Wicked (musical)/Jon Corzine/WikiProject Chicago

Please do not allow the bot to re-tag the article for Wicked with the WPChi tag. I understand that, while the article is in Category:Chicago musicals, the bot will tag the article. Several editors at the article object to this action. Editors shouldn't have to do anything to counteract the actions of a bot. It is the bot owner's responsibility to ensure that the bot edits along the lines of consensus. Consensus has shown that the article does not belong under that particular WikiProject's purview.
I've seen your responses to some of the editors at Jon Corzine: basically, "Talk to the WikiProject and have them remove the category from the bot's run." The WikiProject can, in turn, say, "We want to tag the articles in this category; talk to the guy who runs the bot," passing the buck ad infinitum.
It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that the bot no longer tags either of these articles. I'm STUNNED that the WPChi tag is still on Corzine's article -- four months later! Strong objections to the tag have been raised at both articles.
I think the bot does a lot of good for the project, but if the bot can't edit with consensus, I'll have it blocked. —  MusicMaker5376 02:51, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Again, it is not the responsibility of other editors to ensure that your bot edits according to consensus. I shouldn't have to recategorize the article. I shouldn't have to place a tag that will repel all bots.
Find a way to exclude single articles. —  MusicMaker5376 13:44, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Believe me, I understand the concerns. However, what if WikiProject Musical Theatre chooses to utalize SatyrBot in the future? Like I said, I think the bot does a bit of good for the project, and I can see its utility. Can the no bots tag be modified to spurn the bot's actions for a single WP? Something like {{bot|deny=SatyrBot|project=Chicago}}? Or, perhaps, a tag recognized only by SatyrBot? —  MusicMaker5376 14:30, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Reposted here 'cause I don't know if you're watching my page. —  MusicMaker5376 19:59, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Does the bot care if an existing tag is inside a comment or not? A way to defeat my bot is to place the offending tag inside an HTML comment; he will think the page has been tagged because my bot isn't "clever" enough to tell the difference :) (It's not a parser, it uses regular expressions and mine don't currently take note of comment and nowiki tags). --kingboyk (talk) 16:58, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Hm. No - it's looking for "What links here" (or actually the "embeddedin" function of api.php), so a commented-out banner wouldn't fool it. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 17:16, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Ah righto. Surely it still checks the contents of the talk page once it gets there though? Or do you check embeddedin for every page? Hmm... I'll have to take a look at that. We've just migrated a load of AWB stuff over to the API but I'm not familiar with that function... I guess that's what you're doing.
[1] OK, so it's basically "what transcludes here". I'd have thought you'd still need to be checking the page when you got there then in case somebody had tagged it in the meantime. Doesn't matter though, it's not what I came here for and I don't know how your bot works :) --kingboyk (talk) 18:09, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
In AWB, I build my list from a category or whatever, and then if the list is large I filter it against categories created by the template or "what transcludes here". Pretty much the same as your bot imagine, except this is all rather cumbersome in AWB. However, the page will still get skipped when my bot gets there if it finds an existing template with the correct parameters, "live" or not. Otherwise if somebody added the template after I built my list but before I got there a double tagging will result.
Right, back to testing. I'm just about ready to put out version 2 of my plugin so I'm using it manually in case any bugs pop up. Think I've ironed them all out now... --kingboyk (talk) 17:41, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Heads up

Hi. A few points:

  • Adding a WikiProject tag to a talk page is not a minor edit
  • Please put new WP banners below {{talkheader}} (and the various other names that template has). I know that template stinks but if it's there it should be above WP banners. Ditto for {{skiptotoctalk}}.
  • You seem to be introducing unneccessary extra white space in some edits.

Examples: recent, old.

Thanks. --kingboyk (talk) 16:55, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Much as I hate the "skiptotalk" and "talkheader" banners, I'll fix the bot to put those up at the top.
  • I'm not sure I agree, though, about the "minor" edit. Is there a policy or guideline on that? My impression was that a) talk-page edits are fairly minor, and b) banners aren't content, which makes them minor as well. But I honestly don't know about that.
  • I'll take a look at the white-space situation. It's definitely better than it used to be :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 17:19, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Of course it's not minor. You have a bot flag (I hope!) so you won't appear in recent changes. Imho, you should consider whether your edit is minor or not for that namespace. You can't dismiss all talk space edits as minor. Adding a banner is a substantial change to a talk page or; changing a parameter value such that the talk page gets recategorised or the text displayed by the template changes significantly is major.
I only tag as minor when the edit shouldn't change what's displayed on the page or is a minor maintenance edit, e.g. renaming {{bio}} to {{WPBiography}} or importance= to priority=. Everything else is major. I'm not saying I'm right (well actually I am saying that! ;)) but I've done something like 500,000 edits now and I get very very few complaints.
Thanks for the reply, happy tagging! :) --kingboyk (talk) 17:32, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Small note

Your bot kind of messed up an existing template. Thought you should know. Grandmasterka 08:00, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Ah hah! Thank you for pointing that out! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 15:49, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Error in edit summaries

Imagine my surprise I just checked my watchlist and dozens of articles having to do with Western Sahara have had their talk pages edited with the summary "m (SatyrBot adding WP:VIETNAM banner)" which is a little disconcerting, as you might imagine. It looks like all those banners were in reality additions of the {{Africaproject}} template, but I don't know just yet. Also - and you have no control over this - it looks like this bot is deleting some of the talk pages' comments. I have no idea why. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 19:58, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Ouch and double ouch!
Terribly sorry about that! I didn't change the edit summary... Forgive me on that - I should have checked.
FWIW, the comment deletion only happened when there were comments *above* the first heading. I'll get on fixing that error right now. I'll probably run a check of the bot's last project to make sure that didn't happen to too many articles, and to fix them. Sorry about that!!! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 20:23, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks I have no idea why I even put that part I just struck out of my original comment. Anyway. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 21:15, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Turns out the problem was the sections of the page that started with "===>". The bot thought those were section headings. Sigh. I've made the fix, but I seriously doubt there were any other exceptions like that one :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 16:09, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

WPBS

Hey dude, what ever happened with the SatyrBot list for talk pages needing WPBS? Not that I have a lot of free time, but sometimes I'm looking for mindless tasks to keep me occupied ... ;) — TAnthonyTalk 04:24, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Madmanbot was doing it automatically. I don't know if he/it still is, but there was no need to run any reports since that bot was already nesting the banners. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 06:43, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Alabama

Hey, the bot normally runs wonderfully, but I was doing some assessments today and noticed that it was somehow duplicating the other banners underneath the {{WikiProject Alabama}} template on the talk pages that it was adding our banner to. Could it be related to the new nested=yes parameter that has been added? ~Some examples: Talk:USS Shelby (APA-105), Talk:Solon Toothaker Kimball, and Talk:Owsley (musician) are the last few that I found. Just wanted to let you know. Cheers. Altairisfartalk 22:27, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Altairisfar! Thanks for pointing this out. I doubt it's the nested tag, but I'm kinda surprised that it hasn't popped up before. It looks like it was a grep mistake on my part. I'll watch it on its next run and make sure it doesn't happen again. Thanks, -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 01:32, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
It's simple enough to fix manually if it takes time to get to the bottom of it. I know that I appreciate having it work for us. I only brought up the tag because it was new, I have a hard enough time understanding simple coding! Thanks. ;) Altairisfartalk 01:24, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Opera/To-do list

I am wondering if we can give this a run? I don't think it's been in operation since September. Best. -- Kleinzach (talk) 00:03, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
