Zidane head-butt
editThe Zidane head-butt concerns an altercation between French football player Zinedine Zidane and Italian defender Marco Materazzi in the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final.
A former midfielder, Zidane was one of the his generation's foremost players and commanded the highest ever transfer fee for a player (€77%nbsp;million in 2001). He won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000 with France and intended to retire from football after the 2006 World Cup, concluding one of the sport's more illustrious careers. Having captained France to the final of the competition, Zidane scored the first goal of the match but Materazzi scored the equaliser shortly afterwards. Without any further goals the game entered extra-time and in an off-ball incident Materazzi pulled Zidane's shirt. This led to an exchange of heated words between the players which culminated in Zidane head-butting the Italian player and subsequently being sent off for the attack. Italy won the match on penalties, with Materazzi scoring the second goal of the shoot-out.
This was the final moment of Zidane's career and the offence made him only the fourth player to be sent off in World Cup Final history. A FIFA disciplinary investigation into the incident resulted in a fine and match ban for both players. As he had already retired, Zidane voluntarily served three days of community service instead. The high-profile incident was the subject of much discussion by the media and public and opinions were as diverse as full support and out-right condemnation.
