Hello, Shawn B, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Adam and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

FINAL REFLECTIONS ON WIKIEDU: AFPRL290.26

• What did you learn about hip-hop from the assignments and study of this course? I learned that Hip-Hop was multi-functional. There was more than just music and dance, but it was movement and a way of expression from its early day.

• What did you learn about deliberate practice of paraphrasing existing work or They Say /I Say templates and study?

From deliberate practice I learned a lesson that was already engrained in me, but isn’t or wasn’t practiced as much as it should have been. I learned using the They Say/I Say way of writing is easier in a sense of call and response on work.

• From the reading of your chosen book, what did you learn that more of your peers or your parents should know about hip-hop history and culture?

What I learned from “Raising Kanye” was nothing is as it seems on the surface. Kanye in the book is painted as a complex character, and regardless of what is portrayed in the media everyone has a story, and his is just as worth the read. The book enforces a strong foundation in Hip-Hop and the lyric “Know ya self, know ya worth” (Drake) couldn’t be more apparent in the genre regarding Kanye.

• Why should students edit Wikipedia? Why edit hip-hop articles on Wikipedia?

We should edit Wiki because it our source. If we want Wiki to reflect things we need from it than adding to the collective could only help in the long run. And in regards to Hip-Hop we should edit it because the narrative is being portrayed by these so called “gate Keepers” and why not challenge their very one sided way of producing a genre they may not be engulfed in.

• What could Wikipedia editors learn from hip-hop history, culture, and aesthetics?

They Wiki editors could learn that it was a collaborative effort. Hip-Hop in its beginnings was influenced by many and used and honed by that same collective so the “gate-keepers” could take a lesson in that.

• Why study the field of hip-hop history and culture today or now? What aspects of the culture would assist our society or our education? Because of where it came from and where it’s going. Hip-Hop has parlayed from to DJ’s and breakdancing, we are not just that anymore. Hip-Hop is pop culture, fashion, and music these days, so to study you would have to engulf yourself. These reasons make it all the better to study now as appose to the previous.

• What would you suggest adding to the course? What should the professor start doing, stop doing, and/or continue doing? What should students start doing, stop doing, continue doing in this course? I think the way this course is run was on par. I think as a student we tend to get overwhelmed when we see something as huge as Wikipedia and we’re told we have to grow and change it, but that was part of the learning of the history that aided in this course.

• What did you learn from the cyphers and the Foucault remix assignment? I learned about the functionality of Hip-Hop. I think the many groupings and interpretations of Hip-Hop through eyes of many was great. Some were jaded by their own beliefs even after being apart of such a collective, and others joined the wave and learned, but that’s the fun of this class.

• How did race and/or gender factor into what you learned? What did you learn about systemic bias, if anything? Race played a part because when I first took part in this class I knew my “Blackness” would asst me in ways it wouldn’t others. I knew certain things that were already common knowledge in my household because of my Race. Also the way this class is set-up. In order to take it, you have to search in the Afro studies department. They set it up to be a “Race” class, when after study you find that Hip-Hop was collaborative from many parts, and many people.

Final Reflection Essay Black Popular Culture 390.27

What did you learn from your study in this course (e.g., readings, discussion, visual media, etc.)? That Black popular Culture is more than music and black Twitter. Black Popular Culture is the bread and butter of what make Black people and the black body valuable to society.

What did you learn from your deliberate practice and from the practice of paraphrasing research literature (e.g., 3-2-1 responses and/or They Say /I Say templates)? That deliberate practice is something I need to practice more.

What did you learn from the assigned text or texts and asking your own questions in 3-2-1 response? What would you pass along to future students and why? I would pass the knowlede that the book offers. Asking questions in regards to what is happening in that book is valuable to the process.

What did you discover from being a Wikipedian? And should contributing to the site be the norm for students in our department? If so, why? I learned what I learned last semester, which was Wikipedia is a credible place for scholarly work, if you are willing to put in the work. I think editing should be apart of the process for classes because the take away is beneficial to get out of the mindset that is instilled in students, that Wiki is not useful.

Did you observe/witness/experience any systemic bias while editing or from being reverted? If so, what evidence do you have for the bias? I did not think it was bias that got me reverted, I think it was crazy people with animals and lots of time on their hands.

How has your understanding of blackness and popular culture evolved/improved? My understanding has improved beyond barriers. I moved past my family and moved to the struggle my grandparents fought for in the South. I moved past my social media understanding to an understanding that resonates in history.

What habits and competencies have you acquired? What one habit or practice will you continue? Done is better than perfect. I struggle with that in most aspects in life and walking away with that one line will help me in the future.

BOTTOMLINE: What was your most compelling takeaway from this course? What did you learn about yourself, if anything? That learning about my own culture in a new light is helpful in the long run for growth.

Writing for Encyclopedia

During the semester, I focused my changes on working on “Cultural Appropriation.” The article itself can be reflected to the readings on “Gender, Sexuality, and Black Image in Popular Black Culture.” Specifically, to the point in the reading where it says, “School of craniometry defined the standard of what beauty was/is” nullifying any recognition of black beauty being a thing. The standard was the structure of a white European woman which narrows out any person of color. Bridging this back to Cultural Appropriation white men and women have the standard of beauty down… So what else is there? They steal the culture. I added Miley Cyrus to the conversation because she is your stereotypical white girl who soaked up the culture like a sponge and then rung it out in the sink when she was ready for her “re-branding.” It’s a pattern that singer Katy Perry has now adopted in her act.

Greg Tate answers this question in his book "Everything but the Burden" where he discusses how we are the fetish to many white folk and how are culture and soul are for sale for white people.

Will Miley Cyrus ever come clean about her Culture Vulturing?

Takeaway Cultural appropriation is a fad that started with bias and fear from white people and even with everything at their fingertips having what we have maybe just enough…
