Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto

Hello. I am writing here in response to your email, in which you asked for help concerning edits to Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto. You refer to events in May 2011 when another editor removed content from the article with the edit summary 'Rmv promotional language', and I restored the content, saying 'I don't see the "promotional language"'. That case seemed to me quite clear cut: I really could not see any basis for seeing it as promotional at all. The present case, however, seems to me more complex, with different considerations applying to different parts of the removed content. I will go through some of the issues.

1. The link at the top of the "History" section to "main articles" was simply wrong: there are no such articles, so clearly it was right to remove that link.
2. The problem with the paragraph about the renaming of the festival following a ruling of the Ontario Superior Court Of Justice seems to be that no sources are provided for verification. Personally, I would have been willing to take your word for that, and would not have challenged the information. However, the way Wikipedia works, where anyone can post anything they like (and unfortunately many people do post stuff which is totally untrue) it is essential to have some sort of check. The way we apply that check is to have a policy that if anyone challenges content then it must not be included unless reliable sources can be provided to verify that content. The page you linked to at http://caribflyer.com/carib/it%E2%80%99s-no-longer-caribana-festival-unveils-its-new-name%20no-longer-caribana-festival-unveils-its-new-name%5D/ redirects to the main page at http://caribflyer.com/carib/. However, a little searching produced http://caribflyer.com/carib/it%E2%80%99s-no-longer-caribana-festival-unveils-its-new-name/, which is probably what you wanted. I have restored a version of the paragraph, together with a reference to that source. I have substantially edited the paragraph, making what I hope are improvements to its sentence structure, and removing some redundant information. I hope that will enable the material to be kept.
3. I don't see any objection to the paragraph on "Themes", except perhaps that you provided no sources. You could try restoring it with one or more sources, and if that is still challenged you could try asking why, on the article's talk page or the talk page of the editor who challenges it.
4. It is difficult to see any purpose in including the link to http://carib101.com other than promotion. I doubt that doing so can be justified in terms of Wikipedia's guidelines on external links.
5. The section "Events" and the link to http://torontocaribbeancarnival.com/pdf/2011/2011%20Mas%20Bands%20Information-PUBLIC.pdf looked to me as if they were there more for advertising purposes than to supplement the encyclopaedia article. Lists like that are more the sort of thing I would look for from the web site of an organisation if I wanted to attend the event than the sort of thing I would expect to find in an encyclopaedia.
6. It is clear that you have a close involvement with the carnival. As such, you should be very careful in editing about it, as you will have a conflict of interest. Even if you do not intend to edit in a promotional manner, it may be difficult for you to stand back and see how your editing will look from the detached perspective of an uninvolved outsider.
