editHello Shaukatalisimula. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, such as the edit you made to Lionel Briand, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially egregious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat SEO.
Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists, and if it does not, from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Shaukatalisimula. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Shaukatalisimula|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. — Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 09:29, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi,
I don't have any financial stake in promoting the page of Prof. Lionel Briand. He was my Ph.D. advisor from 2008-2012. Since he has done great scientific achievements in his career, I decided to update his Wikipedia page with more information and links to his works. This is the reason that I added many details on his Wikipedia page. He is a Professor in Canada/Luxembourg, whereas I am a Scientist in Norway working in a research institute funded by public funding. I am not being paid in any way for doing these edits. You can find more information about myself on my webpage on my research institute's website: https://www.simula.no/people/shaukat
I also just noticed this message in the history "Reverting promotional type edits that made this appear like a resume instead of an article on an encyclopedia". If this is the issue, I can try to write the page in a different way that it shouldn't look like a resume.

Managing a conflict of interest
editHello, Shaukatalisimula. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Lionel Briand, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. — Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 21:53, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
Hello Coffee,
Duly noted! I will make a careful revision on the page. If I find any information that qualifies for conflict of interest. I will disclose it. I will now revert back and will continue editing. BTW, it would be helpful if you could point to the statements that you might find of promotional nature. I will then rework on them.

- You need to propose changes at the talk page, and follow the instructions at WP:COIDISCLOSE. After you do that I may be willing to allot you some time out of my day to point out how your edits are not neutrally worded. You may also want to look over WP:RS, WP:BLP, WP:MOS, WP:NOT, WP:BRD, WP:CON, WP:V and WP:5P before continuing to edit, as knowing and adhering to those policies will save you a lot of headache on our site. I thank you for your cooperative tone, and understanding. — Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 22:18, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
Sounds wonderful! Thanks a lot. I will familiarize myself with these policies and then propose changes on the talk page. Shaukatalisimula (talk) 07:52, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi Coffee,
I just proposed changes to the talk page.
