Request for edit summary

edit

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 36% for major edits and 6% for minor edits. (Based on the last 148 major and 150 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 22:59, 25 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Baon-n-jour! Nice work on the Occupation article. I've uploaded some more Occupation and Liberation images (from Jersey) to Commons - if you want to use any, they're in Category:Jersey. Mercie bian! Man vyi 14:11, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Helpme

edit

I am preparing a page for the Parisian park - Parc Monceau (which is referenced by a few places but is a red link) - I see that the French page fr:Parc Monceau has a photo of the park. My question is, how do I include the French photo in my English page. I have tried a few variations of the following without success, fr:Image:Roseraie parc monceau.jpg and have searched Help for clues too.

Hi! The image is uploaded to the French Wikipedia so there is no way to use it in the English Wikipedia. What you need to do is upload the image to the Commons (where all Wikipedias will be able to use it) or the English Wikipedia. To upload it you would first have to save the picture to your computer. When you upload it, it is very important to include all the original details provided.--Commander Keane 00:30, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Channel Islands/Isle of Man geography stubs

edit

Hi Sgfoote - just a quick note to you and the other editors I know of in either IoM or the CIs that the old {{UK-crown-geo-stub}} and Category:Crown Dependency geography stubs has been split into separate stubs for the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Not sure if you ever used the old template and category, but if you did, the stubs are now marked with {{ChannelIslands-geo-stub}} or {{IsleofMan-geo-stub}} and categorised in Category:Channel Islands geography stubs and Category:Isle of Man geography stubs. The Three Little Words

edit

Hi. I saw your vote on the Guernsiais move. Tell me -- do you speak/write in Guernsiais, or know of anyone who does? Reason I am asking is a little side project: How does one write "I love you" in Guernsiais? I know there are numerous "ILY" sites on the internet, but many seem to be carbon copies of each other, and according to some multilingual friends of mine, they are not always accurate. So if you could help me out, I would be grateful. If not, no matter -- but thanks for your consideration. Cheers. --SigPig |SEND - OVER 05:41, 16 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: William Le Lacheur

edit

Hi, and thanks for our note about William Le Lacheur. First off, I'd like to point out that I don't give out "B's" by the bucket, so please take it in the spirit it was given. That said, there are some straightforward things you can do to get the article to the "high-b/good article" area.

First, take a look at this article: Domenico Selvo. The first thing you notice is that it has a nice meaty lead, following WP:LEAD.

That article has 5 or 6 pictures. It seems like there must be pictures around of stuff pertinent to Le Lacheur's life: the church he was married in, one of his ships, or a picture of a ship like he ran, the town he grew up in, a train line he built in Costa Rica, something like that. One caveat: don't use a picture of a stamp -- that will cause problems. But, if you can find pictures of the stamps, you can link to them in "External Links"

Notice the inline citations, following WP:CITE, and how they're split off from the references. It's up to you, but I've been using {{Cite book}} for my reference sections, and being sure to include the ISBN's.

Now, take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Biography#WikiProject_Biography_11_easy_steps_to_producing_at_least_a_B_article. You should do #4: add the Persondata template. He should probably go into more categories (#6). There are only about 10 links into the article, that should probably be higher.

Some quick opinions:

  • Merge "early life" with "family and children."
  • Turn "family and children" into prose. If the children's spouses aren't notable, consider omitting them.
  • It seems like "Contribution to Costa Rica" should have an opening paragraph: "Le Lacheur had a significant impact on the development of Costa Rica..."
  • I'd remove "Contribution to" from the three sub-heads.
  • It seems like there should be more "See also" and "External links."
  • The memorials section should probably be turned into prose.

I also suspect there's more to tell about him. But I don't know anything more than I've read here. Just off the top of my head, I'd think about adding 5 or 10 more paragraphs in the biography section.

I think at this point, you'd be close to a GA, and should start judging it against the good article criteria, and perhaps getting a peer review. I'm working on an article at a similar level, Andrew Furuseth, that might be easier to compare to than Domenico Selvo. If you have any questions, comments, or anything please feel free to ping me on my talk page, or on Talk:William_Le_Lacheur. Best of luck and cheers. HausTalk 00:46, 7 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would agree with the suggestions Haus gives above. I also got that feeling that "there's more to tell about him", but I don't know anymore then I just read. Other things that might help are: inline citations (and more references), also some of the prose is a bit "clunky", which causes some important points to be lost. If you don't mind I would like to have a go at some basic prose issues. (I don't want to step on your toes though, so I will wait for the go ahead from you.)--DO11.10 22:49, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Crown dependancy place infobox

edit

Hello, I've noticed you're a Wikipedian in or from the Channel Islands. There is a discussion found here regarding the possible use of the Template:Infobox UK place on settlement articles relating to the three Crown dependancies of the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.

It's a very strong infobox with alot of automation, flexibility and localised mapping, (examples are found at Kirkwall or Chew Valley) and though is entitled with "UK", wouldn't formally display the United Kingdom in any article. I'd welcome you to discuss if this is a good idea for these island's towns and villages. Hope to hear from you, Jza84 23:46, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for File:Islander flyer.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Islander flyer.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.
