    edit

The 'Douglas DC-8 jetliner'was commissioned by NASA (US space agency) in 1985. With a range of 5,400 nautical miles, it can fly at altitudes from 1,000 to 42,000 feet for up to 12 hours. Most science missions average six to 10 hours. DC-8 can carry 30,000 pounds of scientific instruments and equipment and can seat up to 45 experimenters and flight crew. DC-8 flies on three primary missions, namely, sensor development, satellite sensor verification, and basic research studies of the Earth's surface and atmosphere.

What it can do The aircraft is used to collect data for experiments to support projects serving the world's scientific community. Data gathered by the aircraft's remote sensing ability has been used for studies in archaeology, ecology, geography, hydrology, meteorology, oceanography, volcanology, atmospheric chemistry, cryospheric science, soil science and biology.

Low cost experiments The plane flies in the Earth's atmosphere which allows NASA to carry out tests at low costs.

A laboratory The plan incorporates a suite of data systems that can be tailored for specific missions. These include weather radar; global positioning and inertial navigational systems; a radar altimeter; sensors for recording total air temperature, ambient pressure, and relative humidity.
