Re: About deletion, where should we draw the line?

edit

Hej Sjakkalle,
Good question, actually - there's constant debate on various talk and policy pages about where exactly to draw a line for inclusion/deletion. I tend to agree that the Wing Commander articles have grown to be quite good an informative (even though it's a topic that doesn't interest me all that much), and in hindsight, my tagging your first article for deletion was probably a bit premature - sorry for that, and good to see you decided to stick around nonetheless :) For the record, I view myself as neither a deletionist nor an inclusionist but try to judge each article on its own merit - I don't think Wikipedia should be filled up indiscriminately with articles on anything and everything, but I agree that we can have a lot more leeway that traditional paper encyclopedias. -- Ferkelparade π 15:05, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Re: user name

edit

Hi, thanks for getting a user name. They are definitely useful around VfD, to quote the top of the page: "Your opinion will be given the most weight if you are logged in with an account that already existed when the nomination was made...". Also other voters often take less notice of anonymous-looking comments. Kappa 13:59, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

RE Lee Deville vfd

edit

Thanks for taking the time to let me know that you relisted the Deville article on VfD. I'm keeping out of it, because I feel like I've done my duty--I rescued it, put in a stub, then rescued that stub, and I'm still not sure myself whether the guy is really notable. I have real problems with the "average professor test" and the fact that minor characters in video games seem to be allowed but professors aren't, but I don't think Deville is the guy to fight it on. Also, as I wrote in my comment in the original VfD, I don't know anything about academic mathematics and I have no idea whatsoever whether this guy is notable. (Although, to be frank, I doubt that the other people voting on VfD know that much ore about math than I do.) Anyway, thanks for letting me know. Remes 19:08, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Chess

edit

Hi there! Following your VfD nominations on chess, I spent some time browsing chess pages. My chess is a bit rusty (I'm more into other games) but I like its presence here as a field of knowledge not commonly found so broadly in 'pedias.

Anyway. I ran into Fool's mate and noticed something that seemed to be missing, and I thought maybe you could tell me if I simply didn't find it, or my naming is wrong, or something. Fool's mate is known in Dutch as 'gekkenmat' (crazy mate) because it basically only works if your opponent cooperates. However, equally well-known here is 'herdersmat' (shepherd's mate) which is a four-move mate which only requires that your opponent isn't paying attention; I've seen it happen several times in school chess tourneys.

White moves E2-E4, F1-C4, D1-H5 then mates with C4-E7 or H5-E7. What black does isn't really relevant as long as it doesn't interfere with the pattern. Radiant_* 11:27, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)

  • Oh btw while we're on the subject, pure mate uses a nonstandard board template. FYI. Radiant_* 11:29, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)
    • Thanks for your answer. I've added a redirect from Shepherd's mate as it seems to be used in some other European countries as well. Radiant_* 11:53, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your great work on chess related articles. It's all great, and I especially like your work on Larsen's Opening. We could probably include the game score to Spassky's (in)famous demolition of Larsen in the 1970 USSR vs World game in the article. (I enjoy miniatures.) In general I think more chess articles could use complete game scores. Normally not for the openings, but most of the notable chess players should be given an example of their best play. I think the Anatoly Karpov article is a great example of a nicely chosen game. Quale 05:32, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Chess opening popularities

edit

I noticed you have added a line like " Of the twenty possible first moves from White, 1.b4 ranks ninth in popularity" to many chess openings. Good job and interesting data, but what's your source? --ZeroOne 14:57, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi again. :) I wonder if you know about the Wikipedia:WikiProject Chess. To quote the page: "This WikiProject aims primarily to present all the wikipedia articles about chess in a coherent fashion. This includes the coherence of the following aspects:

  • Chess diagrams
  • Annotation of chess games
  • Notation"

The project could use some fresh blood, I just joined it and besides me there are three rather inactive users signed. --ZeroOne 16:03, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Planned Towers

edit

I didn't group nominate the towers for two reasons. 1) I don't know how 2) Starblind told me it was bad form to do group nominations here. There are about 20 more planned towers at List of Masts. It was my plan to nominate them slowly in batches of 5. Dave the Red 17:23, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)

Cities without busses

edit

On Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Bronx Bus Routes I had made the comment "my city has bus routes too, as does every town and city; definitely not encyclopaedic" and you responded "Not every city has busses unfortunately..."

