And I can also confirm that brand new users will have the ability to create articles, though they will not be able to move pages (including moving pages out of the sandbox into article space), edit semi-protected pages, or upload files or upload a new version of an existing file. Those restrictions go away once they have been signed up for 4 days and have made 10 or more edits, so we may want to encourage volunteers for the edit-a-thon to have at least created an account and done a little editing several days in advance. If, however, those become a problem then I, or some one who has been around to that extent, can almost certainly do those things for them. It might also be possible to get a waiver through an administrator, but it's probably easier just for one of us to do it for them.
