Melidoni

I moved to Crete two years ago and have started to explore its history & culture.

I wanted to write an article on Melidoni.

Melidoni is a small community close to Rethymno in central north Crete. Nearby in a UNESCO park are the Melidoni caves.

The caves are an example of a vast underground cavern which has had many uses over thousands of years, from habitation to worship and refuge.

During the 15th century a massacre of Cretan men, women and children was committed by Ottoman soldiers against a civilian population. Over a hundred people were suffocated or burnt to death when the Turkish troops blocked the entrance to the cave and three combustible material into the chasms below.
