FGM

edit

I saw your comment at Talk:Female genital mutilation#Contribution to FGM. As you may not be very experienced in matters relating to Wikipedia I wanted to point out the obvious that you have picked a rather contentious topic! In case you are haven't noticed, Wikipedia has a steady stream of advocates who like to use the encyclopedia's high Google rank to promote their favorite POV (point of view). Some of them want to equate circumcision with FGM, and when active they can cause a lot of noise. In addition, it is difficult to write text that is compatible with the encyclopedic style used here—in particular it is important to avoid anything that looks like it is going too far towards declaring FGM as "bad" (it obviously is bad, but articles have to use the words of independent authorities such as the WHO without any discernible editorial line). Be prepared to have your edits reverted, rewritten, or even attacked. I am painting the worst possible picture because it is useful to be prepared—recognize that anyone on the Internet can edit the article or post messages, so not all responses will be rational. An editor needs to remain calm and let others deal with disruption. If a dispute does arise, it needs to be discussed on the article talk page. I will be watching from time to time, but I'm busy elsewhere and won't do anything useful. However, if you would like some advice I could at least point you in the right direction. Sorry to be a bit gloomy, but it is better to be warned and be pleasantly surprised when things work out well. It would be great to get some more worldwide info in the article, so happy editing!   Hello, I'm Ducknish. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Malaysia, but you didn't provide a source. I’ve removed it for now, but if you’d like to include a citation to a reliable source and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks, Ducknish (talk) 21:41, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button (  or  ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 21:01, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Shannon, just a note to say that I appreciated your apology today, and also to say that if you need advice about how to summarize and paraphrase, and when it's appropriate to quote and use in-text attribution, I'd be very willing to help out. Feel free to drop me a note on my talk page or send me an email if you think I could help. Best wishes, SlimVirgin (talk) 22:07, 8 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Shannon7mcnamara! As a student editor on Wikipedia, you have a lot of valuable experience about what it's like to edit as a part of a classroom assignment. In order to help other students like you enjoy editing while contributing positively to Wikipedia, it's extremely helpful to hear from real student editors about their challenges, successes, and support needs. Please take a few minutes to answer these questions by clicking below. (Note that the responses are posted to a public wiki page.) Thanks!
