File permission problem with File:Aboriginal Anticipation (Oz 36) 1989 Oil on Paper 37cm x 38cm.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Aboriginal Anticipation (Oz 36) 1989 Oil on Paper 37cm x 38cm.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:36, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

What is all this about??
Why the quasi-legal jargon and labrynthine structure?
Question - Is Wikipedia a simple and user-friendly tool for informing the world, for disseminating information?
Answer - NO!!
All I want to do is make a little harmless article about a living Artist, an 85-year old man who has been struggling all his life and who is, like so many of his generation, unable to grasp the concepts of the Internet. I am a little younger and appreciate that Wikipedia might represent a possible first step to getting a little information out to the world about this man who many people agree will be considered as a major and influential artist when he is 'discovered' (for that, sadly, read 'deceased'). I am finding the process of putting together and publishing a small and informative article on this man almost impossible. As a pretty old man with little trust or belief in most things new and technological, the negative aspects of trying to get this done seems to be proving his point of view to be true. He says, "It's not really what it purports to be, is it?" I am pretty much in agreement so far, my experience with Wikipedia is one of extreme frustration and exasperation.
I would appreciate a little help here with what I COULD do All I seem to be getting is what I CAN'T do.......................... SJ Butcher (talk) 12:53, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi, erm, This , that and the other...........
I have no idea how this works [along with most of the rest of Wikipedia] so I'm merrily typing here and haven't a clue whether anyone else will get it - or how to send it. Could be a perennial comment from me, that one?
I am wanting to make an entry about an Artist (living), a brief bio, a few details and a few quotes made by the Artist to me. I work for him on a voluntary basis (we are old colleagues) and have catalogued his life's work via a database and a HUGE number of photographs which he has given me specific permission to use in The Public Domain - a Website will be the next logical step but I have promised him (he's 85 today) that I'll get a Wikipedia entry up and running during this year. Being a Visual Artist, I would like to include some examples of his work and have uploaded them but have gotten immediate messages that I can't.
At present, I have the (Finished, I think) basis of the article in my "Sandbox" but haven't a clue how to proceed from here, I don't find any of the so-called "Help" articles of much use, to be honest: I think that the whole thing, despite being apparently formulated to be used by ordinary folk, is too technical and inaccessible unless you are VERY I.T. savvy. I'm not. I'd appreciate a little help here from someone who knows how to..........
Many thanks Steve Butcher (stvbutcher@gmail.com) SJ Butcher (talk) 09:56, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, Steve. I found myself on this page after a few clicks, and thought I would give you some help.
- Firstly, wish your friend a very happy birthday from me, and wish him many more to come. :)
- Secondly, yes, for some, Wikipedia might seem a very large and <ahem> unfriendly place, but actually, we're a large community who're ready to help each other out. [I was one of those people, and after a few edits, I gave up. I cleared out and went to Wikisource, where I've happily settled in.]
- Thirdly, re the article, you just need to
- a. Ask another user for help. (That's what you've done.)
- b. Create it yourself. What is the name of the article? If, as you've given in your sandbox, it's Anthony Ewart Curtis, you can just click on the red link here and start it up. More likely than not, someone will come and expand it, with cleanup thrown in for free. :)
- However, that's only the start. As you might've noticed, all information in Wikipedia articles are referenced from outside sources. That means that you have to provide sources for the information you have got. In most cases, this means sources which can be accessed by most people, which includes books and websites. As far as I can see, it doesn't include information which is given by the person in question himself, which is a little silly, I know , but necessary so that other users can access the sources you've provided. In most cases, you can just do a google search and get as much info as you need.
- Fourthly, re the images which ShakespeareFan and ALH have tagged as needing copyright information, well, that's another long story. According to Wikimedia policy, all images which can be used freely are to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. If they're not free-use, but fair-use, then they're to be uploaded to the corresponding language wiki. Here, they're released into the public domain by the author. So they should be uploaded to Commons.
- However, if you're not the author, then Wikipedia can't say for certain whether the author has really released it under such-and-such license for sure. That's where OTRS comes in. With OTRS, the fact that the author has really released it under a free license can be verified. You can ask the author to send an email to you stating that the content has really been released under such and such license. Then you can forward this mail to Commons at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. That's only what I understand it to be, you can read the actual thing at the Commons link to OTRS which I've included here.
- Hope I've explained it all fully. However, on second thoughts, this reply seems a little ambiguous to me. :) If you have any doubts, you can either ask someone else (try Billinghurst (talk) — they're an admin here and on Commons, not to mention Wikisource and Meta-wiki, and will be able to explain better than me.), or you can reach me on my talk page at Wikisource. I don't usually check my talk page here, so ask there. All the best,—Clockery Fairfield (talk | WS) 12:55, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- I also forgot to mention — check out the Article Wizard. I haven't heard of it before, so I guess it's a new page. Or I'm behind the times. —Clockery Fairfield (talk | WS) 08:36, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Hi Clockery
Thanks for your help & advice It's good to hear from a human being, especially one who doesn't just hide behind disembodied mumbo jumbo that merely seems to reinforce the message, "YOU CAN'T - because we're exclusive and we have the power!!" However, I still really haven't a clue as to how to proceed with my intended article, it seems the whole of Wikipedia is not really designed to encourage new users, rather it seems to empower those who are not from the same mould as the man from Del Monte. I am currently attempting to get an 85 year old man to give the appropriate permissions to a meaningless and dimly-lit organisation to use images owned by him, given freely to me to use in The Public Domain as it were: that task, I hope, will represent some sort of a start and will be some achievement in itself. It seems, from what you say, that others can read my "Sandbox" and I get the impression from what you say that I can't put anything "original" into the Wikipedia article, suggesting that the whole of Wikipedia must therefore be a Plagiarist's Paradise. This man has intentionally stayed away from the limelight, has basically nothing published about him - he has 2 works of Art shown on the RWA website (he is a member and they own the pieces in permanent collections) and the only other things that I can find are his London Agent's Website and that of another gallery that has some work for sale...... other than that there is pretty much nothing. So, how can I make an article based on the premise which you outline, namely that Wikipedia articles are simply a regurgitation of what already exists in print elsewhere or in other places on the Internet?
But thank you for your advice - I am not criticising you!! I am amazed and surprised that the place where I thought would be the best to start with writing about this man is, it seems, the very place to NOT do it?
And, therefore the message from 'the powers that be' is amazingly successful..........
Thanks for your time, it's appreciated: where I can go from here I really am not sure now
Yours very disappointedly Steve Butcher stvbutcher@gmail.com

- Wikipedia:Notability is the test that is applied on whether we can write an article about a person. If you are wishing to upload photographs of a person, then ideally the better place for them is Commons: (shared repository for images). The permissions for photographs to be put into the public domain needs to be from the photographer, not the subject of the photograph. You can find out more about copyright at Commons:Licensing, and the permissions process at OTRS. I have stuck some links to the general welcome message with help. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:23, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
