HI, can I correct you with regard to the traffic flow on Savoy court? The reason for the right hand traffic flow is due to the proximity of the Savoy theatre to the main entrance of the Savoy hotel and nothing to do with cab drivers opening cab doors from the drivers seat, I'm sure the driver would not have been able to reach the door handle of the cab especially the hansom safety cab which was the dominant cab at the time with the driver up high at the rear of the cab. The theatre was built before the hotel and after the hotel was opened it was felt that with left hand working, queuing traffic (mainly cabs) dropping and picking up theatre goers would block the entrance to the hotel, with right hand working traffic the que would be back out towards Strand, this would also allow empty cabs to pick up hotel guests leaving the hotel. can I also add that the small roundabout in front of the savoy is not the reason for the 25 foot turning circle of a London cab, this is because at the time of writing the original conditions of fitness for London motor cabs most cab ranks were situated in the middle of the road and needed to be able to turn to the kerb if required by anyone hailing a cab to travel in the opposite direction.
