BTW, I'm hoping the article gains more references, rather than loses more in future, and will appreciate your reasoned critique in due course.

  • Re: speedy: 1/ You seem to have been around long enough to know that if notability is asserted, speedy is inappropriate. It is not necessary that notability has been shown, the assertion is enough to invalidate speedy. 2/ There is no evidence that Tikoo_s is related to the subject of this article. I should also warn you that "outing" an editor is a blockable offense. As long as Tikoo_s does not reveal his/her identity, you shouldn't do so either. 3/ Even if we assume there is a COI, that is not a reason to delete, just a reason to scrutinize an article for POV. Nothing less, nothing more.
If you think this article does not meet W:N or WP:ACADEMIC, you should propose it for AfD, because I will remove a PROD tag, too. --Crusio (talk) 15:27, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Crusio, I am not outing an editor. That he most likely the son of R. P. Mohapatra was discovered by (as I recall) a user in Dec 2007, (I think Fconaway), based on links provided by tikoo S himself and a simple google search, showing a matching last name Mohapatra (which BTW is very uncommon).
Tikoo S has added cites to unknown works of R. P. Mohapatra to many different articles, such as Bhubaneswar, Kharavela, Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, Lingaraj Temple, Parsurameswar Temple, Kalinga War.
The references are to non-peer reviewed articles, some dating back to the 80s. Frankly it is a headache to meticulously go through the articles, and remove the links.
You should know better - you are the editor of a journal yourself, and I am sure also an accomplished academic. Does a few dozen insignificant research papers, and some books published by unknown publishers qualify the person to be an encyclopedic entry? Memorial lectures can be be made through relatively small donations. This is a lot simpler in Orissa than in the USA or France because of PPP.
I am an academic myself, and as I am also from Orissa, I can easily see what is going on. Nevertheless, I am not saying that the article on R. P. Mohapatra be necessarily deleted. Can't one at least discuss that option?
Lastly, my main concern is removing the irrelevant citations from a dozen or so wikipedia entries. There are 100s of more relevant, more recent, and better scholarly papers that can be cited in each of those articles.
Please advise me what to do.
Thanks,

SDas (talk) 16:16, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I'm not saying Mohapatra is necessarily notable, I am not an archeologist. Also, the article is far from good and there is still a lot of fluff (much has already been removed, Tikoo_s certainly has been willing to listen to advice). But the article asserts notability, so speedy is inappropriate. With all the sources provided, I feel PROD would not be suitable either. Given how strongly you feel about this, I suggest that you take this to AfD, present your arguments as unemotional as possible, and see where the discussion goes. Deletion therefore is certainly possible and most certainly can be discussed, but Ijust think that the correct place for that is AfD, not speedy or PROD. As for the argument that there are better references of other articles, feel free to add those better references. As for the fact that their are more notable figures without an article, that is not really an argument per OTHERSTUFF. Should AfD determine that he's notable, then you should get going creating areticles for those other people! :-) Hope this clarifies. Happy editing! --Crusio (talk) 10:10, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Student Life at Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar

edit

The article Student Life at Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unencyclopedic article lacking sources. Should be redirected to Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Student Life at IIT Bhubaneswar

edit

This policy page details why the existence of an article cannot be used to justify keeping a similar article. It may well be that the other article needs attention or eve deletion, but simply hasn't been tended to because of the sheer volume of work for Wikipedia volunteers. I really think your subject would be best served as a section of the main article about the institute, via a redirect. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 04:09, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

It has long been established policy that US universities and colleges have separate article devoted to their athletic programs, since they are covered extensively by the news media and are therefore notable. As for smaller organizations and/or events connected to Indian schools that have their own pages: if you feel that any of those are not suitable for separate articles, you may also propose that they be redirected or even deleted. My only advice to you concerning this article is to defend it in the AfD discussion. (I personally will not vote on this matter either way.) Good luck to you. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 04:23, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello SDas! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 178 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag.
