Managing a conflict of interest
editHello, Sjaltman. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Steve Rothman, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:
- avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
- instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
- when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. Julietdeltalima (talk) 16:28, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Manual of Style issues
editPlease be aware that the additions you are making to Steve Rothman are wildly out of sync with Wikipedia's style guidelines. I deeply urge you to read a bunch of Wikipedia biography articles to see how they are actually formatted, and to spend some time looking at the Wikipedia Manual of Style regarding article structure. You will see, if you spend any time at all on the site, that we don't use numbered sections here, as one major example. I urge you to ask the editors at WP:TEAHOUSE any questions regarding style-manual-related issues. Best regards - Julietdeltalima (talk) 17:36, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Separate issue regarding potential multiple accounts
editI notice that an editor named JewellAltman started working on Steve Rothman earlier this week, and posted to the article talk page. Given the obvious similarities in your usernames, I am gently asking what the connection is between the two of you.
While it is generally preferred on Wikipedia for one person to have one account, there are many instances in which users have multiple accounts that are conspicuously disclosed on their userpages (for example, some editors maintain a separate account for use on public networks where hacking is a danger, but they clearly disclose the existence of those multiple accounts on their userpages). I am bringing this up in a helpful spirit with the concern that other editors are not so helpful, particularly in a situation in which paid editing is going on at the behest of an article subject, a phenomenon HIGHLY frowned upon at Wikipedia; please see WP:PAID and WP:COI for considerations that you will likely be called upon to address sooner rather than later.
Please know that I dislike bombarding a new user with a lot of stern messages, but this is a situation that I fear is going to lead to unpleasant interactions with other editors if you don't make disclosures regarding the relationship between these two similarly-named accounts and the conflict of interest posed by your and/or JewellAltman's paid editing. The WP:MOS issues I addressed above are going to lead to attention from other editors sooner rather than later; seriously, we don't use section numbers here, just for starters, and even I admit it's hard to be patient with a new editor who doesn't seem even to have looked at several comparable articles before getting started just to get the lay of the land. Wikipedia can be a very challenging outlet and I wish you the best. - Julietdeltalima (talk) 17:47, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