I appreciate your point but just out of curiosity I could not think of a city that did not have a bus system - did you have a city in mind? Regards --AYArktos 10:46, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

hmmm you nominated Bozeman, Montana. It in fact does have a bus system Bobcat Transit - "An ASMSU sponsored bus system available to anyone". And dial-a-bus I would still say is a bus system. I am not trying to be provocative but I think it would be a real challenge to think of a city entirely public transport deprived - sometimes the networks may be extremely limited but ... I am not sure this debate will get us anywhere though. I was just curious if there were any examples which would result in a paradigm shift for myself. I am not sure the example of Bozeman did - a small city where the only bus service is associated with the university still has a bus system if that service can be used by anyone. Regards --AYArktos 11:16, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Templates

edit

Thanks for the kind words. Just my personal opinion, but it doesn't seem like putting out a test4 if you're a non-admin would do much good. The best bet would probably be to either list them on Vandalism in progress or WP:AN/I or both. RickK 22:09, Apr 8, 2005 (UTC)

Vfd-Tags

edit

I understand the standard issue answers. What I'm not hearing is any acknowledgment that the process was originallly applied in contradiction to the rules. Misuse is not a valid use of VFD. -==SV 09:09, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

That's a fair reading of the situation, but is the "No potential for becoming encyclopedic" clause (which was not cited, rather POV was) overly-broad? How can that apply to an article which can be renamed and rewritten for NPOV? If the issue is scope, then I'll challenge you to justify how VFD is the appropriate place for discussion. • Thank you very much for your support in the attempted RfC, but please take it easy on Inshannee, he's trying to the right thing, although he hasn't followed recommend procedure very closely. Kappa 12:43, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • Oh I misunderstood. Well RickK is endorsing the general idea that "Kappa's voting is a problem" rather than the specific basis, that "Kappa doesn't respond to attempts on his talk page to deal with the problem". He knows Vfd well enough to be entitled to that opinion. Kappa 12:53, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I've completely rewritten the article, and I hope you might reconsider its nomination. Thank you! Samaritan 19:58, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I think that all of these accumulations of poll results are copyrighted, but let's fight one battle at a time. RickK 22:54, Apr 13, 2005 (UTC)

Feel free to speedy the thing. It's a text dump that lists the specific questions of one of the Mathematics Olympiade events in the Netherlands. They're not encyclopedic regardless of copyright issues. Mgm|(talk) 11:56, Apr 14, 2005 (UTC)

attempted discussion

edit

You told me discuss things on the discussion page instead of in the "Benedict" article. That was my intenttion. I for one think the "slave labour clause" is irrelevant to this article and removed it repeatedly, but others reverted that again and again. I added the *** just to draw their attention towards the discussion page. No offense Str1977

Thanks for the welcome & comment

edit

You recently fixed an editing mistake of mine. I very much appreciate that you took the time to send a note instead of just fixing my error. I would have never realized my mistake otherwise. Also, I think its great that you have created a number of articles for chess openings. There are surprisingly few resources online with discussions of openings and I think having them here is a useful tool. Gblaz 16:15, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Possible RFC on RickK relating to his deletion and undeletion actions

edit

I am considering filing an RFC on RickK relating to his abuse of deletion and undeletion policies. As you have tried and failed to resolve this dispute with him, I am requesting that you read my current draft (note that the current debate is still ongoing, and the situation there may change) and let me know whether you'd certify the basis for the dispute. Thanks. --SPUI (talk) 22:23, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • I posted a response on SPUI's talkpage informing him that I would not endorse or certify this RfC. Sjakkalle 06:37, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi Sjakkalle. Thanks very much for your vote for my RfA. I promise to be prudent, wise, sagacious and totally unilateral in all my admin affairs. Frogs and such

edit

"The Anura is the order of animals in the class Amphibia that includes frogs and toads. Although distinctions can be made between frogs and toads, those distinctions have no scientific status." from Anura 4.250.198.123 11:53, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC) (aka 4.250.xxx.xxx)

I understand your point, but people generally think of frogs and toads as different animals, and most encyclopedias treat them in separate articles. It is best to pose a question about it on the talkpages and see if you can get other editors to agree with you. Sjakkalle 11:57, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I moved your comment here. I choose not to get a name on wikipedia (yet?), and every time I log into my ISP I get 4.250.xxx.xxx with the xxx.xxx changing.

You have your opinion, I have mine. BE BOLD is wikipedia policy. I did what I thought and still think needs to be done. It might make you feel better to know I never get into revert wars. It's not good for my heart to get too excited. So If you want to always revert me on some article, you are guaranteed to win. I'm not here to win. Just trying to make wikipedia better. Cheers, and happy editing 4.250.198.123 12:30, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)
