Welcome!

Hello, Sleepvertical, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

@Shalor (Wiki Ed): Hi, I know it has been a long time since I worked with Wikipedia via the Virginia Commonwealth University/Beauty_and_the_Beast_-_Cupid_and_Psyche_(Fall_2018) but is there any possibility that Wikipedia is hiring? I have since received more professional editing experience through working on other sites. However, this Wikipedia project has always stuck with me and I was just curious to know if Wikipedia has any openings available? (I'm not sure if you remember but I was one of the only students who video called with you in this class as well...) Sleepvertical (talk) 16:53, 23 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Shalor (Wiki Ed): Actually perhaps this was a bad time to ask. I just read through the issues brought up on your talk page and the Wikipedia:Education noticeboard page. There seems to be a disconnect from Wikipedia and instructors in these programs. I see that only 67% of students completed the editing modules (Yikes!) and that there have been issues with students creating pages. I recall that in my class my instructor was more diligent and monitored students and made sure that they did their modules, which may be rare for other classes. Unfortunately, Wikipedia seems a bit understaffed to deal with so many classes and students. Is there anyway others could get involved to help? Possibly move the needle from "Hurts Wikipedia" to at least "Good"? I'm a job-seeking English graduate with editing experience on several sites looking for more experience. While I have time, is there any way I can help? Voluntarily? Sleepvertical (talk) 17:37, 23 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi! Wiki Education isn't hiring at the moment for anything other than an institutional funding position, but you can definitely still help out with new students if you like! Now I will say that the Wikimedia Foundation (which runs Wikipedia) is hiring - they're a completely separate entity. You can see their job listsings here. If you're familiar with engineering, software, or database construction, then those are always some of the most in demand jobs. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:07, 24 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Howl's moving castle selection

edit

Hi @Sleepvertical and welcome back! It's always great to see returning students to the Wiki Student program. I noticed that you selected to work on Howl's Moving Castle, which as you know has Good article status. I saw your sandbox and love to see the outline and thinking ahead for this project. I'm always of the thinking that since this is rated a good article, that your efforts could be of better use improving an article that needs it more, perhaps a start class or c-class article.

With that said, if you decide to move forward with Howl's moving castle, I recommend starting a conversation on the talk page, and pinging the editors that have worked on it the most, you can see that here. I suggest sharing what plans you have to improve the page, and see if there's consensus about it. Perhaps you have some reliable sources in mind that you can also share. Please let me know if you have any questions. Looping in @Gcampbel: Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:55, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @Brianda (Wiki Ed) and yes I understand. I actually didn't quite mean to assign it to myself. I saw the feature "assign yourself an article" on our class page and mistakenly tried it out - but I think Dr. Campbell is supposed approve our articles! So, that is my mistake. However, I think there is a better opportunity to work on the novel's article rather than the film. Which I don't see a rating for on the talk page? I have found some good sources that agree it falls into the ATU 425 myth archetype. It would also fit more snugly there anyway. I will similarly (when approved) write a message on the talk page. Thank you for the advice and help. Sleepvertical (talk) 20:33, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ohh I see. The novel is rated a C-class, if you take a look at the talk page, it's in the template box, where it reads "This article is of interest to the following WikiProjects." Click on "show" and it'll show all the wikiprojects it's a part of and its rating.
Thanks for sharing your plan for your contribution. Seems like you're on the right path so far! If you ever have any questions or come across something confusing, feel free to reach out. Just remember to make sure you ping me, so I get a notification. Best of luck with this project! Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:42, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Brianda (Wiki Ed) Oh thank you! I'm not sure why in my head I thought clicking 'show' would suck me to the WikiProject page and not be a drop down tab... C seems good (pending my approval). I will definitely be pinging you for more questions throughout the semester. Thank you! Sleepvertical (talk) 20:46, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
