Explanations for the "Why no AI" questions
editHello! I saw your edits to your userpage (I am a Recent Changes patroller), and would like to offer a quick explanation:
AI is not a magic bullet. As much as we'd like it to be, AI is not capable of shooting complex, nuanced problems like translation out of the park. If you need a simple translator, use Google Translate, but even Google Translate is highly imperfect. Alongside that, the amount of computing resources needed for current AI systems is, well, outside the grasp of a site that needs to serve billions of views per day that isn't Google. Take the GPT-2 AI model from OpenAI (Yknow, the one that can generate full, partially coherent stories). It takes a datacenter grade GPU (Which would usually cost $10k or more per unit) to run the model at a decent speed, and even then it takes half a second or so to generate a response. The monetary and performance hit of running a model of similar computational complexity would be unacceptable even for google.
Now, for your other suggestions.. Yea we need those. It'd be better if talkpages were redesigned entirely (WMF is working on this, and other wikis actually are using the new redesign, but enwiki consensus decided it's not ready to use yet on here)

- SimulatedZero, Mediawiki already supports multiple interfaces. The default is Vector, but it's possible to make new ones. Thing is no-one's made any new ones. moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 21:09, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Moonythedwarf: thanks for letting me know, no-one's made any new ones reflects lack of founding. SimulatedZero (talk) 21:16, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- SimulatedZero, Go into "Appearance" in your preferences to look at the other skins. moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 21:20, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Talk:Fermi paradox
editStating that you "know" why someone has an opinion, when that stated reason is different than what they have said is the reason, seems pretty presumptuous and uncivil. You should avoid this. VQuakr (talk) 22:50, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
- @VQuakr:Are you telling me that i should assume that everybody always tells the truth? Are you telling me that nobody ever hides their real reason and i should ignore it if they do? I came to that conclusion after talking with him extensively, the viewpoint doesn't make sense to him personally the same way “heavier-than-air flying machines is possible” didn't make sense to Kelvin; he can't accept "advancement in technology" as an argument, history showed us that people with that approach couldn't predict 8 years into the future.
- Anyway this conversation belongs to the talk page at Fermi paradox, and I hope you and I continue it there.
- I looked at your user page and saw that you already made a big contribution to Wikipedia. I want to take this opportunity and personally thank you for your contributions to humanities biggest effort to compile human knowledge. During the brief conversation that we had so far you made an impression of a smart and respectful person. do you have a military background? SimulatedZero (talk) 04:54, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- Assuming good faith is a requirement for editing here. No, behavioral stuff does like this definitely does not belong on the article talk page. Thank you for your thanks! I have family members in/formerly in the military; I am a civilian. VQuakr (talk) 06:29, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Essays
editRegarding this thought: WP space essays that conflict with policy and guidelines can be deleted, modified, or moved to user space. When someone cites an essay, you can think of it as them tersely saying "for the reasons outlined here". VQuakr (talk) 03:17, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

- If you didn't know, we also have a village pump intended for developing and discussing ideas. One subgroup is the idea lab. VQuakr (talk) 06:43, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
- @VQuakr: thanks for letting me know, honestly i kinda guessed we should have something like that, considering that we still have the problems that i listed on my page after all these years might be indication that official Wikipedia way to developing and discussing ideas was not effective enough. i will look into going through official channels as soon as I feel the idea is ready, so far i am focused on developing the improvement ideas themselves. I will appreciate it if you tell me, when you feel an idea in my page is ready for presentation. SimulatedZero (talk) 07:15, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
