Cornell Greeks

Hi Sam. Clearly you spent some time constructing the table for the fraternities at Cornell. I'd judge it a worthy experiment. Nevertheless, I don't think it is an improvement. Here, sortability is over-emphasized as the driver for the change. Another editor had mentioned this as a possible change over a year ago and I'm glad to now see it. I'll gather a couple of other opinions, but the much longer format (versus the succinct style of the previous list) is jarring, and when extended to the dormant chapters and those whose names have changed, will make this article far too lengthy. Hi Jax, thanks for your message. I appreciate all the work you've put in for that page and across Wikipedia.

Here is my reasoning for the change. I find the table view is easier to parse, especially at a glance. It more clearly associates information with each organization with clear separation, as opposed to the previous compact view where it is difficult to see which symbols are associated with which fraternities. Some of the names overlapped and flowed onto the next line, increasing visual complexity. Additionally, the table is sortable. There has been some discussion in the talk page about whether to sort by name or founding date; the table allows users to sort whichever way they please. I also find the table to be more mobile-friendly compared to the old layout. Finally, it easier to edit for future editors. The old template is difficult to work with, while the table makes it simple to remove and add fraternities as needed. I noticed several fraternities had out-of-date information and I hope the ease-of-use of the table will encourage more timely updates in the future.

That being said, I agree it takes up more space than before. I have considered two ideas to mitigate this: merging the Notes and References columns (I went back and forth on this, deciding to list them separately for now), and extending the horizontal size of the table to avoid multi-line rows. I am not 100% familiar with the layout tools on Wikipedia and didn't want to damage anything else on the page attempting to make that change.

I do not think every list included in the article should be converted to a table view, but for the most commonly-accessed ones, I think this serves as an improvement.

Overall, in my opinion, the benefits of the table view outweigh the costs. Please let me know what you think. Samfriedmann (talk) 02:32, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

I'm mulling it over; you make some very compelling points. I have to put aside my natural bias as the one who originated the earlier format. I regularly use tables for all sorts of other GLO pages, but have resisted them in campus lists of all Greeks. Long day... I'll see what I might come up with regarding formatting the table.
