Hi!
editWhoa, a herpetologist! I sure could use your help around here. But, if you only have the time to stop by every once in a while, that's okay. BTW, you have at least one colleague who does that: Dfcisneros. Cheers, --Jwinius (talk) 15:00, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Hello
editI've been contributing to reptile-related pages for a fair while, but of course there's always much more to be done. Stewart
- Hi Stewart, For the past two years, I've been working to organize the snake articles according to the taxonomy available through ITIS and using the taxonomic and geographic information from McDiarmid et al' (1999). I've worked really hard at this, so it's painful to see articles like Antaresia childreni get renamed. The biologists I've discussed this issue with all think Wikipedia's naming policy for zoological articles is nuts, but none of them seem have any answers. I'm thinking that it might be a better idea to ask a mathematician for advice. --Jwinius (talk) 11:01, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I don't understand WP's naming policy. My way of doing things would be to have the current scientific name used as the name of the main article, with common names and synonyms redirecting to the main article. Ultimately, as long as there are proper redirects in place it probably doesn't matter what 'main' name is used.
- Stewart
- Well, at first the folks at WP:BOTONY thought they could do it that way, but then they realized that a policy more in favor of common names was more trouble than it was worth. So, about two years ago, they switched to using scientific names for almost everything. I believe that many people, such as myself, attempting to organize hundreds of zoological articles realize this also: that the larger our collection of zoological articles grows, the more badly organized it will become. My fear is that before long, we'll be left with a huge, incoherent mess of articles with lots of duplication and inconsistencies that will be very difficult to fix -- exactly what those at WP:BOTONY were afraid of. Yes, it would help if all those common name articles had redirects for valid scientific names, but if the redirects don't get made, or they get changed later on, not many people notice. Not many tend to notice either if the taxonomy is contradictory: Elaphe for this, Pantherophis for that... who cares?! They're all rat snakes and it's really only the common-name titles that matters, right? Yes, this may only be Wikipedia, but I always hoped that it could do so much better in this area. --Jwinius (talk) 15:31, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Photos
editHello. Nice to see you've uploaded some photos. Can I request you upload them at the Commons in future? This is a much better place to do it. Also, if you add a photo to an article that had a photo request, please remove the request. Have a look at how I did this at Talk:Acrochordus arafurae for an example. Thanks. NowCommons: Image:Acrochordus arafurae ugmedia.jpg
editImage:Acrochordus arafurae ugmedia.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:Image:Arafura file snake (Acrochordus arafurae) in captivity.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[Image:Arafura file snake (Acrochordus arafurae) in captivity.jpg]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:46, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Iguana, Physignathus, Cyclura or something else?
editDear colleague, couldn't you help me with identification of this lizard: commons:file:Washington DC Zoo - Physignathus cocincinus 1.jpg? The filename says that it is Physignathus cocincinus, but I have seen some suspects that it is an unusually colored Iguana iguana. I tried to investigate this question and it seems that Iguana iguana should have a very big round scale at the lower base of the head (commons:category:Iguana iguana heads), but this specimen lacks it. And it somewhat resembles Cyclura lewisi. Is this specimen identifiable at all (at least to family)? Stas (talk) 22:21, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
